Review – Top Cow First Look

I’ll just cut to the chase when it comes to Top Cow First Look, this is a must buy. Six fantastic stories for $4.99. Less than $1 an issue, this is a no brainer. So, where do I begin with each tale, I guess it’s easiest to take them one at a time and just praise each of them in their own little way with a modified review.

Genius is written by Marc Bernardin and Adam Freeman with art by Troy Peteri. Someone’s united all of the gangs in Los Angeles. One cop believes this person exists and the LAPD is dealing with a very bright individual. But would anyone believe that leader is a woman? The story is original, the art is great and I wanted more and more. This kick ass story starts off this steal. Rating: 9

Sunset, takes on a man who has a mysterious past. Written by Christos Gage and the art by Jorge Lucas, this is a mix of Dirty Harry or Gran Torino. A revenge tale with a lot of ass kicking. The entire issue is a build, and ends just as it’s getting good. Great story, and great art. Rating: 9

Mysterious Ways is the weakest of the bunch, but still really good. Written by Jason Rubin with pencils by Tyler Kirkham and inks by Sal Regla is the story of a gruesome murder and some spiritual things behind it. My biggest issue with this story is it’s a bit choppy and part just don’t make sense. Still the art is tight, and it’s entertaining. Rating: 8

Black Vault is something I didn’t see coming. To say why it’s so good is to reveal the twist at the end. This story written by B. Clay Moore and art by Nelson Blake II takes place on the International Space Station and involves a very mysterious crew who arrive with a cargo that’s not quite what it seems. This has tons of potential and I want to see where it goes. Rating: 9.5

The final two entries are from Minotaur Press who are being picked up by Top Cow.

Echoes by the brilliant Joshua Hale Fialkov with art by Rashan Ekedal is so beyond twisted and so freaking good. This a psycological thriller along with the likes of Silence of the Lambs. You know where this is going, and the pacing and build up are perfect. I love the black and white art (it’s a perfect fit) and can’t imagine what comes next. This is so good I hope folks are seriously taking a look at it for the big or small screen. Rating: 10

The final story of the bunch is Last Mortal, written by John Mahoney and Filip Sablik with art by Thomas Nachlik. A very interesting tale that doesn’t reveal what’s going on until the very last panel. It’s one story that crosses over into something totally different. Again this is a black and white comic, which works for it. A very creative and engaging beginning that sucks you right in. Rating: 9

Written by Christos Gage (Avengers Academy) with by the art team of Jorge Lucas (The Darkness) and Felix Serrano, Sunset tells the tale of an old Vegas enforcer on a quest for revenge in his twilight years.

Writer Jason Rubin (The Iron Saint), penciler Tyler Kirkham (Green Lantern Corps), inker Sal Regla and colorist Arif Prianto of IFS, unveils the supernatural murder-mystery Mysterious Ways.

B. Clay Moore, Nelson Blake II and Dave McCaig take you deep into space horror with Black Vault.

Kicking off the newly relaunched Minotaur Press line, Joshua Hale Fialkov and Rahsan Ekedal bring you a haunting generational serial killer tale with Echoes.

Written by John Mahoney and Top Cow publisher Filip Sablik with art by Thomas Nachlik present you a supernatural noir adventure about a small time criminal who discovers he cannot die with Last Mortal.

Review – Magdalena #3

I’m a big fan of Magdalena written by Ron Marz with great art from Nelson Blake II. The issue picks up with Patience on the trail of the little boy she’s tasked with killing.

Descended from the bloodline of Christ, Patience is the latest incarnation of the Magdalena. Armed with the Spear of Destiny, she is tasked with destroying any and all evil… even if it takes the form of a little boy. Patience might be able to destroy the boy’s demonic protectors, but can she bring herself to murder a child who could ultimately prove to be innocent?

While the issue is a long fight it serves a pretty important purpose. We need to see Patience in a fight and what she and Kristoff can do in a brawl. The issue serves as that bridge and does it’s job well. Even without the normal out front and center character focus a lot of Top Cow comics have, the fight and interaction is entertaining. Instead any character development is subtle and pulled off well.

The series is a build up. We know Patience will confront the evil little boy in a future issue and she’ll face the task of having to kill him. Will she go that far and complete her mission? We get the build up and hints by watching her interaction here with others. We know she has it in her to do what needs to be done, but when push comes to shove, will she do it when she really has to?

Baltimore Comic Con 2010 – Top Cow Panel

I sat down at one of the Baltimore Comic Con panels to see what my friends at Top Cow had to say about what we can expect and hear them dish on a little insight into their comic making madness.

On the panel was über writer Ron Marz, artist Nelson Blake II and Top Cow publisher Filip Sablik. Here’s some of what they had to say.

Artifacts brings together the fantasy and science fiction aspects of the Top Cow universe together.
At the stories heart is Sara Pezzini and Jackie Estacado’s search for their daughter Hope and challenges them both to see how far they’ll go, what lines they’ll cross and what they’ll do to get their child back.
Marz described the event as a Michael Bay movie but with characters on top of the action.
Marz then went to talk about the overall writing philosophy of Top Cow and that you shouldn’t need a degree in continuity to enjoy a comic. It’s basic writing 101 in that a comic should be accessible for new and old readers alike. Artifacts is especially written to make sure that’s the case.
Artifacts #1 is going back for a third printing, the first Top Cow comic to do so.
The panel went on to talk about the Velocity mini-series and how the original project was scrapped due to creator disagreement. A pitch by Marz when he stepped in to write the series was to have it be a relay race where each issue is handed off to a new writer and artist.
Nelson Blake II described Magdalena as “a symptom of what’s going on in the Top Cow universe. It’s all part of the same vision.”
There was lots of discussion in how creating comics needs to be a collaborative project between the writers and the artists and Top Cow makes sure that’s the case. Other companies take an assembly line approach to production. The writer creates the script and artist draws what they write.
When it comes to the overall universe Filip stated that you should be able to buy just one comic book series if you like and enjoy it on it’s own, but if you purchase everything, you should be rewarded with a richer story.
They’ve launched some graphic novels for $5 to get you, the readers, to take a chance on the series (they’re worth it). They’ve even launched one that has six first issues for $5 understanding the economy is tough and it’s more difficult for individuals to try out and take a chance on a new series.
When it comes to a Witchblade movie, the funding is in place but they haven’t gotten a script they like and have gone through 3 or 4 scripts. They’d rather have no movie than put out crap.

This marks the third consecutive year the publisher has had a presence at the show.

Top Cow Publisher Filip Sablik and Direct Market Liaison Atom! Freeman will be bringing writer Ron Marz (Artifacts, Witchblade) and artist Nelson Blake II to the show. LOS ANGELES, Calif., July 12, 2010 – Top Cow Productions, Inc.’s race to Artifacts will include a stop at this year’s Comic-Con International in San Diego, California, the world’s biggest and most exciting popular convention, from July 22nd – 25th.

Top Cow will once again storm into the convention and set up shop at booth #2629. Fans should note that because of anticipated crowding issues; artists appearing at the Top Cow booth will only be able to do a limited amount of free sketches per sitting. Sketch tickets will be available at the beginning of each day of the show. Sketch tickets are limited one per fan per day. Fans must be present at the appointed signing time to redeem their sketch ticket. Not all artists appearing at the Top Cow booth will offer free sketches and fans should inquire at the booth on the morning they plan to get a sketch for availability.

Also at the Top Cow booth #2629, the publisher will offer several items exclusive to Comic-Con International including three convention variant cover comic exclusives, two limited edition hardcovers, and an unannounced bargain-priced anthology book.

Fans who stop by the booth will be among the first to grab a copy of the debut issue to mega-event series, Artifacts by Marz and Broussard. Artifacts promises to be Top Cow’s most ambitious series to date and will weave together story lines from a number of Top Cow titles, including Witchblade, The Darkness, Angelus and Broken Trinity: Pandora’s Box. It has been known for some time that thirteen mystical Artifacts guide the fate of the Top Cow Universe.
