All-New Lazarus Miniseries Launches this July

Eisner-winning series writer Greg Rucka is joined by series designer/writer Eric Trautmann, plus writers Aaron Duran and Neal Bailey, and six different artists for the six-issue miniseries Lazarus: X+66, which sets the stage for Lazarus’s sixth story arc, this July.

In Lazarus: X+66 #1, superstar artist Steve Lieber lends his talents to the trials and tribulations of Casey Solomon as she fights to survive Dagger training. Ever since she caught the eye of the Lazarus, Casey has learned that gaining the Family’s attention can be as much of a curse as a blessing. Will Dagger Selection destroy Casey, or will survival mean something worse?

Subsequent issues will feature art by Mack Chater, Justin Greenwood, Alitha Martinez, Bilquis Evely, and Tristan Jones. Each issue will boast a cover by series artist Michael Lark.

Lazarus: X+66 #1 (Diamond code: MAY170628) hits comic book stores Wednesday, July 19th. The final order cutoff deadline for comics retailers is Monday, June 26th.

Briggs Land Returns with Briggs Land: Lone Wolves

Welcome to Briggs Land: nearly a hundred square miles of rural wilderness, representing the largest anti-government secessionist movement in the United States. The battle continues in the second series: Briggs Land: Lone Wolves, featuring New York Times best-selling writer Brian Wood and interior artist Mack Chater, and colorist Lee Loughridge. Matthew Woodson and art legend Kim Jung Gi lend their respective artistic skills to the cover and variant cover.

The first issue Briggs Land: Lone Wolves finds Isaac Briggs seeking the solace of the hiking trails around Briggs Land as he comes to terms with his past military service in Afghanistan. When two random backpackers accidentally wander onto the Land, an innocent situation quickly turns dangerous and threatens to expose the Briggs family to the media.

Brian Wood is currently adapting Briggs Land for AMC TV, serving as writer and executive producer, with producing partners A24.

The first issue Briggs Land: Lone Wolves (of six) goes on sale June 14, 2017.

New Star Trek Anthology Series Will Launch In September

To celebrate 50 years of Star Trek, IDW Publishing, under license by CBS Consumer Products, will boldly launch a new series in September which honors the legacy of the various Starfleet crews which have inhabited the Star Trek universe over the past five decades.

From Captain Kirk to Archer, and everyone in between, each issue of Star Trek: Waypoint will feature brand-new stories starring fan-favorite characters written and drawn by some of today’s top talents. The debut issue will feature contributions by Donny Cates, Mack Chater, and Sandra Lanz with more exciting stories by all-star creators to be announced soon!

Cates and Chater will team on the lead story set during Star Trek: The Next Generation era which sees Geordi La Forge and Data put their scientific minds together to decipher a mysterious ship’s coded message. Their discovery may alter the course of scientific human history as we know it!

Review – Earp: Saints For Sinners #1

Earp Saints for Sinners #1Hmm, there’s tons I like in Earp: Saints For Sinners #1, but the familiar issue with today’s art cropped up, at times I couldn’t tell what the hell was going on.  Written by M. Zachary Sherman and Matt Cirulnick the story is a very cool update to the story of Wyatt Earp.

In a world where the American economy has all but collapsed to the levels of the Great Depression, infamous bandits roam the country and the law is as corrupt as the criminals its sworn to stop. Yet one lawman remains a steadfast moral compass for the people: WYATT EARP. Earp has collared more most-wanted men than anyone in history – but after a violent assignment claims the life of his brother, Wyatt sets out to forge a simple life in the only boomtown left: Las Vegas. With gorgeous women and free-flowing money on endless tap, Sin City attracts more people than a modern gold rush. Though Earp no longer wears a U.S. Marshall’s badge, his past is about to catch up to him.  With nearly everything to lose, Earp will have to beat the odds stacked against him in order to bring old-fashioned justice to Sin City.

The story isn’t what I have an issue with, it’s the art.  Many of the characters look too similar, and at times the coloring is so dark, I can’t tell what’s going on.  It seems to be a common issue with Radical comics, and I wonder if they’re just not made for digital reading (I read digital previews on an iPad).

The series has already been optioned for the big screen and it’ll absolutely rock in that medium, visually though, it just makes me cringe a bit.  Too dark seems to be a common issue today with digital comics and with that becoming a more common way to read, it’s hard not to worry what the future holds.

Overall though, the story is solid and entertaining.  The art though, is what makes me put on the breaks a bit from being overly enthusiastic.
