Lady Mechanika Splits From Aspen

I’ve been wondering where Lady Mechanika has been. It’s a fantastic series and one that has been missed, a lot (at least by me). Aspen has issued the following press release that they and Lady Mechanika creator Joe Benitez have parted ways.

ASPEN COMICS AND JOE BENITEZ SEPARATE

Press Release

01-01-13

Aspen and Joe Benitez announce they have amicably separated their publishing interests by mutual agreement. Peter Steigerwald, Aspen MLT, Inc. Co-Owner and frequent artistic collaborator with Joe Benitez, had this to say:

“We [Aspen] have greatly appreciated Joe’s time here with us and his involvement and promotion of Aspen Comics over the years. Joe and I have discussed his future plans and his desire to venture out on his own. As many know, ten years ago our Founder, Michael Turner, took a similar position and stepped away from his publisher, taking full publishing control of his own creations by founding Aspen Comics. We wish Joe well, and hope for a bright future for him and his creations, including Lady Mechanika. This has been a friendly separation and I plan on continuing to be there for him as colorist and collaborator as he wraps up his Lady Mechanika series. Aspen will be happy to provide any support he needs as he steps out on his own. I’ve been personal friends with Joe for nearly 20 years and I know this has long been a hope for him—to be able to found his own home for his creative visions.”

“Aspen has an ambitious schedule next year with our ’10 for 10’ initiative along with Fathom’s 15year anniversary, and we wanted both Aspen and Joe to start 2013 out on the right foot.”

The Lady Mechanika series will continue according to the plans of Joe Benitez.

Joe had this to say:

“I am both anxious and excited to be venturing out on my own with Lady Mechanika.  Aspen has been very supportive and I am and always will be grateful to them for giving Lady Mechanika her first home.  As I’ve stated in the past, working with Peter has been one of the highlights of my career.  He is an incredible talent whom I greatly admire and respect, and I hope to continue working with him on Lady Mechanika as well as other future projects.

I wish to extend a heartfelt thanks to all the fans and retailers for their patience and support. I hope you will continue to bear with me during this transitional period.  My plans for Lady Mechanika include finishing “The Mystery of the Mechanical Corpse” this upcoming year and also launching a monthly Lady Mechanika ongoing series.

May 2013 bring success and prosperity to both Lady Mechanika and Aspen.  Let’s go make some great comics!”

Aspen Comics Review – Fathom Vol. 4 #4, Lady Mechanika #3, The Scourge #6

Fathom Vol. 4 #4

Beautiful artwork, fun story, entertaining characters, that sums up this issue of Fathom which takes Aspen and her team to the Middle East.

A weary and frustrated Aspen arrives in Saudi Arabia at the request of scientists from an international conference of deep-sea researchers, but mostly, looking to avoid the scornful eye of the U.S. Government. However, Aspen soon realizes her refuge from the Americans’ concerns has now become a solution for a new groups’ crisis. At the request of the powers-that-be, she is hesitantly thrust back into the depths to moderate a search for oil reserves that soon turns into a discovery far greater—and potentially far more catastrophic—than what they ever could have anticipated.

The world presented here is pretty cool and unlike anything else I’ve seen.  The idea of oil reserves, fine enough, but the way the ocean is presented under the oil is really cool and amazing.  This is an untouched world that holds so much possibilities and wonders.  The art is amazing and story has me wanting to come back for more.  I’m slowly getting into Fathom and the way this issue ends I can’t wait to read the next issue and go back and see what I’ve been missing.

Lady Mechanika #3

I love, love, love Lady Mechanika.  The steampunk world it lays out, the visuals, characters, everything is amazing.  This third issue doesn’t disappoint in any way, even coming out with so much expectations from me.

From the imaginative mind of Joe Benitez with colors by the incomparable Peter Steigerwald, comes this all-new, critically acclaimed, supernatural action-adventure series! LADY MECHANIKA’s quest to retrieve the ‘Mechanical Girl’ along with her mysterious maker takes her to the strange and wondrous Cirque du Romani, where she encounters a bizarre—and also dangerous—troupe in search of answers. Along the way, even more shocking clues to the girl’s whereabouts are uncovered, and Mechanika is driven to attend the world famous Mechanicon!

At the heart of it all, the story is a murder mystery with Lady Mechanika attempting to track down another mechanical girl.  Instead she stumbles upon a corporate conspiracy in a world I’ve never seen before.  The story is cool, but visually the series is amazing.  This is unlike anything I’ve seen before and I want more, more, more.  It seems to be quite a bit between issues, and that’s the only downside, but when the quality is this good, getting anything makes me happy.  I still think steampunk is going to be the next big genre, and Lady Mechanika will be one of the crown jewels leading the way.

The Scourge #6

I’ve only read this issue and the issue before and this is a comic I want to see as a movie.  I also want to read the previous four issues I missed.  The comic is a father and son taking on demon like creatures.  It’s pretty straightforward, but it’s over the top action fun.

It’s SWAT officer John Griffin’s final stand! He’s New York City’s only hope in avoiding complete annihilation. All he has to do is get past countless bloodthirsty gargoyle-like creatures in an attempt to kill his best friend…and save his son in the process! Take a deep breathe, this is going to be one hell of a last ride!!

It’s really easy, if you like people kicking ass, shooting guns, crazy action like dangling from the Statue of Liberty, all with that infamous countdown until things go boom, this is for you. It’s unrealistic, but that’s what makes the comic so good.  This is a big screen action movie in comic form, and I have no idea if they could pull it off as an action movie.  It’s good, really good and looks like we’ll see more, which I can only hope.  If you haven’t read the previous issues, go grab those and this one, for those that have been reading, you’ll enjoy the ending.

Pick of the Week – Transformers: The Death of Optimus Prime

Let me say I read this and loved it.  IDW‘s Transformers has been one of my favorite series of the years mixing great action featuring the giant alien robots I love with adult plots of politics and intrigue.  Some of the best issues of the year (#22 and #23) are in a way reference in this issue as the idea of revolution is debated and once again the opposing philosophies and actions of the Decepticons and Autobots is talked about.  This isn’t your kids toys.  This is the issue that sets up two upcoming series that plot the further struggles of these alien beings as they rebuild post war.

In a simple issue, Transformers: The Death of Optimus Prime is an allegory about winning the peace and the last ten years of Iraqi occupation are summed up and laid out for all of us to understand.  It’s difficult for a solider to lay down their arms and rebuild, it’s not what they’re trained to do.  This issue is that first step to see if they can learn how.

  • Transformers: The Death of Optimus Prime – see above
  • Lady Mechanika #3 – I read it, it’s fantastic.
  • Uncanny X-Force #19 – Remender has been knocking it out of the park. It looks like this series will have something to do with the Age of Apocalypse, sign me up.
  • Memorial #1 – I’ll be reading this tomorrow morning, but Chris Roberson’s latest has me really psyched. Been looking forward to this one since it was announced.
  • Fantastic Four #601 – Issue 600 left me with my jaw dropped, I really want to see what happens next.

Comic Book Weekly Reviews – 7/20/11

Bookmark and Share

We’re a week late with these reviews due to San Diego Comic-Con, but never late than never!

Avengers #15 – I really like the story telling through interview style the last few issues have had and the tie-in to Fear Itself isn’t totally bad, but as a whole the series feels like it’s a bit on hold with a bigger story while it waits for Marvel’s summer event to end.  Thankfully it’s continuing it’s character development while it’s forced to participate in an otherwise underwhelming bigger story.

Story: 8.25 Art: 8 Overall: 8.25

Cinderella: Fables are Forever #6 – The six issue limited series has been fun with Cinderella taking on Dorothy Gale and while it expanded the Fables world and showed a little more of what’s out there, the series seems to be for naught if all that it opened up isn’t used further.  But, overall the six issues are fun and entertaining and worth the read.

Story: 8 Art: 8 Overall: 8

Daredevil #1 – And like that Daredevil is back.  The series has an old school vibe to it and that’s very welcome as Matt Murdock returns to New York City and attempts to put his life back together.

Story: 8 Art: 8 Overall: 8

DMZ #67 – This is it, the final story arc for Brian Wood’s brilliant series about war and what we do for the truth.  This series has been some of the best political commentary out there, and is an absolute must read.  When it’s over and done, you better believe I’ll be more than disappointed and will miss reading it every month.

Story: 8.5 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8.5

Fear Itself: Deadpool #2 – Wow is this limited series bad.  It adds nothing to the great Fear Itself storyline and comes off as a blatant cash grab to suck more money out of people during an event.  The story doesn’t even make much sense.  Just horrible.

Story: 6 Art: 7.75 Overall: 6.25

Fear Itself: Fearsome Four #2 – Nighthawk, Howard the Duck, Frankenstein and She-Hulk have to deal with Man-Thing in a Fear Itself tie-in that doesn’t do a whole lot to add to the story.  That seems to be par for a lot of the tie-ins being released.

Story: 6 Art: 7 Overall: 6

Fear Itself: FF – So, in all of the other Fear Itself tie-ins those affected by the hammers are depicted as mindless monsters who speak in a foreign tongue.  In this series the Thing is speaking coherently in full sentences.  Hmmmm.

Story: 6 Art: 7 Overall: 6

Fear Itself: The Home Front #4 – A mish-mash of stories that revolve around Fear Itself and one of them barely does.  While this series has been one of the better tie-ins, something is just off with this particular issue.  Dialogue and some of the plots just are off, with me laughing for all the wrong reasons.  Marvel has really missed the mark with this event.

Story: 6 Art: 7 Overall: 6

Flashpoint: Deadman and the Flying Graysons #2 – The Amazons have attacked the circus to retrieve and item and people are dying left and right.  It’s great when you know anything can happen in a series and anyone can die.  It keeps you on your toes.

Story: 8 Art: 8.25 Overall: 8

Flashpoint: Legion of Doom #2 – The perfect example of a comic where anything can happen.  There’s so many holy shit moments here and so much action that’s just brutal.

Story: 8.25 Art: 8.25 Overall: 8.25

Flashpoint: The Outsider #2 – While off to the side, the series adds to the distrust the world’s meta humans have towards each other and helps explain why they haven’t ended Atlantis’s and Amazon’s war.  The story is full of deception and twists and turns that’s pretty entertaining.

Story: 8.25 Art: 8.25 Overall: 8.25

Flashpoint: Wonder Woman and the Furies #2 – The build up to war is all chronicled here.  This is the back story that shows why the world is the way it is.

Story: 8.5 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8.5

Generation Hope #9 – I think the sub-title of this issue is “It Gets Better.”  The issue is clearly a moral story speaking to all those who get bullied for being different and letting them know it’s only a phase and there’s a better world out there.  Pretty interesting.

Story: 7 Art: 7 Overall: 7

Invincible Iron Man #506 – Tony calls out Odin and offers his help to build weapons to win the war.  Meanwhile his crew figured out what to do about the situation in France.  The story is ok, but what’s important it Tony breaking sobriety.

Story: 7.25 Art: 8.25 Overall: 7.5

Iron Man 2.0 #7 – Another Fear Itself tie-in that adds nothing to the bigger story and actually derails the momentum the main series had.  Such a waste.

Story: 6 Art: 7 Overall: 6.25

Lady Mechanika #2 – Such a long span between the first and second issue hasn’t helped.  The art is amazing but story suffers from such a long span.  I’d recommend going back and rereading the first two issues before diving into the second issue.

Story: 7 Art: 8.5 Overall: 7.5

Marvel Universe vs. Wolverine #2 – Wolverine is on a mission to find the cause of the outbreak and the Punisher is involved.  The series is fun and entertaining, just like the first volume.

Story: 7.5 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8

Mega Man #3 – There’s something so much fun about this series that captures the innocence of the animated series based on the hit video game.  Such a great comic for people of all ages.  My only issue is it’s very fast paced and we’re going through robots too quickly.

Story: 7.75 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8

Uncanny X-Men #541 – The team must deal with the Juggernaut who’s bearing down on San Francisco in a Fear Itself tie-in that’s ok.  Nothing bad, but nothing great either.

Story: 6.75 Art: 8.5 Overall: 7

The Walking Dead #87 – The aftermath is beginning as the town begins it’s post invasion preparation and Rick deals with his failure to protect everyone and what happened to Carl.  The series continues it’s amazing move forward and hasn’t lost steam in 87 issues.

Story: 8.75 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8.75

War of the Green Lanterns Aftermath #1 – It’s the aftermath and follow up to the War of the Green Lanterns.  Everyone is shaken and no one knows where the corps. goes from here.

Story: 7.75 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8
