Archie Reveals Dick Tracy’s Early Days Starting April 2018

Buckle up for a high-stakes crime adventure as co-writers Alex Segura and Michael Moreci along with artist Thomas Pitilli, colorist Dee Cunniffen and letterer Jack Morelli bring Dick Tracy back to comic books in April 2018! The first issue features variant covers by Francesco Francavilla, Kyle Baker, Cat Staggs, and Michael Walsh.

The earliest investigations of one of pop culture’s most iconic detectives will be explored in the new ongoing series that promises to blend the classic Dick Tracy style that readers know and love with a modern and dark noir feel.

The first arc goes back to square one and explores the early days of Dick Tracy’s time in The City, soon after the second World War.

Dick Tracy’s new adventures begin April 11, 2018 when the world famous detective investigates a deadly shooting that bears the fingerprints of a menacing killer known only as Flattop. Are you ready to join Dick Tracy on his newest case?

Review: DC House of Horror #1

An all-new, all-creepy one-shot set in the DC Universe-just in time for Halloween! Martha Kent fights for her life against a creature from a spacecraft that lands in front of her farmhouse. A young woman is possessed by the spirit of a murderous Amazon warrior. The last surviving member of the Justice League faces down a horror beyond imagining. All these and more are what happens when the most exciting new voices in contemporary horror fiction are paired with the talents of some of the greatest artists in the DC firmament!

Take classic DC characters and attempt to do an EC spin on it and you get this anthology comic timed for Halloween. While the stories themselves are written by various individuals, the plots of each story is credited to Keith Giffen.

As a whole, there’s only one or two stories that really stand out to me and generally while it’s an entertaining read, it’s hard to justify the $9.99 price point. The stories too are attempts at throwbacks including the focus on violence against women which six or seven decades ago might have been ok, but today, at times, feels cringe worthy. And that’s not in a good way. Instead the stories are a bit cookie cutter in that way and there’s just nothing really new that stands out and has me super excited about this special release. It’s all mediocre in execution and creativity.

There’s the fact that women seem to be the victims for far too many of the stories but they too seem to miss the classic twists at the end of the greats. What twists that do happen are predictable or lack a shock factor. It’s just stories without emotional reaction.

The art is numerous styles and that too is all over the place. You can see there’s an attempt to mimic classic horror tales but again it’s never quite nailed down. It never reaches the quality of the classics so its attempt to mimic that and go the homage route feels like a mistake. The art should be its own thing too.

The collection as a whole isn’t bad at all, it’s entertaining, but it’s not $9.99 entertaining. You can see what they were going for here, but it never quite reaches the point where it’s a good homage of classic horror comics and it also falls short of that quality. While striving for it, the package comes up short.

If you’re looking for some horror comics for the holiday season, there’s so much better that’s out there for the price point. If you’ve read all of those, then maybe this is worth it.

New York Comic Con 2017: Milestone’s Earth M Debuts Spring 2018

After lots of rumors and the feeling like it’d never happen, at New York Comic Con, DC Publisher Jim Lee, writer/producer/director Reginald Hudlin and Milestone co-founder and artist Denys Cowan announced the return of popular characters of the Dakota Universe in a new collaboration called Earth M in spring 2018. Cowan, Hudlin and Lee were joined by Milestone co-founder Derek Dingle and Earth M collaborators Alice Randall, Kyle Baker, Ken Lashley, and Greg Pak to share details of the re-emergence of classic Milestone characters, including Static Shock, Icon, and Rocket, as well as brand-new character creations from Hudlin and Cowan, which will debut in a series of different titles under the Earth M imprint.

Fans also received a surprise visit from The Walking Dead comic creator and writer Robert Kirkman, who stopped by to show a first look at his upcoming AMC documentary featuring the creation and history of Milestone Media. This episode is just one of six parts which comprise AMC Visionaries: Robert Kirkman’s Secret History of Comics—a new series focusing on different, significant chapters in American comic book history. The miniseries is set to premiere on Sunday, November 12, at 11p.m. ET/PT.

The launch book will be titled Milestone, and will create the foundation and over-arching storyline for future Earth M titles. The series, from writer Reginald Hudlin and artist Ken Lashley, will focus on Icon and Rocket and will feature other classic Dakota Universe characters from the ‘90s.

Panelists shared more details on other titles readers can expect:

Static Shock, an ongoing series from Hudlin and Kyle Baker, focusing on 14-year-old Virgil Hawkins, a kid with a love of comics and science who develops dazzling, electric superpowers.

Duo, a new Earth M miniseries written by Greg Pak, introducing the twisted story of a couple sharing one body for eternity.

Love Army, a miniseries with story by Hudlin, about a secret army of women with amazing abilities and super-strength, sworn to protect the planet.

Earth M, a new series from Hudlin and Alice Randall featuring a mysterious new vigilante character.

The Earth M Universe will share Milestone’s dedication to the creation of diverse characters. Moderator Dan Evans, DC Vice President of Creative Affairs, and the panelists also unveiled the new imprint logo and shared exclusive covers, artwork and concept designs from these upcoming series which you can catch below.

Papercutz Has an All-New Gumby Series and a Short Story by Kyle Baker

Papercutz has released a Gumby short story by Eisner and Harvey Award-winning cartoonist Kyle Baker, in advance of its new Gumby comic book series debuting on July 5, 2017. Baker’s story entitled “Model-Ty Crew” appears in Gumby #1, alongside a 10-page story by acclaimed writer Ray Fawkes and artist Jolyon Yates, a five page story by writer and editor Jeff Whitman and New York Times bestselling artist Jolyon Yates and a cover by Rick Geary. Upcoming issues will include contributions from a wide array of acclaimed children’s and young adult graphic novel creators, including Art Baltazar, Gregory Benton, Eric Esquivel, Veronica and Andy Fish, Sholly Fisch, Ryan Jampole, Jolyon Yates, Jeff Whitman and others. Each 32 page, $3.99 issue will feature a lead story and a five-page backup story, which will provide the opportunity for high profile creators to try their hand at the adventures of the “little green ball of clay.”

The all new Gumby comic books and upcoming graphic novels are the result of a recently announced partnership between Papercutz and Premavision Inc which allows the children’s graphic novel publisher to create new material based on the hit Gumby. Premavision also recently announced development of a new Gumby television series (in partnership with the Jim Henson Company) and plans for a feature film are also in the works.

Papercutz will collect the first three issues of the Gumby comic as a graphic novel, in both hardcover and trade paperback editions, on November 7, 2017.

The Fifth Beatle to be a TV Event Series

The Fifth BeatleAfter being developed for a feature film, The Fifth Beatle: The Story of Brian Epstein is heading to the small screen as a multi-part tv event series. Sonar Entertainment has optioned the rights to Vivek J. Tiwary‘s bestselling graphic novel. Tiwary created it with art from Andrew C. Robinson and Kyle Baker.

Brian Epstein was the manager of The Beatles and part of the driving force that brought the band the stardom. Epstein was also a gay man during a time and in a place where homosexual acts were a felony.

Tiwary had obtained the rights to the John Lennon-Paul McCartney song catalog and they’ll also have access to it for this project. This is the first Beatles-related biopic to secure such rights.

The graphic novel was published in 2013 by Dark Horse Comics.

Circuit-Breaker is an Electric Read

Syco Entertainment & IM Global Partner on The Fifth Beatle Film

Tiwary and Simon Cowell‘s Syco Entertainment have announced they will partner to co-produce the feature film version of The Fifth Beatle.  The screenplay, written by Tiwary, is an adaptation of  his acclaimed graphic novel based on the life of Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein.

The Fifth Beatle is a New York Times #1 best-selling graphic novel that recounts the true story of Brian Epstein, the brilliant visionary who discovered the Beatles in a cellar in Liverpool and guided them to unimaginable success.  But it’s also the story of how Epstein, of whom Paul McCartney said, “if anyone was the fifth Beatle, it was Brian,”  overcame seemingly insurmountable odds and personal demons  while bringing the Beatles to the world’s attention and kicking off a cultural revolution in the process.

Tiwary, Cowell and IM Global Founder and CEO Stuart Ford will serve as producers, and have already secured an unprecedented agreement with Sony/ATV Publishing for the use of Beatles music to be used in the film. IM Global President of Production Matt Jackson, President of IM Global Music David Schulhof, and Syco  Entertainment’s Head of Film Adam Milano will serve as executive producers. The producers also anticipate bringing a director onboard shortly.

Tiwary wrote the graphic novel, which was published by Dark Horse Comics, with art created by award-winning artists Andrew C. Robinson and Kyle Baker. The Fifth Beatle has  won many major literary awards, including the Will Eisner Comic Industry Award (the comics industry’s Academy Award) and two Harvey Awards (the comics industry’s Golden Globes), including Best Original Graphic Album. It was named a Lambda Literary Award Finalist for Best LGBT Graphic Novel, and has been added to The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Library and Archives Permanent Collection.

This is a bit if a restart for the film which was announced as having director Peyton Reed attached in 2013 and was to begin production in 2014. Casting was reportedly underway at one point.
