Review: Nat Turner #1

Going to school, at some point, the subject of slavery will come up in History class. I’ll admit that not every teacher gives the subject its due lesson. Some teachers would teach what’s in the textbook, and when I was going to school, it wasn’t much. I remember in one grade it was just one paragraph. When it came to black history, it fell upon my family to teach me.

That’s how I first heard of Denmark Vesey and his slave revolt in South Carolina and of Harriet Tubman, her being the “great Conductor” of the Underground Railroad. Of course, you cannot talk about the evils of slavery without talking about Nat Turner. His story was recently retold in the movie Birth Of A Nation. The film gave viewers the full breadth of his story. In comics his story has been told a few times, but none more eloquently than in Kyle Baker’s Nat Turner.

We open somewhere in Africa, where a group of slave catchers attack a small fishing village and put one such family into bondage. As each man, woman and child are stripped of clothing heads shaved neatly, and branded, making the humiliation endlessly distressing. As they board the ship, the trip was the closest thing to a nightmare, rats everywhere, people dying next to each other and bodies piled up in a tight space. A disturbing but inevitable scene ends this issue. One that the reader will never forget.

Overall, an honest and heartbreaking portrayal of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. It’s a comic that’ll stay with you. The story by Kyle Baker, though brief in dialogue, drives home the horrors of slavery. The art by Baker is beautiful. Altogether, this issue gives the raw truth about how slavery starts.

The Fifth Beatle Being Developed as a Limited Event Scripted Series

Bravo Media has announced the development of a limited event series based on the award winning graphic novel The Fifth Beatle. From Universal Cable Productions (UCP) and Sonar Entertainment, the project is based on Eisner Award-winning and Tony Award-winning producer Vivek J. Tiwary’s critically acclaimed bestselling graphic novel, The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story, exploring the complicated personal life of the band’s visionary manager who helped catapult the Fab Four to international stardom. Tiwary will pen the series adaptation and serve as executive producer along with Leopoldo Gout. The project includes Tiwary’s access to the John Lennon-Paul McCartney song catalog, the first Beatles-related biopic to secure such rights.

The Fifth Beatle recounts the true story of the legendary Beatles manager, Brian Epstein, a brilliant yet often tormented dreamer who discovered the band in the Cavern Club in Liverpool, then nurtured, protected and guided them to unprecedented worldwide success. As a gay Jewish man living in 1960s England where homosexuality was a felony, Epstein was a double outsider who struggled to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds.  He was instrumental in the Fab Four’s rise to fame and saw their potential when no one else did. Yet behind the music, Epstein suffered from loneliness and his crushing desires to be one of the boys and belong. Epstein grew to become not only the engineer of Beatlemania, but also a key architect of the cultural revolution of the sixties with his ambition to change the world and spread the Beatles’ messages of love and peace.

Published by Dark Horse Comics, The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story was written by Vivek J. Tiwary with art by Andrew C. Robinson and Kyle Baker.

The graphic novel has had a rocky road going from page to screen. In 2015 it was announced that Syco Entertainment and IM Global would bring it to the big screen. In March 2016, it was announced that Sonar Entertainment was developing the graphic novel as a multi-part television event series.

Dick Tracy Not Coming to Archie Due to Licensor “Mistake”

Archie Comics‘ Co-President/Editor/Writer/PR person Alex Segura went to Twitter earlier today to say that there will not be a Dick Tracy. A “mistake on the licensor’s part” is the cause. Tribune Content Agency discovered a “preexisting licensing deal that precludes” this project. The series was announced in early December.

Co-written by Segura and Michael Moreci, it would have featured art by Thomas Pitilli, colors by Dee Cunniffen, and lettering from Jack Morelli. The first issue also featured variant covers by Francesco Francavilla, Kyle Baker, Cat Staggs, and Michael Walsh. The comic series was to kick off in April 11, 2018.

Its focus was on the earlier years of the detective, “square one,” with a blend of the classic Dick Tracy and a “modern and dark noir feel.”
