Marvel Announces Silver Surfer, Moon Knight, The Infinity Entity, Mockingbird, and X-Men ’92

At the Diamond Summit taking place before this weekend’s Baltimore Comic Con, Marvel announced a bunch of new series coming out in 2016 as part of their All-New, All-Different reboot/relaunch (and blowing that past the promised 55-60 new comics we were told would be a part of it).

Dan Slott, Laura Allred, and Mike Allred will return on Silver Surfer in 2016. Marvel said they would release more details tomorrow.

Jeff Lemire and Greg Smallwood will be taking over creative duties for Moon Knight, which will return in 2016.

Jim Starlin and Alan Davis will be returning to their Infinity epic with The Infinity Entity. The four issue miniseries will focus on Adam Warlock. The third part of their epic begins in April 2016.

Chelsea Cain will be writing Mockingbird in a new ongoing series. An artist has not been announced. The character has been a part of the television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and her on again/off again spin-off series is back on again last I heard. So, another character from the live action universe getting a comic tie-in.

Spinning out of Secret Wars: Battleworld, artist Alti Firmansyah will team up with Chris Sims and Chad Bowers for an X-Men ’92 series. The series sees the team return to their world to open a new Xavier School with Cassandra Nova’s students enrolling too. The comic launches spring 2016.

AfterShock Comics’ Initial Slate of Writers

aftershock1As San Diego Comic‐Con kicks off this week, AfterShock Comics, the recently launched comic book company has announced its inaugural slate of award‐winning writers.

The list of AfterShock writers includes: Jimmy Palmiotti; Amanda Conner; Paul Jenkins; Justin Jordan; Phil Hester; Frank Barbiere; Marguerite Bennett; and Garth Ennis.

Launched in April 2015, AfterShock Comics is a comic book company that combines the creative edge of an independent comic book publisher with the strengths and experience of a traditional powerhouse. In addition to Editor‐in‐Chief Mike Marts, a former Marvel executive editor, Aftershock’s executive team includes: Chief Creative Officer Joe Pruett, an Eisner Award‐winning publisher and editor; Co‐CEO Michael Richter, an accomplished media and technology executive, most recently at Facebook, as well as an award‐winning filmmaker; Co‐CEO Jon Kramer, an entertainment entrepreneur with extensive worldwide production and distribution experience; President Lee Kramer, a film/TV production and development executive who has worked with some of the biggest names in Hollywood; and Senior VP of Investor Relations Jawad Qureshi, an experienced Silicon Valley entrepreneur and investor.

In addition to unveiling its initial writers slate, AfterShock also announced an anthology of short stories. Those writers include: Jim Starlin, Amy Chu, Brian Stelfreeze and industry icon Neil Gaiman.

SDCC 2015: Warren Ellis & Gale Anne Hurd Take on El Pantera for Universal + Kill Shakespeare!

UCP_Refresh_CMYK_FMAs San Diego Comic-Con 2015 kicks off, Universal Cable Productions (UCP) has unveiled several new deals that will continue to fortify the studio’s growing genre library and cater to the high demand for television content inspired by science fiction, graphic novel and comic book stories. As part of its overall deal with Valhalla Entertainment, UCP today announced renowned graphic novel writer Warren Ellis, will adapt the popular 1970s Mexican comic book and Televisa format El Pantera as his first original TV series with Gale Anne Hurd set to executive produce and Televisa USA to co-produce.

Based on the popular 1970s Mexican comic book and hit Spanish language TV series adapted by Televisa, El Pantera is a vigilante crime drama set in a fictional metropolis on the U.S. Mexico Border. When a young officer is appointed Head of Police, he only has one request: He asks that his friend, who was wrongfully imprisoned, be set free. Under the guise of his rumored death, the two create ‘El Pantera’ to rid the city of the Mexican mob. Warren Ellis is set to adapt the comic with Gale Anne Hurd’s Valhalla Entertainment attached to produce and Televisa USA to co-produce with UCP.

UCP is also developing the award-winning cult British film, The Machine into a scripted series for Syfy with the film’s Caradog James set to write the script and John Giwa-Amu to produce. The story follows a brilliant computer programmer, desperate to save his terminally ill daughter, who creates the first-ever piece of self-aware artificial intelligence.  But things go terribly wrong when the technology, designed to help injured soldiers, is hijacked by the government and used to create the ultimate robotic weapon. The Machine will follow multiple storylines as it takes a broad view of cutting edge scientific breakthroughs in genetic engineering, trans-humanism, and artificial intelligence.

Kill ShakespeareAdditionally, the studio has recently optioned the critically acclaimed comic series Kill Shakespeare, created by Anthony Del Col and Conor McCreery, and released by IDW Publishing. This dark take on Shakespeare – which has also spawned a stage production and board game – pits his greatest heroes (Hamlet, Juliet, Othello, Falstaff) against his most menacing villains (Richard III, Lady Macbeth, Iago) in an epic adventure to find and kill – or save – a reclusive wizard named William Shakespeare. Anthony Del Col and Conor McCreery are set to write.

UCP also announced this week a first-look production deal with legendary comic book publisher, Dark Horse Entertainment focused on developing and producing scripted programming from their extensive comic book library as well as new material.

Other notable genre projects in UCP’s development pipeline include: for Syfy: Channel Zero, a horror anthology series from Nick Antosca set to write the script, and Max Landis set to produce. The first season will be based on Candle Cove by Kris Straub, a story that originates from the user-generated internet horror phenomenon known as creepypasta;  Brave New World, based on the classic novel by Aldous Huxley published in 1932 with Les Bohem set to write, and Amblin attached to produce; Hyperion, based on the Hugo Award-winning science fiction novels that form The Hyperion Cantos by writer Dan Simmons with Bradley Cooper, Graham Kin, and Todd Phillips attached to executive produce and Itamar Moses to write the script and serve as co-executive producer.

UCP is also developing Dreadstar, based on the classic 1980s character from the Marvel-owned Epic Comics imprint by iconic Marvel comic book writer Jim Starlin with Evan Daugherty attached to adapt, BenderSpink attached to produce, and Starlin and Ford Gilmore set to executive produce.

Marvel Creators at Baltimore Comic-Con 2015

Baltimore Comic-Con is proud to welcome Marvel talent to the 2015 show: John Beatty, Greg Pak, Tom Raney, Jim Starlin, and Mike Zeck.

Starting his art career at the early age of 15, John Beatty first began inking at AC Comics. After hunting down Marvel Editor-in-Chief (at the time), Jim Shooter, at a convention, he was offered the opportunity to come to New York and get a paid try-out. Fortunately for Beatty, this worked out well, as he went on to spend 20 years working at DC and Marvel Comics on titles like Batman, JLA, The Adventures of Superman, Captain America, The Punisher, and Secret Wars. His recent work includes The Remaining original graphic novel by Kingstone Comics, and contributions to Hero Initiative projects including The Uncanny X-Men 100 Project and The Hellboy 100 Project.

Greg PakComics writer (and Rhodes Scholar) Greg Pak has been responsible for much-lauded runs on titles like Marvel’s Incredible Hulk (“Planet Hulk” and “World War Hulk”), Incredible Hercules, X-Men: Magneto Testament, and Red Skull, Dynamite Entertainment’s Battlestar Galactica, Valiant’s Eternal Warrior, and Aspen’s Dead Man’s Run. He has been named Wizard Magazine’s Breakout Talent of the Year, and his stories and characters have won numerous publication accolades as well. You can read Pak’s latest work on Marvel’s Storm, DC Comics’ Action Comics and Superman/Batman, and Dynamite Entertainment’s Turok, Dinosaur Hunter.

Tom Raney has spent much of his career working for the mid- to large-size publishers in the comics industry. A graduate of the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art, he has contributed to Marvel’s Ultimate Universe, Valiant’s relaunched titles, and Dark Horse Comics’ Star Wars among many other titles and publishers. In recent history, his artwork can be seen within the pages of DC Comics’ Threshold, Marvel’s Incredible Hulk, and Titan Comics’ Monster Massacre hardcover collection, and you can find his current work on Marvel’s Avengers Vs., and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and Inferno, and DC’s Injustice: Gods Among Us Year Four.

Jim StarlinThe multi-talented Jim Starlin has worked on both writing and creating art for some of the most noteworthy creations since his entry into the field of comics in the 1970s. The mind behind the Marvel character Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu, he is also responsible for a number of noteworthy cosmic characters in the Marvel Universe, including Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, and the villainous Thanos, all of whom were featured Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy feature motion picture. He developed noteworthy runs on Marvel’s Captain Marvel, Warlock, and Silver Surfer, Marvel mini-series Infinity Gauntlet, Infinity War, and Infinity Crusade, and DC Comics’ Batman, The Weird, and Cosmic Odyssey. His Death of Captain Marvel was the first Marvel graphic novel to be published. More recently, he has provided writing and art for DC’s Stormwatch and writing on Green Lantern: Mongul #23.2, and he returned to his classic villain with Marvel’s Thanos: The Infinity Revelation and Thanos: The Infinity Relativity.

Mike ZeckMike Zeck began his storied career in comics with Charlton Comics with their animation-related line of titles before moving to Marvel Comics to leave an indelible mark. Zeck provided art to unforgettable characters and titles such as 1987’s “Kraven’s Last Hunt” in the Spider-Man titles, “Circle of Blood” in The Punisher, and the classic Secret Wars featuring Zeck’s design on the classic black costume for Spider-Man (and later adopted by Venom). Zeck’s work has graced the pages and covers of Aquaman, Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, Green Lantern, G.I. Joe, G.I. Joe: Special Missions, Lobo, Deathstroke The Terminator, The Eliminator, and too many titles to mention here. His creator-owned project Damned recently appeared from BOOM! Studios, and his work is featured in IDW’s Mike Zeck’s Classic Marvel Stories Artist’s Edition.
