Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors are choosing up to five books and why they’re choosing the books. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Top Pick(s): Bloodshot Salvation #1 and Secret Weapons #4 (Valiant Entertainment) –  There’s a funny thing this week. There’s really only two comics I can’t wait to pick up from my LCS, and both are from Valiant: Bloodshot: Salvation #1 and Secret Weapons #4. While I’ve read both, I want to reread them both in print without the review copy watermark on them.

Mr. Crypt #1 (Alterna) – It’s a living skeleton and the comic is about $1.50. What’s not to love?

Top Pick: Jean Grey #7 (Marvel) – I’ve really been enjoying this series and seeing Jean meeting up with other heroes and learning from them has been fun. But to be totally honest, I’m really just looking forward to seeing Scarlet Witch in this issue. Not too much of a fan boy, eh?

Super Sons #8 (DC Comics) – This is a fun, action filled super hero book that you all should be reading.

U.S.Avengers #10 (Marvel) – I’m interested to see how the fall of Hydra will effect this team, and looking forward to them going out to look for Cannonball. This book is hit or miss with me, and the Secret Empire tie ins were just alright, so I’m hoping things pick up.

X-Men Gold #12 (Marvel) – This book has been a good read, even though I do have a few issues on how some characters have been depicted or altogether pushed to the side (looking at Storm). I would like to see this book be more of a team feel like the first few issues were; lately is just feels like ‘the tales of Shadowcat and Colossus’ with the rest of the team just popping up as support.

Batwoman #7 (DC Comics) – Kate and her dad spend some time stranded in the first installment of the Fear and Loathing story arc.

Harley Quinn #28 (DC Comics) – Harley’s running for office. An anti-heroine for the people!

Harley Quinn Batman Day Special (DC Comics) – I’m all for anything Harley related especially when we get to see her toxic relationship fable with Joker. Here’s to hoping that she stays smart and stays single .

Luke Cage #5 ( Marvel) – It’s going down in New Orleans and I’ve got popcorn.

Top Pick: Batman: The Red Death #1 (DC Comics) – I’m all in with DC’s latest even Metal and this one gives us the scoop on one of the alternate worlds’ Batman. I’ve read it and holy crap is it good.

Catalyst Prime: Superb #3 (Lion Forge Comics) – I’ve been sucked into the Catalyst Prime world and this series is standing out in a teenage superhero sort of way that has enough different to make it a must read.

Dark Ark #1 (AfterShock) – You know the story of Noah… but what about that other ark?

Misbegotten: Runaway Nun #1 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – Haven’t read this yet but it feels like the grindhouse sort of concept and movie that I really enjoy.

World of Animosity #1 (AfterShock) – This amazing comic world expands with this new series and is absolutely a world you should be checking out if you haven’t already.

Top Pick: Jean Grey #4 (Marvel) – Jean Grey is doing everything she can to see that she doesn’t suffer under the power of the Phoenix, like her “other” self did…and I am here for all of it! This has been a really great series with a strong lead character who isn’t taking crap from anyone, especially a cosmic fire bird. Her search for answers has been fun, and I am really looking to the inevitable showdown with the big bird itself.

Hulk #8 (Marvel) – This series has been a great read, following Jen as she struggled to keep her anger in check, but now that her Hulk has been released, it’s going to be more interesting to see how she learns to balance life as Jennifer and her new Hulk persona, or if one will take complete control. If you’re not already reading this book, I recommend jumping on board.

Weapon X #5 (Marvel) – This has been an exciting crossover with Old Man Logan, his team and Amadeus Cho. The team is tracking down the Weapon X program to shut it down for good, and along the way we’re getting some decent character interaction and action. I am excited to see if Weapon X’s ‘batch H’ prototype is released, because that will be a showdown not to be missed.

Top Pick: American Way: Those Above and Below #1 (Vertigo) – John Ridley is back and returns to the series he completed 10 years ago. It’s 1972 and tensions are rising in this heroes in the real world take that blew me away with its first issue.

Catalyst Prime: Accell #2 (Lion Forge Comics) – I loved the first issue and can’t wait to read the second. Just a lot of fun.

Centipede #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – I know this being on here might seem crazy, but the first issue is a lot of fun and hits the right buttons for us that grew up playing Atari.

Dark Days: The Casting #1 (DC Comics) – A bit heavier in DC lore than I like, but it’s setting up what feels like one hell of a mystery and one hell of a battle to come.

S##t and P##s (Retrofit Comics) – This indie publisher has never disappointed and this is no exception. A dark journey into a sewage processing plant built on top of the ruins of a failing civilization. The custodian of this horrid place encounters all types of things that should not be in this science fiction adventure.

Top Pick: X-O Manowar #4 (Valiant) – Two years ago, I would have laughed at you if you told me I’d be super excited to get my hands on this comic (despite having access to review copies I still buy this every month), I’d have laughed at you for hours. I genuinely though X-O Manowar was a stupid name with a stupid concept. The. I gave it a chance… and now it’s one of my favourite series. Each issue is a monthly highlight for me.

Scrimshaw #1 (Alterna) – The newsprint movement returns with another comic at $1.50. I have no idea what it’s about but every one of Alterna’s newsprint comics have been great so far. No reason not to get this, really.

Suicide Squad #20 (DC Comics) – I am hella excited for the start of the “False Flag” arc. A new arc means new mayhem and after what happened last issue, it means a new team leader and I can’t wait to see how it all shakes out.

Throwaways #9 (Image) – I think they’ve finally gotten the hang of things and there’s more focus than tricks in this issue.

Deadpool vs Punisher #5 (Marvel) – We’ve come to the end of the road and I am eagerly awaiting this finale while “Let the Bodies Hit the Floor” plays on a loop in head.

Jean Grey #3 (Marvel) – The newest take on Jean Grey isn’t here for the Phoenix foolishness and she will find a way to keep her out of her mind and body by any means necessary. So obviously, I’m all the way here for this!

Top Pick: Jean Grey #3 (Marvel) – I’m really enjoying this book and love how Jean Grey is being portrayed; a strong female character out to take control of her own life. She’s gotten flashes of The Phoenix coming for her, and surprisingly the X-Men aren’t taking it seriously (you’d think after everything they’ve been through with the Phoenix the mere mention of it would cause panic). But now Jean is off on her own to get some answers and do what she can to shape her destiny and not follow the path of her past self. It’s a great read with great writing and I strongly recommend it.

The Defenders #2 (Marvel) – I’m really liking seeing these characters together in their own book, even if it is to coincide with the upcoming Netflix series. There’s plenty of action and good banter between the characters and I can’t wait to see where this title goes.

Totally Awesome Hulk #20 (Marvel) – I don’t read this title, but I am really excited about the Weapons of Mutant Destruction crossover with Weapon X. I want to keep up with all the pieces to see this puzzle come together.

Top Pick: Batman/Elmer Fudd Special #1 and Jonah Hex/Yosemite Sam Special #1 (DC Comics) – DC has been knocking it out of the park with their crossovers. First their Hanna-Barbera ones and now with Looney Tunes. Each issue has been fantastic to read and generally have been good to great. They are exactly what comics should be, lots of fun.

Bankshot #1 (Dark Horse) – Alex De Campi and Chris Cross’ new series about a man who is either a modern-day Robin Hood or a terrorist. I read the first issue and immediately wanted to check out more.

Clue #1 (IDW Publishing) – The classic board game turned movie is now a comic book. I liked the game and loved the film and can’t wait to see what IDW does with it. I’m fully expecting multiple ending fun.

Eleanor & Egret #3 (AfterShock Comics) – A beyond adorable comic series about an art thief and her bird and the policeman who’s attempting to track them down. The story is cute and art is amazing.

Medisin #2 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – The concept is great, doctors who treat villains. The first issue hooked me and I’ve been looking forward to seeing what the second is like.
