On March 22 to March 24, 2019, Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo (C2E2) celebrates its tenth anniversary in style. This is going to be my fourth year at C2E2, and one thing that I love about the show is its merging of different strains of pop culture into a fun experience. For example, you can get an autograph from the ageless actor/Ant-Man Paul Rudd, then hurry over to Artist’s Alley and meet a comics legend like Chris Claremont or George Perez or your favorite webcomic artist, and then wrap up things up with a beer at the Revolution tent. Whether you’re into comics, cosplay, films, TV shows, or all kinds of gaming, C2E2 really has it all.
Here are six fun things to do at C2E2 during the three days of the show at McCormick Place.
Unfortunately, there’s no “Escape from Being Crushed by Quarter Bins with Unsold, Polybagged Copies of Death of Superman”, but C2E2 does offer two fun Escape Room experiences if you want to get away from the hustle, bustle, and lines of the con and solve some puzzles in a mindbending environment. There are two Escape Rooms at C2E2: one is “Detention: Escape from the Cursed High School”, and the other is “Secret Aboard Starship Atraeus”. Each room has multiple endings, a 45 minute time limit, and mysterious elements like ghostly spirits and potential freaky aliens. Spots are filling up so book your escape room ASAP!
Sponsored by The Logan Theatre, C2E2 Cinema offers free movie screenings for anyone with a convention badge on both Friday and Saturday night. Friday’s movies are Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) and the timeless classic Princess Bride followed by Wayne’s World and Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. As if that wasn’t enough, Saturday’s movie is Clueless, and there’s also a 1990s themed pre-party with a costume contest. You can go from dropping the big bucks on Alicia Silverstone, Paul Rudd, Breckin Meyer, and Donald Faison’s autographs and attending their Saturday reunion panel to watching them in their heyday on the big screen.
Clueless is one of the greatest Jane Austen adaptations of all time and really encapsulated the various looks and attitudes of the mid-1990s. (Full disclosure: I watched it on my 21st birthday intoxicated with a British grocery store cake in my lap.) Alicia Silverstone, Paul Rudd, Breckin Meyer, and Donald Faison are all attending C2E2, and if you can’t get their autograph, this panel is opportunity to soak in some 90s nostalgia and not harass Mr. Rudd with questions about Avengers: Endgame. Also, this panel is secretly a partial reunion of the late, great boy band DuJour fromJosie and the Pussycats.
So, some rumors/house ads have been going on around that Jonathan Hickman is making his triumphant return to Marvel Comics for his first new series after 2015’s Secret Wars. Hickman is a master of the long form epic/event with his work on titles like Secret Warriors, Fantastic Four, and New Avengers, and I’m excited to learn what his next saga will be. (I hope Leonardo da Vinci is involved.) You can find out more information about his work and fellow writer, Jason Aaron (Thor) at Marvel’s Next Big Thing panel. Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski will also be there so you know they mean business, and there will be some announcements about the House of Ideas’ summer slate of books.
Some of the best TV shows of all time, like Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and the criminally underrated Halt and Catch Fire, have aired on AMC, and the supernatural horror drama NOS4A2 might be their next big hit. It’s based on a novel by Joe Hill and is about an artist named Vic McQueen (Ashleigh Cummings), who has the power to track a mysterious immortal named Charlie Manx (Zachary Quinto). Manx is up to no good and feeds on children whose souls he places in a messed up world called Christmasland, where every day is Christmas. Fans at C2E2 will have the opportunity to see the first episode of NOS4A2 early before it airs on AMC on April 30.

1. Marv Wolfman and George Perez: In Conversation (Sunday)
George Perez recently announced a well-earned retirement from creating comics and attending most conventions (Except DragonCon and FetishCon). So, C2E2 is one of the last opportunities that fans have to meet the artist of New Teen Titans, Avengers, and Crisis on Infinite Earths, not to mention once the nicest people in comics. This panel with long time collaborator, Marv Wolfman, who was also responsible for co-creating Blade and Bullseye, should be interesting to attend as two legends reflect on their legacy and swap war stories of 40+ years in the comics industry.
The War Of The Realms is coming…and no corner of the Marvel Universe will be untouched! Marvel has revealed two new stunning variant covers: one by artist George Perez (with colors by Jason Keith) and one by Ryan Ottley (with colors Nathan Fairbairn).
This April, all hell will break loose as Marvel’s epic event from the award-winning creative team of Jason Aaron, Russell Dauterman, and Matthew Wilson usher in an event of unparalleled scale! Plus, don’t miss a special midnight release of War of the Realms #1 for retailers – be sure to check Marvel mailers for details!

Comic creator George Pérez has officially announced his retirement from comics. He posted online his reasons and his plans to wind down his career with a few convention appearances but this marks the end for a long and impactful career.
Pérez began his comics career in 1973 as an assistant to Ruch Buckler and made his professional debut in 1974 in Astonishing Tales #25 from Marvel Comics. He co-created the White Tiger (comics’ first Puerto Rican superhero) with Bill Mantlo.
His star really began to rise when he took over The Avengers and from there he worked on classics like The Inhumans, Fantastic Four, “The Korvac Saga,” but it was his move to DC where things really took off.
In 1980 George Pérez began to work on The New Teen Titans with Marv Wolfman (after working on Justice League of America). The series was a popular one and led to his working on the modern classic Crisis on Infinite Earths. He also worked on the classic “Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?” with writer Alan Moore where he inked Curt Swan’s pencils.
In 1987 he became the plotter and penciler for the rebooted Wonder Woman working with Greg Potter and Len Wein but eventually took over the full scripting chores.
His final original series was Sirens from BOOM! Studios which saw six issues released between September 2014 and December 2016.
In a career that spanned 46 years, he’s a creator who is cited as often being an influence for many today. No doubt he has had a major impact on the industry.
You can read his full statement below.
DATE : JANUARY 19, 2019 FROM : George Pérez
To all my loyal and kind fans who have supported me throughout the decades,
In recent months, there has been a great deal of speculation as to the future of my career, my health, my ability to draw and my future convention appearances. As a result, I would like to clear up everything first hand so that, hopefully, any rumors, speculation and misinformation can be laid to rest.
With respect to future published work in comics and such … while I know it’s been no secret that I’ve been dealing with a myriad number of health issues (diabetes, heart ailments, vision issues, etc.), they have indeed have forced me to, for all intents and purposes, formally retire from the business of creating new comic stories.
As for home commission requests, I’m afraid that my retirement must now extend to privately commissioned drawings as well. While I am gratified that all of the customers who have received their pieces were more than pleased with the results, some even consequently commissioning more of them, it’s just becoming too much of a strain on my eyes to produce the fully rendered ink and pencil-tone pieces on a quality level that justifies the price I’m being paid for them.
In regards to convention sketches, I will need to cut back on those as well. While I will no longer sketch at the conventions themselves, I will, through my art agent Spencer Beck of The Artists Choice, be taking orders for 5 ( FIVE ) con-style head sketches, per convention day that I am in attendance which will be done at home to be collected at the conventions. Fans placing orders must be personally present to pick up the piece , NO PROXIES. The price for these will be a good deal pricier than in the past, going for $100 each, but please take some solace that all the monies I earn for these sketches, as well as my appearance fees, will be donated to various charities. To place an order, or for initial details, please contact Spencer / The Artist’s Choice directly at Spencerbck@aol.com. Any changes or further announcements will be made by Spencer and myself on his website theartistschoice.com/perez.htm and on my fan website george-perez.net
Furthermore, for those that are interested … although I will only be attending about six conventions this year and one make up convention in 2020 ( *** see below for complete schedule ) 2019 will more than likely be my last year touring this great land meeting so many great fans. As the next decade begins, I have two shows, Dragon Con and Fetish Con that have personal meaning to me which I intend to attend yearly unless circumstances prevent it … but, for all intents, 2019 will wind down that part of my career as well. The good news is, even though I will not be sketching at the shows, I will still be autographing and be available for photo ops, and, as has been my policy throughout my career, I will not be charging for either.
In closing, please don’t feel sorry for me about all these life and career changes. Thankfully I earn more than enough income through royalties to have a comfortable life wherein I may never need to work again. Unless, of course, something really tempting comes along and I’m given sufficient lead time. Hey, you never know.
Long story short, I will be just fine. I’ve had a wonderfully good run doing exactly what I have wanted to do since I was a child. Now I can sit back and watch the stuff I helped create entertain whole new generations. That’s a pretty nice legacy to look back on.
And so much of that is thanks to all of you, the GREATEST fans in the world. I am humbled and forever grateful.
Wishing you all a safe, happy and healthy 2019 and beyond,
UPDATE: Mr. Perez will not be accepting requests until approximately 30 days before each specific show. Sketches will be approved at one per person, family or address. First come, First serve. So , please check back 30 days before the show. He will only be doing 9 x 12 head shots and they must be paid for in full at the time the order is accepted.
