Review: The New 52: Futures End #48

DC-Comics-New-52-Futures-End-48 cover“Eye Am Your Future.”

I read a lot of The New 52: Futures End, but at some point I trailed off. While the story was interesting, the weekly deluge of it all caught up to me as missed issues grew more and more. The New 52: Futures End #48 wraps up the weekly series, sort of (and we’ll get to that). [I know this review begins the same way as Earth 2: World’s End #26, but that’s because my thoughts and experience is similar].

The issue has a hodgepodge of creators listed including writers Brian Azzarello, Jeff Lemire, Dan Jurgens and Keith Giffen and artists Allan Goldman, Freddie Williams II, Andy Macdonlad, Stephen Thompson and Scott Hanna. That’s a lot of input, and the only spot I think that shows up is with the art which is ok, but nothing spectacular. It’s decent art, but for a huge issue, I expected a bit more.

As someone who hasn’t read the series for quite a while, I was able to hop into the story and get what was going on, so that’s solid. There’s a couple of things I had to think through, but generally I knew what was up. The story is interesting because of that whole wrapping up. I can’t say if it’s satisfying for long-time readers, and it leaves one massive cliffhanger that I wonder how or if it’ll be explored post DC’s next big event Convergence. Potentially it can be very cool, and something I’d check out.

The ending was interesting enough for me to want to go back and see what I missed, it seems like it’s a time-traveling head trip, but standing on its own, the issue is decent, and what stands out is its rather bleak ending. To see a comic end on a somewhat downer (I don’t consider that a spoiler) is interesting, and almost welcome in a weird way. For DC, which I’d consider a bit sunnier than rivals, it’s an odd tone, and one I welcome.

Is this really the End for Futures End? We’ll find out in a few months. This gets me to want to find out what’s next. To be continued in Batman Beyond #1?

Review: Project Black Sky Sampler

project black sky sampler coverSince my return to regular comic reading I have been seeing these pesky little imprints on comics that look somewhat interesting.  Always printed by Dark Horse, they say “Black Sky Project.”  The problem with me is that I am somewhat of an absolute reader, in that I read absolutely everything or absolutely nothing.  In terms of Project Black Sky, I have never really known where to start, despite the fact that most series are not very advanced, and so I never really did get into any of them.  I would rather start with a #1 and then sort out what I want to read after I have worked my way through the series.  As if Dark Horse was reading my thoughts I discovered that they will be releasing a Project Black Sky Sampler, including the first issues of each of the series under this imprint.

Suffice to say, that for anyone that is curious about any of the series or the overall tie-in that this is an excellent place to start.  Each of the main four main characters was introduced and explained and the plot got going for each of them.  In my opinion, the best was by far Ghost, whose supernatural background does not match my own tastes very well, but whom is well written and well-drawn as well as providing an engaging story from the get-go.   If there is one criticism of this sampler it is that going in that I thought that Project Black Sky would be better explained than it was, as opposed to this being essentially just a collection.  That is likely to be the response of the readers that have already been invested into these series.  This issue is not really for them, unless they are trying to complete a collection.

The overall effect of this release is what it aimed for though, at least in terms of myself as a reader.  While three of the series I am happy to follow in passing, I am likely going to give Ghost a try on a monthly basis, and for anyone interested in a superhero setting outside of the Big Two, they might just find something, or everything, that they are after in this book.

The Week in Comic Reviews

It’s been a while since I’ve done some quick comic reviews, but I do read a hell of a lot each week, and I don’t have time to do long reviews for each. So, I decided to bring back my quick reviews to give everything I read their due, and let you know what I think. These won’t be in depth, but you’ll get an idea of what I think of each.

The 7th Sword #2

In the aftermath of a vicious attack, Zenzion’s new leader, Kathleen Galway, seeks out battle-weary Daniel Cray to help defend her people and her home. But will the reluctant warrior pick up his Malathane blade one final time?

The series is two issues in and have been pretty interesting. This is a western/samurai tale set on an alien world. Each issues has been good, but I think the greater story together is what to measure this one by. Still, good for those who enjoy either genre.

Artifacts #37

When someone uses math to access an ancient and evil power, it’s up to Tilly Grimes to find the answer to stopping them. But even with Tom Judge and the Rapture on her side, this may be too big a problem for the Numeromancer to solve.

While I generally thought the story was ok (though resolved rather quickly), my biggest issue with this story arc has been the art, which is WAY too dark at times to figure out what’s going on. Artifacts has seen better days in story and art.

Axe Cop: The American Choppers #1

President of the World Axe Cop reunites with Super Axe, an old friend from college, and the two of them decide to start a superteam of axe-wielding heroes to defend America, called the American Choppers. They are joined by Captain Axe, Axe Girl, Axe Woman, Axe Dog, and other axe-wielding heroes. The only problem is that there are no bad guys left, but that all changes when mysterious giant creatures attack the city!

I’m very new to the whole Axe Cop thing. I watched the ADHD cartoon series, which lead me to this. My “first issue” and it’s enough for me to come back for more of the Axe family. For folks who are reading this after seeing the cartoon, does Axe Cop now sound like Ron Swanson?

B.P.R.D. #119

As Manhattan erupts with Lovecraftian demons, a young psychic must lead the remaining B.P.R.D. crew through the monster-packed streets of New York back to headquarters for safety, as Liz Sherman goes supernova.

This arc comes to a close, and it’s a solid ending. There’s a lot here that gets wrapped up, and that’ll lead to what comes next. I think all those threads that are left hanging are partially why I have this as a read. There’s some plot points I wish were a bit more completed. B.P.R.D. fans should be happy though.

Brain Boy: The Men from G.E.S.T.A.L.T. #1

Agent Price’s new mission pits him against a doomsday cult leader with a political agenda that poses a direct threat to the president. But a mysterious hive mind has more menacing plans for Brain Boy. He’ll have no choice but to go head to head—brain to brain—with the mysterious Men from G.E.S.T.A.L.T.!

To say Brain Boy is fun is an understatement. There’s a mix of pulp, there’s a mix of modern action. This second volume starts off with a bang and I’m sure this second volume will be as exciting as the first. I mean, the first part of the issue is really exciting, and what a twist.

East of West #12

A last ditch effort is undertaken to avoid a war between the nations by the most unlikely person on the planet. The remains of the Chosen reassemble.

I’m not sure what I like more, the story or the art. So much happens in this issue, and those actions will reverberate for a long time. An amazing series if you haven’t had a chance to check it out. It’s not too late… though it might be for the nations.

Forever Evil #7

It’s evil versus evil in the shocking “take-no-prisoners” conclusion to Forever Evil! What will be the fate of Lex Luthor and his Injustice League? Who will live – and who will die? And why is The Hooded Man the most feared being from the Syndicate’s world? Do not miss this startling finale that will leave the DC universe reeling and reveal the secrets to the future!

The DC event wraps up. But something seemed a bit off. While there’s some cool moments, everything wraps up quickly, and the titanic battle I was expecting doesn’t happen. The ending is good, just not as great as it could have been… and we’re not going to go into the delay.

Justice League #30

It all changes here with the first chapter of “Injustice League”! The next era of the Justice League begins as heroes quit, villains join and a Justice League roster you’ve never seen before emerges, led by the world’s greatest hero — Lex Luthor?! As the dust settles and the bodies are buried, the violent consequences of Forever Evil must be dealt with — while a mysterious new force sets its target on the League. But is this force friend or enemy? And why does he want Luthor dead? (If you ask Batman, it’s a long list.)

If you want to know where the DC universe goes post Forever Evil this is a good comic to start with. Villains are heroes. Heroes are villains. It’s very interesting, and a great issue to kick off where DC goes next.

A breath of fresh air for the Transformers comics. The look and style of the story are both very different from what’s come before. The style has a manga/anime feel about it, and the story is more of a detective story. Both are very cool, and that, along with such an interesting new character have created an awesome new Transformers series.

The excellent series continues into the second half of its miniseries. There so much going on including a discussion of god, country, and so much more. It’s been a fascinating read for four issues, and I can’t wait to see where it goes next.

This series, which is also a book, and soon to be television series, is an interesting mix of politics and action. Here, the vampires are a minority persecuted by normal humans. Review: The Movement #1

3015012-movementWe are faceless. We are limitless. We see all. And we do not forgive.

Who defends the powerless against the GREEDY and the CORRUPT? Who protects the homeless and poverty-stricken from those who would PREY upon them in the DARK OF NIGHT?

When those who are sworn to protect us abuse their power, when toxic government calls down super-human lackeys to force order upon the populace…finally, there is a force, a citizen’s army, to push order BACK.

Let those who abuse the system know this as well: We have our OWN super humans now. They are not afraid of your badges or Leagues. And they will not be SILENCED.

We are your neighbors. We are your co-workers. And we are your children.

The Movement was billed as DC Comics taking on the Occupy Movement, it was to dive in to the 99%. Having read this first issue, I don’t see it. The series is more Teen Titans with a “C” list cast than a political tinged comic.

The comic isn’t bad at all. It’s good and a decent read. To see a new series featuring not big names, something new, is great. I think what it was pitched as, might work against it.

The fist issue is all set up. The series takes place on Coral City where powered teens have declared an area under their protection, directly confronting police in the first issue. This isn’t so much Occupy as it’s Black Bloc. There’s direct confrontation instead of non-violence and there seems to be some leadership, again not exactly and Occupy thing.

But, the series does seem to be setting the ground work for what would happen if powered individuals used their powers to help their local community. That could be interesting and something new.

While the first issue didn’t blow me away, it was interesting enough for me to check out the next one to see what Simone has in store for us.

DC Comics Provides a First Look at The Movement

Back in February, DC Comics announced the launch of the new ongoing monthly and politically charged series, The Movement. Hitting stores next month, The Movement #1 comes to you from the creative team of writer Gail Simone and artist Freddie Williams II.

Talking to Comic Vine, Simone said:

The fun of something like The Movement is that it’s a logical extension of how citizens who aren’t media giant journalists, Gotham billionaires, or mythical princesses view the way power works in the DCU. How does someone feel when the world is full of superheroes, but all the problems of the world still exist?

In another interview she said:

I don’t think the book is about liberal vs. conservative. It’s about values that comics have always been about, the struggle against injustice on behalf of the little guy, the powerless and innocent. That’s pretty bi-partisan.

As for what characters will be appearing in the series? Simone says it’s “mostly new characters,” but there’s some with ties in the DCU. We do know of two characters appearing, Katharsis, the brutal avenger from Knightfall arc in Batgirl, and Tremor, “a wonderful badass character” who appeared in the pre-New 52 Secret Six.

DC Comics Takes on Occupy With The Movement and The Green Team

It’s the 1% plus the 99%! Today, DC Comics announced two new series that join their “Edge” family of titles. The two new comics are The Movement and The Green Team. Each tackles themes

The Movement hits shelves May 1 and comes from the creative team of writer Gail Simone and artist Freddie Williams II. Simone has said the story is an idea she’s had for some time. The comic is about power, who owns it, who uses it, and who suffers from its abuse.

As we increasingly move to an age where information is currency, you get these situations where a single viral video can cost a previously unassailable corporation billions, or can upset the power balance of entire governments. And because the sources of that information are so dispersed and nameless, it’s nearly impossible to shut it all down.

The Green Team comes to shelves May 22 from the Eisner Award-winning creative team Art Baltazar and Franco teaming up with artist Ig Guara.

Baltazar teased:

The real question is: Can money buy you anything in the DC universe? Would it make you powerful? Can it make you a hero? Can money make you…Super?

Franco has said about the project:

If you had unlimited wealth, could you use that to make the lives of people better? Would you help your fellow man? Would you buy powers? You need to read this and find out.

Bryan Young at Big Shiny Robot has interviews with Gail Simone and Art Baltazar and Franco.

The Occupy Movement has become a popular topic in comics leading to the formation of Occupy Comics.
