Fan Expo 2011 and the Djurdjevic Incident

Bookmark and Share

The bloggers are all a twitter over a supposedly tense panel that occurred at Fan Expo 2011.  The panel about Marvel comics featured Marko Djurdjevic, Steve Epting and Jonathan Hickman.  It was reported elsewhere that Djurdjevic was a bit pissy on the panel slamming Marvel.

Over on their Twitter account ForeignMatter, who was there, recounts the panel.  In an extended Tweet, they wrote:

I was at the panel last night and Marko Djurdjevic came off as charming and honest about his feelings of how he was treated with Marvel. Not mentioned in the article is the fact that Hickman, and I paraphrase, said something like “Sounds like you are going through a divorce”, at which Marko and the rest of the crowd had a good chuckle at.

Some of the comments said about Straczynski may be a little incendiary, but people are entitled to their opinions and some are not always going to get along with others. In my mind Marko saved the panel from being boring as Hickman didn’t arrive until half the way through, but Marko also had to deal with technical difficulties which may have annoyed him a little.

And while they came down from the platform they were all amicable. So villainizing Marko for press reasons, and a story that is blown way out of proportion is horrid. I thought press was supposed to be objective.

Below are all their related tweets on the “incident.”

ABOUT OWEN WISEMAN

Owen Wiseman writes graphic novels, screenplays, and prose. Owen was raised by hippies in the Pacific Northwest, and fed a steady diet of appropriate books and inappropriate movies. In seventh grade, he was accidentally put into a Japanese class, and the venerable Furado-sensei convinced him to stay. He taught Owen about the language, culture, and fascinating history of this complex and beautiful island nation, and Furado-sensei’s passion for the Japanese culture triggered Owen’s love for it as well.

ABOUT NAM KIM

Nam Kim is a Philadelphia-based artist, founder and director of Studio Imaginary Lines, an all-purpose design house which produces original content for comic books, video games and commercial advertising. Nam is a self-taught illustrator who credits artists such as Burne Hogarth, Jim Lee and Masamune Shiro for shaping his artistic style and vision.

ABOUT JEFF CAHN

After graduating from Pomona College, Jeff Cahn returned to his hometown of New Orleans, where he interned on the set of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button for Digital Domain’s Oscar winning visual effects team. Once the shoot wrapped, he returned to Los Angeles and now works at Benaroya Pictures and Publishing as a story developer and writer of both screen and comics.

Hobby Star Fan Expo vs. UFC Fan Expo – Fight!

Bookmark and Share

Pop culture conventions are in a resurgence across North America with what seems to be dozens of added shows in the last year.  Well, it looks like some of those cons will not be fighting it out in who has the best guests, coolest exclusives and biggest attendance.  Hobby Star Marketing, who handle the Toronto Fan Expo Convention, have filed an injunction against Zuffa LLC, which operates the Ultimate Fighting Championship league (UFC), and Reed Exhibitions over the name of Zuffa’s upcoming event, UFC Fan Expo.  That show is taking place in Toronto this weekend which also hosts the latest UFC pay-per-view event, UFC 128 which features some high profile fights including legend Randy Couture vs. Lyoto Machida and a title belt fight featuring headliners Georges St. Pierre vs. Jake Shields.

Hobby Star has filed a trade-mark infringement over the use of the term “fan expo” as well as the slogan “the ultimate fan experience.”  They’ve also taken issue with the website http://www.ufcexpon.com.  The lawsuit was filed in a  federal court in Toronto.  The UFC has held other events with the words “fan expo” throughout the world.  There’s no mention of those in this suit.

Zuffa is the primary defendant while Reed Exhibitions as the organizer is also mentioned.  What makes this more interesting is Reed Exhibitions puts together the New York Comic Con and New York Anime Festival.  Both of which could be seen as a competitor to Hobby Star’s Fan Expo.  Could this really just be bad blood between two comic book conventions?

Who knows how serious this is and how far in the courts it’ll go.  My gut tells me there’s more to this than a complaint over two words.  In the end, maybe one will give up in the fight and tap out?

Fan Expo Saturday

A busy and crazy day at the 2009 Toronto Fan Expo.  The convention hall was utterly packed in the morning to the point they were limiting people in the building.  We just made it through at noon to get in.  We skipped over the panels planned, instead hitting the floor and playing Talisman.  Some great photos were taken and will all be posted up tomorrow after the show closes.  Here’s some of the highlights from the show:

  1. God of War III and Uncharted 2 look amazing.
  2. The DC booth was just free comics, no effort, and the people manning it had an attitude.  They got a beat down.
  3. The Marvel booth on the other hand was fantastic and full of energy and good attitude.  They get it overall.
  4. Tron Legacy looks amazing, the cycle is just awesome looking.
  5. Coolest promo goes to a light up Green Lantern ring promoting the recent cartoon movie release.
  6. Talisman is still an amazing game, especially with your obnoxious friends.
  7. I haven’t lost any board game abilities (ie was calling the dice rolls and rolling whatever I needed).
  8. It’s a convention, the smells were “interesting.”
  9. Toronto is amazing and I need to plot how to move there.
  10. This show is easily morphing into San Diego Comic Con East.

Geek Fest ’09 Begins!

We’ve arrived in Toronto, we have our badges, and we’re checked into our hotel (a junior suite), ready to go to Fan Expo 2009.  We arrived in Toronto late this time and our usual debauchery started early.  All we were able to do so far was grab our passes and walk around the floor.

If you’re in the Toronto area and enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, comics, video games, games, or horror, this is a great show to get to.

Fan Expo ’07

By the time you read this I’ll have arrived in Buffalo on my way to Toronto for Hobbystar’s Fan Expo ’09.  But, in the mean time here’s photos from the last time I went 2007.
