John Carter: Warlord of Mars Launches in November from Ron Marz and Dynamite

Dynamite Entertainment has announced a brand new chapter in the history of Edgar Rice Burroughs creation, John Carter: Warlord of Mars, to be written by the masterful pen of comics legend Ron Marz. Illustrated by newcomer Abhishek Malsuni, John Carter: Warlord of Mars is the newly-minted cornerstone of the publisher’s Warlord of Mars line, launched in the wake of their May 2014 announcement of the comprehensive licensing agreement between Dynamite and Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.

John Carter: Warlord of Mars welcomes science fiction and fantasy fans to the exotic landscape of Barsoom, where displaced earthling John Carter has to save his adopted world, not to mention his beloved Dejah Thoris, from an enemy like no other he has ever faced. John Carter must truly become a Warlord of Mars against an adversary who is every bit his equal on the savage red planet.

John Carter debuted in 1912 as the lead character in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ first novel, serialized as Under The Moons Of Mars in the pulp magazine, The All-Story, and later published as a complete novel retitled A Princess of Mars. The character excited the imagination of readers and quickly imprinted onto the public psyche. As many literary and popular culture scholars attest, John Carter served as the template for a litany of adventure heroes to follow, from Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, and Superman to the Jedi Knights of Star Wars fame and Avatar.

Dynamite’s John Carter: Warlord of Mars comes on the heels of the reacquisition of comic book rights by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. that had been held by Walt Disney Pictures and its Marvel Entertainment subsidiary, as well as a recent legal settlement with Dynamite that cleared the way for Dynamite to introduce key characters and plot elements from the John Carter backstory that were, until now, absent from recent comic book interpretations.

John Carter: Warlord of Mars #1 will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ September Previews catalog for release in November.

Edgar Rice Burrough’s The Mucker Webcomic Launches with Ron Marz & Lee Moder

Returning to the spotlight for the first time in a century, Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic rough ‘n tumble man of action, The Mucker, is making a digital debut this Saturday, January 18, 2014, in an all-new adventure strip written by Ron Marz and drawn by Lee Moder. The strip will be available on the Burroughs website.

Marz is a long time Burroughs fan. In a release he explained:

I grew up on the work of Edgar Rice Burroughs and, to a large extent, I’m the kind of writer I am because of Edgar Rice Burroughs. I’m following not only in his footsteps, but in those of so many other creators who have left their mark on these concepts and characters. My job is to make these stories worthy for existing fans and completely accessible for new fans.

Though not as well-known as Burroughs’ other works of science fiction, fantasy and adventure, like Tarzan of the Apes and John Carter of Mars, The Mucker is a unique story about the exploits of Burroughs’ only anti-hero – Billy Byrne, a brash and brawling street tough from Chicago’s West Side – grounded in the harsh realities of life in the slums of the early 1900’s. Decades before Indiana Jones uncovered the Lost Ark and Rambo fought his personal guerrilla wars, the ruthless Mucker would find himself on whatever side of the law suited his savage nature, taking on crooked fight promoters, brutal gangsters, sinister kidnappers, ferocious headhunters and a femme fatale or two.

Artist Lee Moder, known for his work on Legion of Superheroes, Wonder Woman and Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E., combines a classic sense of design, setting and anatomy with a flair for exciting storytelling.

Review: Warlord of Mars: Dejah Thoris #26

A former student betrays his master, roping a younger student into his treachery. A woman clad in less than a cubic meter of cloth and golden pasties helps the tubby old master defeat his students and activate a 500,000 year old time portal. Add to that the Edgar Rice Burroughs Barsoomian milieu and you just might have the fixings for a 26^th issue to this series.

My experience with Warlord of Mars: Dejah Thoris is tenuous at best. I’m a huge fan of the original novels, the first of which was published in 1917, and the series is a great mash-up of the swords-and-sandals action that would develop in the following decades and a great exemplar of mainstream early American science fiction. I say that my feelings toward this book are tenuous, because I struggle with the continued portrayal of Dejah Thoris in nothing but a bikini, despite the fact that Robert Napton is actually a skilled writer, and he captures the swashbuckling adventurist flare of Barsoom expertly in Warlord of Mars: Dejah Thoris #26.

Napton presents a stand-alone issue that details Dejah’s visit to her old archaeology professor’s dig site, a hallowed ancient city called Dorvas. Swashbuckling and decapitation ensues, and Dejah and professor Syl Mak save the day (but Mak’s old and current students get a failing grade—academic pun, anyone?). The narrative fits nicely into the 24 pages, never feeling rushed or tiresome, and paces along so that I felt eager to finish up the issue.

Carlos Rafael and Carlos Lopez are a great team, with Rafael providing the solid lines and detailed expressive faces that help push the story along, and Lopez working his colors like any good colorist. It’s nothing ground breaking, but the pages are great fun and, again, Rafael makes facial expressions pop! Also, it’s clear that Rafael is skilled with drawing the female figure; you would have to be literally blind not to pick up on that…

It is frustrating, however, that Warlord of Mars: Dejah Thoris doesn’t seem to fall into continuity with the other Barsoom book by Dynamite, Warlord of Mars, since Dejah’s father and grandfather are mentioned early on in issue #26, but readers of the other series will know that that can’t be possible. Still, a fun read if you have the time or are a fan of Barsoom; I guess there could be other motivations for picking up a book featuring Dejah Thoris, though.

Tarzan Swings Back Into Action in “The Complete Russ Manning Newspaper Strips!

IDW Publishing has announced that the Library of American Comics will be collecting comics legend Russ Manning’s classic run with Edgar Rice Burroughs’ King of the Jungle in 2013! Tarzan: The Complete Russ Manning Newspaper Strips is a four-volume series. The first three volumes will chronologically collect all of Manning’s daily black & white and full-color Sunday strips from 1967 to 1974, while the fourth volume will collect the remaining Sunday strips, which Manning continued to do until 1979.

The series of hardcover volumes will commence May 29th with Tarzan: The Complete Russ Manning Newspaper Strips, Vol. 1: 1967 – 1969. Fans will be treated to the first-ever collection of a historic turning point in Tarzan history: when Russ Manning was handpicked by the Burroughs estate to return the strip to its creator’s original vision. Manning put together a dream team of assistants in this historic endeavor, including future comics greats Dave Stevens, William Stout, and Mike Royer, creating one of the most loaded rosters in comics history, and a perfect opportunity for new fans to discover the adventures of Viscount Greystoke.

In his introduction to Volume One, William Stout writes, “Russ Manning was a natural storyteller. He may also be one of the most underrated writers in comics. His beautiful art is so captivating that it’s easy to understand how it might overshadow his scripts. He was as adept with telling Tarzan tales in contemporary Africa as he was setting Ape Man stories in dinosaur-infested Pal-ul-don.”
