The only way through Long Con is with a badge, so after a run-in with a murderous cosplay goon squad, Dez, Victor, and Loren set out to procure some. Luckily, there’s a sizable black market running out of the old Salad Saloon. Unluckily, murderous cosplay goon squads are more difficult to shake than previously thought. Plus, a flashback reveals the super secret origins of boob windows!

Dez and Victor haven’t seen each other since the world ended five years ago, leaving Dez trapped inside the Los Spinoza Convention Center and Victor writing articles for a post-apocalyptic newspaper about how to properly season shoelaces for human consumption. So the two have got a lot to catch up on—and when Dez learns the world outside the convention center isn’t infested with radioactive zombies, she’s determined to get not just herself and her intern out, but all the other imprisoned con-goers.

Review: The Long Con #1

Five years ago, a cataclysmic event obliterated everything within a fifty-mile radius of the Los Spinoza Convention Center — including the attendees of Long Con, the world’s biggest (and longest) comic convention. But unknown to the outside world, the con-goers not only survived, they kept the convention going. When proof of their survival surfaces, reporter Victor Lai is sent to investigate — after all, he was covering the con that fateful day and escaped mere minutes before everything went kablooie… abandoning his nerdy pal Dez in the process. So clearly he’s the perfect person for the job, and he won’t get trapped inside like some kinda idiot. Right?

Things get weird in the premiere issue of The Long Con, as past and present collide in numerous ways. The comic teases what happened in the days before a cataclysmic event decimated everything inside a fifty-mile radius of Los Spinoza Convention Center where it just so happens that a major comic convention was being held. The comic uses the location and premise to have fun with it all delivering a first issue that never fully reveals what happened. It also pokes fun at fandom, and Star Trek, but never so in a mean way. You can tell there’s a love of the subject matter and it’s all in a good and harmless way. The characters are varied and while we only have two main ones so far, there’s more than enough to stand them apart.

The art style manages to balance the before and after events of the quarantine well giving a very clear delineation between the time periods. The true surprise, and fun, lies in the present as Victor enters the Los Spinoza Convention Center. The art takes inspiration from geekdom and conventions and uses it all in some entertaining ways. Like the writing, the art is having fun with it all.

There’s a love of the subject matter and this is a solid entry into the growing genre of comic conventions gone wrong. A lot of the fun will be what winks and nods to fandom will be throughout and as a start, this is solid, fun, entertainment.

Review: The Odyssey of Sergeant Jack Brennan

Anyone who has been in the military and been on deployment, all have different experiences. Most people who are not or never have been in the military would even know, that there is a good number of military members who have never been and will never be on deployment. For those of who have been, we always get these pre-deployment briefings, letting us know what can we expect. This is where we find out where we are going, what is our mission and the expected length of the deployment.

There is a ton of things that most of these briefings, don’t tell you, and the main thing to me, has always been PTSD. There is nothing like when you are somewhere public, with people doing normal things, and certain things just trigger you, and it is nothing you can explain to your family and/or friends. Only people who have been deployed, can truly understand what you go through, and not everyone gets PTSD, but enough of us do, and most keep it under control but those unfortunate souls, who can’t, suffer the most and may pay the ultimate price. In The Odyssey of Sergeant Jack Brennan, writer Bryan Doerries brings you to a world, which finds parallels between Homer’s Odyssey and those of most military members on deployment, where most of these characters suffer from some form of PTSD.

Within the first few pages, the reader and is introduced to Sgt. Jack Brennan. whose infantry squad has been cleared to go back home, but he wants them to know a few things. This is where he tells his men the story of Odysseus, even embellishing part of the original story, for them to relate it things he and them have encountered in war and at home. As the story moves forward, the reader realizes even though the story is familiar, just how affecting, PTSD has always been, as Homer spoke of it in various ways through the Odyssey. By the end of the book, the back and forth narrative between the infantry squad’s story and the Odyssey, leaves the readers the same place these men want to be… home.

Overall, an excellent story, that draws comparisons between modern military deployments and those of ancient times. The story by Doerries, is smart, affecting, and emotional, as it reminded me of scenes from my own life. The art by Ruliffson, Jones, Andersen, Meconis, and Bertozzi, is seamless and complements the story. Altogether, an important book, that may serve as a primer for those with family members who are in the military and for a better understanding of PTSD.
