Vault Announces The Blue Flame by Christopher Cantwell, Adam Gorham, Kurt Michael Russell, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou

Vault Comics has announced The Blue Flame, an utterly unique and thought-provoking cosmic superhero maxi-series from writer Christopher Cantwell, artist Adam Gorham, colorist Kurt Michael Russell, letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, and designer Tim Daniel. 

The Blue Flame is a cosmic hero. The Blue Flame is a DIY vigilante that fights crime on the streets of Milwaukee. The Blue Flame is a blue collar HVAC repairman named SAM BRAUSAM. In the wake of a horrific tragedy, the boundaries of the Blue Flame’s identity blur even further. Now, before a universal trial, the Blue Flame must prove that humanity is worth saving. But in order to do that, Sam Brausam has to save himself. Can he?

The Blue Flame #1 will hit store shelves in May 2021, and will debut with a special Vault Vintage cover from Nathan Gooden and Tim Daniel that pays homage to Dave Stevens’ legendary cover to Rocketeer Adventure Magazine #1.

A First Look at Disney’s New Rocketeer

In February Disney announced The Rocketeer, a new animated adventure for young kids debuting in 2019 and inspired by the popular comic book series by Dave Stevens.

The new animated series focuses on Kit, a young girl who receives a surprise package on her birthday revealing she’s next in line to become the Rocketeer, a legendary superhero who has the ability to fly with the help of a rocket-powered jet pack. Armed with her cool new gear and secret identity, Kit is ready to take flight and save the day with her gadget-minded best friend, Tesh, and airplane mechanic uncle, Ambrose, who join her on her epic adventures.

IDW Publishing and DC Entertainment have announced the meeting of two of comics’ greatest pulp heroes! Dave Stevens’ high-flying Cliff Secord will finally cross paths with Will Eisner’s iconic Denny Colt this summer in The Rocketeer/The Spirit: Pulp Friction! The four-issue series, taking off in July, will also pack quite the creative wallop, being written by multi-Eisner Award-winning scribe Mark Waid and drawn by the legendary Paul Smith!

The Rocketeer/Spirit: Pulp Friction features a murder mystery and political intrigue. From the grim and gritty streets of Central City where The Spirit navigates through the urban underbelly of corruption to the sunny skies of Los Angeles where The Rocketeer soars above the Hollywood elite, these two classic characters will become enthralled in murder, mayhem, and all manner of danger—and with a healthy dose of signature humor tossed in for good measure.

Tarzan Swings Back Into Action in “The Complete Russ Manning Newspaper Strips!

IDW Publishing has announced that the Library of American Comics will be collecting comics legend Russ Manning’s classic run with Edgar Rice Burroughs’ King of the Jungle in 2013! Tarzan: The Complete Russ Manning Newspaper Strips is a four-volume series. The first three volumes will chronologically collect all of Manning’s daily black & white and full-color Sunday strips from 1967 to 1974, while the fourth volume will collect the remaining Sunday strips, which Manning continued to do until 1979.

The series of hardcover volumes will commence May 29th with Tarzan: The Complete Russ Manning Newspaper Strips, Vol. 1: 1967 – 1969. Fans will be treated to the first-ever collection of a historic turning point in Tarzan history: when Russ Manning was handpicked by the Burroughs estate to return the strip to its creator’s original vision. Manning put together a dream team of assistants in this historic endeavor, including future comics greats Dave Stevens, William Stout, and Mike Royer, creating one of the most loaded rosters in comics history, and a perfect opportunity for new fans to discover the adventures of Viscount Greystoke.

In his introduction to Volume One, William Stout writes, “Russ Manning was a natural storyteller. He may also be one of the most underrated writers in comics. His beautiful art is so captivating that it’s easy to understand how it might overshadow his scripts. [Dave Stevens Covers & Stories Cover Image]San Diego, CA (Month 16, 2012) – This July, IDW Publishing will bring you the best of the best with Dave Stevens’  Covers & Stories, a collection of renowned comic artist Dave Stevens’ remarkable work. This volume will showcase all the non-Rocketeer covers by Stevens, many scanned from the original art. Additionally, there will be roughs accompanying many of the covers, offering a rare insight into the artist’s creative process. Besides covers, all of Stevens’s highly sought-after short stories will be printed, as well as some unfinished gems.

Although best known for his work on The Rocketeer, Stevens was also one of the most accomplished and skilled comic book artists in comics. His first professional comic work began with inking Russ Manning’s pencils for the Tarzan newspaper comic strip. Stevens later became the first to win Comic-Con International’s Russ Manning Most Promising Newcomer Award in 1982.

Dave Stevens: Covers & Stories will provide all of Stevens’s non-Rocketeer comic work, including incomplete and unpublished stories. These art works will be presented in an 8” x 12” hardcover book printed in classic black and white.

IDW to release second all-new anthology of Dave Stevens’ beloved character

Each extra-long issue—boasting 25 pages of story and art— will feature covers by Darwyn Cooke and Dave Stevens. The first issue’s line-up includes Peter David, Marc Guggenheim, Sandy Plunkett, Stan Sakai, and Bill Sienkiewicz, with Arthur Adams supplying a pin-up.

“The Rocketeer takes us back to another time,” said series editor Scott Dunbier, “one stuffed to the brim with heroism and thrilling adventures. Some might call these stories old-fashioned—and what’s wrong with that?”

Showcasing the company’s wide range of projects, six separate books and series received nominations.

“These many nominations covering the breadth of IDW’s diverse product line are so gratifying to see,” said Ted Adams, IDW co-founder and chief executive officer. “We strive hard every month to produce books that run the gamut of comic book fans’ interest, and it’s nice to see a spotlight shined on so many of these books.”

Recently the basis for a FOX Television pilot, IDW’s acclaimed series LOCKE & KEY tops the company’s nominations with four separate nods. THE OUTFIT coverTHE OUTFIT, the second installment of Darywn Cooke’s graphic novel adaptation series, Richard Stark’s Parker, is nominated for Best Writer/Artist (Darywn Cooke) and Best Lettering (Darywn Cooke). The first book in the series, THE HUNTER, won the Eisner for Best Adaptation from Another Work in 2010.

IDW’s archival imprint, the Library of American Comics, again dominates its category with three nominations. The inaugural volume of POLLY AND HER PALS COMPLETE SUNDAY COMICS received nods for both Best Archival Collection/Project-Strips and Best Publication Design. Top talent create new stories of Dave Steven’s classic character

Coming in 2011, IDW’s The Rocketeer mini-series will be written and drawn by some of today’s finest comics creators, including Mike Allred, Kurt Busiek, John Cassaday, Darwyn Cooke, Michael Golden, Gene Ha, Michael Kaluta, Garry Leach, Bruce Timm, Bill Willingham, and many more. Alex Ross will supply stunning covers on each issue.

The Rocketeer by Dave Stevens was first published in 1982, and appeared sporadically into the mid 1990s. Despite this infrequent publishing schedule, the series developed an intensely devoted fan-following that treasured each new installment. Tragically, Stevens passed away in 2008 after a lengthy battle with Leukemia. In remembrance of this brilliant artist, a substantial portion of profits earned from this new mini-series will be donated to Hairy Cell Leukemia research by the estate of Dave Stevens, the creators involved, and IDW Publishing.

“Dave Stevens was an incredibly talented artist and a wonderful person,” said IDW Special Projects Editor Scott Dunbier. “I would like to think that he would be happy with a book like this, one that pays such loving tribute to his greatest creation.”
