NYCC 2013: Cuddlers – A Zombie Tale with a Feline Twist Coming From ComixTribe

On the opening day of the 2013 New York Comic Con independent comic book publisher, ComixTribe, announced Cuddlers, the first of four new titles to be released in 2014 revealed at the convention.

Cuddlers, is a new series written by Yannick Morin and illustrated by Alex Cormack. When his hometown is struck by a mysterious disease that transforms its victims into cat-obsessed “cuddlers”, a young rebel teams up with a cast of unlikely allies to stop the plague before it spreads all over 1950s America. Combining what the Internet told us you already love – cats and zombies – this coming-of-age horror comedy will force you to laugh and scream throughout its three malodorous issues.

“Everyone thinks they have a new spin on the zombie genre. I usually laugh at them, and go back to reading Kirkman’s book ,” said ComixTribe publisher Tyler James. “But what Yannick and Alex are cooking up here actually is that brilliant, original twist, backed by crazy but true science… this book will knock readers for a loop.”

Where does an idea like this come from? According to Cuddlers writer, Yannick Morin, the answer is wasting time on the internet.

“One day, I was browsing the web instead of working on a column, and I came across this article about Toxoplasma gondii, a parasite that’s found in cat droppings and that makes rats unafraid of their natural enemy. It actually makes them seek out cats to get eaten by them, and thus perpetuate the parasite’s lifecycle in a new kitty digestive tract. When humans get infected however, they just get sick. That’s pretty boring really, so I thought: “Hey, why not have the humans go cat-crazy as well?”

“After collaborating on “Nearly Perfect” for the Oxymoron anthology, Yannick and I wanted to work together again on a new project,” said series artist Alex Cormack. “I thought another horror story would be great, but my wife suggested we do a romantic comedy. So Yannick and I decided to put the two together and throw in a bunch of cats.”

For long-time comic editor Morin, writing Cuddlers has been a significant undertaking. “Every time I sit down to work on this thing, I’m haunted by all of the criticism I’ve formulated about other people’s writing, either as an editor or simply as a reader. As I damn should be. We should all be held accountable of the feedback we give others. Cuddlers is a labor of love, yes, but it’s also me putting my money where my mouth is when it comes to storytelling,” he said of working on the series.

Cuddlers will be a three-issue mini-series, debuting in mid-2014.

Today, he is a celebrity with his own reality TV show. ComixTribe’s “Money Back Guarantee” on The Standard #3

ComixTribe has announced a money back guarantee on its latest release, The Standard #3, on sale in comic shops world-wide next Wednesday, July 10, 2013.  The critically acclaimed third issue of this superhero tale is the one that saw series creator and scribe John Lees take home the Best Writer award at the Scottish Independent Comic Awards.

Publisher Tyler James has said the issue is “the best super hero book” has has read in the past two years. And he’s putting his money where his mouth is.

As its publisher, that kind of talk doesn’t mean much. So, I’m going to put my money where my mouth is.  If you purchase The Standard #3 next week and don’t like it, I’ll refund your money, simple as that.

The third issue of The Standard sees Gilbert Graham, the world’s first superhero, come out of retirement to keep a promise that his murdered successor (and former sidekick) made to a grief stricken young mother — The Standard promised to find her missing daughter, and The Standard always keeps his word.

For the “money back guarantee” on The Standard #3, readers simply need to provide proof of purchase and a message via email saying they did not enjoy the book for a refund. They can send that to publisher Tyler James at tyler.james at comixtribe.com and they will be refunded their full purchase price. (Torrenters will also be refunded 100%…which is to say, nada.)

“This offer also stands for retailers.  If you stocked the book, and don’t think it’s a quality product, I’ll buy back your copies,” added James.

Having read the first three issues of the series already, I totally get why Tyler is putting his money where his mouth is. The first three issues have been solid.

Where’s the SCAM? Double-Sized Final Issue!

ComixTribe announced that its mini-series Scam, written and drawn by Joe Mulvey, will conclude this fall with a double-sized final issue. Scam was originally solicited as a five-issue mini-series, with issue #4 scheduled to release this month.  However, ComixTribe and Mulvey have decided to combine issues #4 and #5 into one giant-sized epic conclusion to the “Ocean’s 11” meets “X-men” style series.

ComixTribe publisher Tyler James said about the change (after several adult beverages):

Historically, the fourth issue of a five issue mini-series sells the worst. So, Joe and I decided, #$%! it, we won’t do a fourth issue. Despite the first three issues of Scam selling out at Diamond and getting re-ordered at the distributor level, we wanted better odds for a big Scam finale.

Despite the double-sized issue, the Scam finale will be a standard $3.99 cover price, as a thank you to fans and retailers for patiently waiting for these final two issues. The finale will feature two variant covers: one featuring a flip cover for Issues #4 and #5, and another featuring a stunning wrap-around cover by Mulvey.

ComixTribe has teased an announcement for the series planned for Boston Comic Con which is rescheduled for August 3-4.
