Review: Umbral #4

Umbral04-CoverThe team that created Umbral has provided us with a vast and wonderful world filled with atypical heroes and equally strange scary creatures lurking about. Each issue is filled with magnificent art and edge-of-your-seat storytelling. Also, who doesn’t love chase scenes? Last issue gave us plenty to worry about with Rascal and Dalone wondering what happened in the  Cave of Black Rojyr’s. The scene was that they were staring at was one of utter destruction that  could have only been caused by Umbral. The issue ended with Dalone saving Rascal and Shayim from the Umbral attack and Rascal attempting to spark the Oculus with blood from Shayim’s wound. At the end we see an Umbral shape-shift into Prince Arthir whom we saw die in front Rascal in issue #1.

Since this is going to be a very large story with lots of characters and lands I think it will be important to go over what we know so far before getting into issue #4 and beyond.

We are in a kingdom called Fendin with our main character being Rascal, a poor peasant girl with an attitude and a penchant for thievery and smuggling. Magic and religion are against the law but, of course, whenever you make a law there are people that want to break them. Their are creatures, called Umbral, that we don’t know much about other than the fact that they require a special “Mist” to survive and for power and can sense when it is near. Umbral also seek an object, that Rascal now possesses, called the Oculus which has belonged to the royal family for a long time. It’s exact purpose is still yet unknown. The Umbral have killed the King and Queen and their son, Prince Arthir, but the kingdom folk don’t know that since Umbral can shape-shift and have done so to resemble them. So far Rascal has escaped the city of Strakhelm with the help of a mysterious stranger named Dalone. We like Dalone and it’s fun to read the banter back and forth between him and Rascal. At this point before issue #4 we don’t know if Dalone is alive or not (we are hoping for alive of course) and Shayim and Rascal are surrounded by Umbral after they are discovered in Black Rojyr’s Cave. On to issue #4.

The issue begins right where the last one ended with Rascal and Shayim escaping the Umbral. Rascal touched the Oculus with blood and we learn something new; when that happens they get transported into the Umbrith, a kind of other dimension. I know, this is getting strange, but trust me, it’s a great story. They come across Fadreki’s Fang, Black Rojyr’s ship but have no idea how it’s there since he’s been dead for a very long time. My favorite part of this book are all the elements they add whenever it’s needed, not as a plot twist or some other device. The writer doesn’t need a cliffhanger everywhere to draw audiences. They need a ghost ship, they put a ghost ship in…on page 3! The art is fantastic, but more on that later. Rascal comes across Prince Arthir but we know it’s really an Umbral who shape-shifted, so let’s call him Umbral Arthir.

This probably is the only problem I have with the issue so far. Rascal knows Arthir is dead and she held his arm after it was detached from the rest of his body but she has no problem welcoming him during her escape. Rascal had no problem stabbing Shayim in the leg for suspecting her to be an Umbral but now she does nothing. After their meeting with Umbra Arthir we get to meet for the first time Black Rojyr, the pirate the caves are named after with his ghostly crew mates in tow. They help Rascal and Shayim escape and are friendly enough to fight off the Umbral to give them some time. So, I guess, Rascal finds out that Arthir is an Umbral after all. They get away, and with the advice of Black Rojyr, head for the Endless Ladders. It leads them to a hatch and they barricade it to stop Umbral Arthir from entering. They are welcomed by a man simply named Captain who helps them in finding Profoss Munty.

The B story this issue is the Thieves Guild and Master Gearge, whom we know to be an Umbral as well. What we don’t know is if all the other members, besides Rascal, know if he is an Umbral. They have employed the Kin of the Whispered Blade to seek out the Oculus and return it to them. We also learn that Umbral have families and can be killed but are very strong and resourceful.

Issue #4 is a great read. If you haven’t picked up this book yet I suggest you get the back issues or wait for the trade. If you enjoy stories like Game of Thrones or magic or scary creatures lurking in the shadows then this book has elements from all of them. This issue is definitely coming close to the end of its first arc so the action is thickening and we are learning more with each page turn (I just hope we find out the fate of Dalone before then). The art matches the style of Johnston’s writing perfectly. It’s gritty when needed and smooth and fast when Rascal is on the run. I really love when comics make it so I can’t wait for the next issue and this title delivers with magic and more. Definitely worth your time.

44Flood & IDW Publishing Introduce Libretto Volume 1: Vampirism

44Flood’s first project developed with IDW Publishing is Libretto, a 9×12” anthology presenting emerging and world-class artists as they explore a single theme using diverse mediums such as comics, oil painting, photography, sculpting and more.

The libretto refers to the part of an opera or a musical that is the words or lyrics, and is distinct from the music. 44Flood’s Libretto will be the “text” to the “music” that is a central theme, starting with Libretto Volume 1: Vampirism coming this April.

Libretto Volume 1 is curated/edited by Kasra Ghanbari and has the theme vampirism, being the misuse of power, as well as the objectification and exploitation of others. Featured contributors give their unique perspectives on this theme, with many sections including an interview of the contributor conducted by another artist.

This 200-page softcover will feature contributors that include Ben Templesmith, David Stoupakis, Riley Rossmo, Christopher Mitten, George Pratt, menton3, and many, many more.  Several of the artists also give a rare look at the techniques and processes they used to create pieces for the book.  This is your rare opportunity to explore the dark world of vampirism as seen in an artist’s mind.

Review: Manifest Destiny #1 and Umbral #1

Manifest Destiny #1

manifestdest01_coverIn 1804, Captain Meriwether Lewis and Second Lieutenant William Clark set out on an expedition to explore the uncharted American frontier. This is the story of what they discovered lurking in the wilds…

Skybound‘s newest series is a great weird history tale that just builds throughout the first issue in a story where you’re not quite sure how far it’ll go. Lewis and Clark’s journey could be worthy of a comic unto itself, but we’re getting a much stranger tale.

And that’s what’s really cool about this series. It’s very grounded to start off, only teasing us with what we can expect, and when that comes we the reader are left with as much a “what the hell is going on” as the explorers and their team.

There’s some great mystery here and with it also a hint of history. It’s a very cool mix overall. On top of all of that, there’s also the travelers themselves, made up with Lewis and Clark, but also some rather unsavory characters who already in the first issue are shaking things up. I chalk that up to writer Chris Dingess who paces the first issue perfectly. Add on top of his writing the art of Matthew Roberts, and you’ve got a great creative team.

Manifest Destiny is a comic I’ve been looking forward to since its been announced, and the first issue is a solid start to the series.

Umbral #1

umbral01_coverUmbral is a new dark fatnasy from the creators of the excellent series Wasteland, writer Antony Johnston and artist Christopher Mitten.

The young thief called Rascal witnesses the horrific murder of the royal family — now the world’s dark legends will be relived, and only Rascal even knows it’s happening!

The first issue drops us into a rich fantasy world with a deep mythology and history, and yes blood, but in this extra-long first issue, I came out of it scratching my head as to what exactly was going on.

There’s not tons thrown in here to work with, but what is, isn’t explained well enough for me to really enjoy the first issue. I walked away with too many questions to really enjoy it.

I have a feeling that when the first arc is done, the story will be great, as things are fleshed out and explained. But, a first issue is supposed to hook me, and this one left me with too many questions and not enough explanations.

Overall, this is a series for those who really dig fantasy series. I’ll stick with it and check out the second issue, but this first one didn’t quite do it for me.

Review: Criminal Macabre: The Eyes of Frankenstein #2

20131106-082613.jpgThose that already miss Halloween need not fret, Steve Niles and Christopher Mitten have preserved the comedic horror of the supernatural in their well drawn, well written four part series Criminal Macabre: The Eyes of Frankenstein. Plagued by two mysteries, L.A.’s shrinking ghoul population and his own respiratory illness, occult detective Cal McDonald is hoping for a small win by finding a new set of eyes for a recently rescued Frankenstein monster. He must begrudgingly visit Jason Hemlock, a wealthy surgeon and self-proclaimed supernatural expert, who might be able to solve both the ocular issue and that of the dying ghouls.

It is remarkable to see how Steve Niles can transition from his emotionally poignant Breath of Bones: A Tale of the Golem to the dry, bloody humor of Cal’s macabre world. Some comics, at times, can be consumed by jokes and witty dialogue (cough-Quantum and Woody-cough), but Niles expertly balances morbid banter with paranormal plot lines to keep the story moving. Though he has been oft compared to DC’s Constantine, it is fair to say that after more than two decades in print, Cal McDonald has solidified himself as an entirely unique and different character.

Christopher Mitten‘s illustrations, though supremely different from Ben Templesmith‘s work on Criminal, are unique in it of themselves. The scratchy lines and sunken eye sockets add to the moody atmosphere of an unknowing Los Angeles fraught with undead dilemmas. Although Mitten could still afford to add more panels of a cloudy L.A. skyline or seedy side streets to expand the reader’s view of the city.

This four book series is a great starting point for Niles’ long-running noir horror detective series and will leave readers wanting more of the pill-popping, degenerate protagonist. If Eyes of Frankenstein isn’t bloody enough, look no further than the Criminal Macabre/30 Days of Night crossover trade that came out in September. Either way, for those dreading the Thanksgiving gourds and Christmas commercials, the ghoulish haunts of Halloween don’t have to go anywhere.

Ancient Myths and Legends Prove True in Umbral

In Umbral, the young thief Rascal breaks into the royal palace using a rare eclipse as cover for the theft of a priceless gem. During the heist, Rascal witnesses the death of the King and Queen, the first step in the invasion of the world by the Umbral, mythical shadow creatures… and no one knows it’s happening.

A work that has been years in the making, writer Antony Johnston and artist Christopher Mitten unleash their latest series on the world in November.

Umbral is the latest collaboration between the creative team of Johnston and Mitten, who co-created the post-apocalyptic and impressively expansive series Wasteland.

Announced at the Image Expo earlier this year, Umbral #1 arrives in stores on November 13 and is currently available to pre-order from the September issue of Previews (Diamond Code SEP130478).
