Fireside Games is excited to announce a third product release for 2016. This summer they will release Dastardly Dirigibles, a Steampunk airship building game! Professor Phineas Edmund Hornswoggle, famed airship builder, is retiring and you are an engineer competing to inherit the Hornswoggle factory!

This game features tarot-sized cards that are played in a constant action format where each time a part is added, ALL players MUST add the SAME part–which may replace an existing one. Build your airship from different parts of 9 beautiful suits, using Special cards to your advantage or to thwart your opponents. The round ends when the first airship is complete. But you score only the suit used most in your airship. The player with the highest score after 3 rounds wins!

Dastardly Dirigibles will be available in July and will retail for $19.95. It can accommodate 2-5 players, ages 8 and up, and plays in approximately one hour.

Dastardly Dirigibles joins Bears! and Here, Kitty, Kitty! as part of their line of fun, friendly competitive games under $25.

Unboxing: DC Comics Deck-Building: Crossover Expansion Pack 4: Watchmen

Cryptozoic‘s DC Comics Deck-Building game is one of our favorite deck-building games out there. With each release they slowly add new mechanics, as well as new characters, that always change up the game just enough to make it feel fresh, but never over the top to make it feel like something completely different.

The company’s latest Crossover Expansion features cards based on the classic graphic novel Watchmen.

We open up the pack and go over the cards, talking about the new mechanics, and what they might bring to the game.

DC Comics Deck-building Game Crossover Pack 4: Watchmen Out Now

DC Comics Deck-building Game Crossover Pack 4 Watchmen1986’s Watchmen is one of the most celebrated stories in the history of comics. And now that world is available as a new Crossover Pack for the DC Comics Deck-Building Game. This expanded Crossover pack includes Hidden Roles, Villainous Machinations, Challenge Cards, Mastermind Plots, plus new main deck cards and new oversized Super Hero cards.

This Watchmen set adds a new element to deck-building games: Hidden Roles! As in the original story, one of the members of the team has their own ideas on the best way to solve the world’s problems. The Villain must work towards his or her secret plot while not making it too obvious. “Loyal” players will strive to overcome various challenges, though the “Villain” of the story can disguise his or her intentions by helping with these challenges as well. Should the Mastermind Plot become hatched, the Loyal players will certainly have their work cut out for them…

It adds yet another way to enjoy the DC Comics Deck-Building Game with a new mechanic that you can choose when you’d like and with set you’d like.

You’ll need a base game to use it, and we’ll have our review soon.

Cards Against Humanity Highlights Unfair Working Conditions

social-3f4a4c57Cards Against Humanity is a game which folks either love or loathe. As a company, they wear their politics on their sleeve regularly talking about donating to charities or starting a scholarship fund to get women involved in STEM careers.

This year the card game is holding another holiday tie-in, this time sending eight gifts in honor of Hanukkah. The gifts have been a range of items including socks, some game cards, and in the sixth package a comic and items from their printer in China including photos and a letter regarding the two’s relationship.

The company included a long letter about the manufacturer saying as their printing has grown, so has the printer. But, what’s interesting is the company’s focus on the wages and working conditions, both of which are “excellent.” What they have done different though is give the workers something they don’t have, a paid vacation.

Below is the letter included with the package:

Like many of the physical products we buy, Cards Against Humanity and most of these gifts are made in China. This is something a lot of companies don’t like to draw attention to, and as a result Americans often don’t see the labor that goes into the things they buy. But we’ve always viewed the way our stuff is made as a part of who we are.

Our printer in China has grown with us from a small business to a huge operation, and it’s important to us to go above and beyond our obligation to the workers who make our game. While our factory provides excellent wages and working conditions, Chinese working conditions are generally more strict. This year, we used the money from one day of our holiday promotion to give our workers something very uncommon in China: a paid vacation.

The printer didn’t have any formal procedures for paid vacations, so we bought 100% of the factory’s capacity and paid them to produce nothing for a week, giving the people who make CAH an unexpected chance to visit family or do whatever they pleased.

This doesn’t undo the ways that all of us profit from unfair working conditions around the world, but it’s a step in the right direction. Enclosed you’ll find some thank-you notes and vacation photos from our factory staff.

Happy holidays!

Bravo to the CAH team, and think about this small act when making gift purchases this holiday season.

The Legion of Super-Heroes is out now for the DC Comics Deck-Building Game

DC Comics Deck-building Game Crossover Pack 3 Legion of Super-HeroesA legion of young guns from the DC Universe are ready for their time in the spotlight! Play as a founding member of the Legion of Super-Heroes: Lightining Lad, Saturn Girl, Cosmic Boy, and more in the DC Comics Deck-Building Game! Take on Super-Villains like Time Trapper, Emerald Empress, Persuader, and many others. Find interesting new Heroes, Villains, Equipment, Super Powers, and Locations in this set as well.

For those who have never played the DC Comics Deck-Building Game, you use a starting hand of cards to buy new cards… building your deck. You’re goal? Beating a group of DC super villains and in the end gaining more points than your opponent. The DC Comics Deck-Building Game Crossover Pack 3: Legion of Super-Heroes adds new mechanics to the game, and the crossover packs aren’t a game unto themselves. You’ll need the main DC Comics Deck-Building Game, Heroes Unite, Forever Evil, or Teen Titans to play. Each game comes with their own unique spin.

This set features an exciting new keyword sure to throw DC Deck-building Game players for a loop. A time loop, that is! The keyword is Time Travel, and almost every card in this set has it. A Time Travel card can be played while in the Line-Up or on the Super-Villain stack at the cost of discarding a card from hand. It will give you a bonus for the turn, but then you can’t buy or gain that card. Players will have interesting decisions to make each turn. If you use a Time Travel ability, it limits your purchase options, and it also means the next player will be able to use that Time Travel card as well. Now you need brains, skill, and timing to beat your foes!

You can get the expansion now.

Fantasy Flight Nabs Legends of the Five Rings from AEG

Fantasy Flight GamesWe didn’t see this one comic. Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG) and Fantasy Flight Games have come to a deal where Fantasy Flight will purchase Legend of the Five Rings from AEG.

L5R has been a popular game for two decades, and their events at Gen Con are always packed, so the deal is a bit of a shocker to me. Fantasy Flight has said it expects its first product for the relaunch will be for Gen Con 2017, and the game will be a Living Card Game (LCG) instead of a collectible card game (CCG).

AEG has cited their focus on other things beyond the CCG as a reason for the deal. Fantasy Flight does have a history with the property, and I’d expect to see it in more than just an LCG.

The current incarnation of the Legend of the Five Rings CCG will be complete with the release of the Evil Portents expansion from AEG. After that release, the game will go on hiatus until FFG relaunches it.

For players unfamiliar with the LCG model, a Living Card Game offers regular, non-randomized releases that include full playsets of every card. In its new form, Legend of the Five Rings will use this release format, rather than “blind” boosters that contain randomly assigned rare, uncommon, and common cards. Instead of spending their time chasing hard-to-find cards, the LCG distribution model allows players to focus on building decks by buying a single expansion that includes a full playset of every card in that expansion.

This will also see significant design changes in the newest version, including a new mechanical design.
