Dark Horse Promotes Jim Gibbons to Associate Editor!

Dark Horse is pleased to announce the promotion of Jim Gibbons to associate editor! Gibbons, perhaps the “comics industry’s youngest veteran,” came to the Dark Horse PR department in 2009, following a brief career in the comics media as a writer and associate editor for Wizard magazine and a contributor to Comic Book Resources. In 2011, he moved over to the Dark Horse Editorial department as an assistant editor.

In his time at Dark Horse, Gibbons has worked directly under Mike Richardson on the Eisner and Harvey Award–winning anthology Dark Horse Presents, and has also assisted on Brian Wood’s critically acclaimed, epic ongoing series The Massive and Guillermo del Toro’s The Strain.

In addition, Jim Gibbons has edited Francesco Francavilla’s bona-fide smash-hit series, The Black Beetle, as well as Tom Morello’s politically charged, postapocalyptic comics debut, Orchid, which wrapped up last week.

“Jim has quickly established himself as one of Dark Horse’s bright, up-and-coming editorial staffers,” said Dark Horse president Mike Richardson. “His hard work on Dark Horse Presents helped to win us the industry’s two major awards. I am certain that with the same level of dedication he has shown thus far, he and the books he works on will win many more for Dark Horse in the future. Congratulations, Jim.”

“Jim brings all the best qualities a creator can hope for from an editor: he pushes you to do your best work, kicks your butt when you are behind, and buys you a beer when you are done. I’m lucky to have him on my team,” said Francesco Francavilla, creator of The Black Beetle.

This news comes after the departure of associate editor Rachel Edidin, who is leaving Dark Horse after seven years in the Editorial department. Edidin helped shape the Dark Horse prose line with projects such as Ellen Datlow’s Lovecraft Unbound and Yahtzee Croshaw’s Mogworld, while also working on critically acclaimed comics series like Caitlín R. Kiernan’s Alabaster. Edidin plans to focus on work as a freelance editor.

Please join us in congratulating Jim Gibbons!

Who Are the Comic Book Fans on Facebook? – 2/2/13

I’m a day late with this post, but, the data was pulled at the usual time that I do it, so it really is month to month and not a month and one day extra. You can check out the previous month’s results here.

This information is gathered by looking at over 30 different “like” terms in Facebook. All data is for individuals whose location is the United States. To make this clear if someone says they like “comic books” they are included in this, if they say “Superman” then they are not. Just because someone likes a character doesn’t mean they are a fan of comics, same with movies. So, that’s over 30 terms of comic book terms, publishers, etc.

Facebook Comic Book Fan Population: Over 1,879,340 in the United States

That’s a decrease of almost 18,000 individuals from the previous month, negating the gains of that month. What segments grew gets interesting and we’ll talk more about that below.

Spanish speakers dropped negating the previous month’s fain of 3000 individuals, to 79,360 fans a decrease in the percentage to 4.22%, down 0.13%.

Gender and Age

From the previous month it’s primarily those aged 21 and under that have been lost. 22 and up relatively stayed the same or gained fans. Why the loss of the younger fans? I couldn’t say, but there’s a chance lack of big budget movies might be the cause. We’ll see what patterns hold this summer when movie season begins again.

Women also decreased more than men. They shed 10,000 fans compared to a little over 7000 men. The unknown population as shrank as it did the previous month too.

Who Are the Comic Book Fans on Facebook? – 1/1/13

It’s the first of the month (and first of the year!) and that means a new breakdown of who the comic fans on Facebook are. We’ll present the new info as well as compare it to the month before.

Facebook Comic Book Fan Population: Over 1,896,820 in the United States

That’s a gain of about 18,800 individuals from the previous month. What segments grew gets interesting and we’ll talk more about that below.

Spanish speakers continued to grow by a little over 3000, to 82,480 fans an increase in the percentage to 4.35%, up 0.13%.

Gender

Even though though the overall population grew, that growth wasn’t even and wasn’t seen throughout all ages. Men broke 60% and account for 60.12% of fans. Women dropped slightly to 39.77%. The “unknown” population also decreased.

facebook gender 1.1.13

Even though the population grew, it didn’t do so evenly. The under 21 population shrank compared to last month in both raw number and percentage.

The female population in the age breakdown is interesting. They’re still a majority under the age of 17 but made gains percentage wise in ages 18 to 29 and a few other age ranges.

age raw numbers 1.1.13facebook age 1.1.13Relationship Status

There’s just more of everything here. More people seem to be putting their relationship status, almost 20,000 more people.

Some went up and some went down. There’s some shifts in percentages and it’s all over the changes.

Gender Interest

Again, I wouldn’t take as to what this means. Some people list interest as to interest in relationships and others have other meanings.

DC Entertainment Announces Elevation of Key Executives

DC EntertainmentDC Entertainment announced today the promotion and expansion of duties for two of its key executives and a new reporting structure created to enhance and strengthen the company’s three imprints: DC Comics, Vertigo and Mad Magazine.

Bob Harras has been promoted to Senior Vice President – Editor-in-Chief, DC Comics, and will continue to oversee editorial for DC Comics. In over two years at the helm, Harras has helped guide DC Comics to unprecedented heights with the launch of DC’s The New 52 initiative and September’s ZERO MONTH event. The string of successes rolls on, as the Batman books continue to surprise and enthrall readers with the BATMAN: DEATH OF THE FAMILY crossover, Superman and his family of books encounter H’EL ON EARTH and the entire New 52 line heads toward the top-secret TRINITY WAR.

“Bob is a respected and talented editor, manager and leader with a keen eye for talent,” said DC Comics Co-Publisher Dan DiDio. “He’s been integral to making DC – The New 52 the amazing success it is today. 2013 is going to build upon 2012’s huge successes and we continue to be committed to providing fans with the best comics on the stands. In addition, Kanalz will continue to manage the company’s growing digital business seeking innovative and integrated publishing opportunities. Facebook Comic Book Fan Population: Over 1,878,020 in the United States

That’s a gain of about 8,000 individuals from the previous month. What segments grew gets interesting and we’ll talk more about that below.

Spanish speakers rose by a little over 100, to 79,260 fans a drop in the percentage to 4.22%, down 0.01%, not much of a shift.

Gender

Percentage wise, women and men were about the same, with men gaining a small percentage and women losing a small percentage. Not much of a huge shift compared to the previous month. Men account for 59.93% of the fans with women making up 39.95%.

facebook gender 12.1.12And below we can see exactly who gained and who didn’t from the previous month.  There was a loss of the population under the age of 21. Almost every other age breakdown gained from the previous month.

facebook age 12.1.12Again, like the previous month, women make up the majority of fans age 17 and under. This is due to the female Manga fans of that age range. This also shows that the previous month’s results weren’t a fluke. We again ask, does this show a gap in the major publishers attempts of gaining female fans?

facebook age graph 12.1.12Relationship Status

Has it been a rough month for comic fans when it comes to love? The number of engaged and in relationships have dropped, though married has increased. The “single” fans have also increased. Could folks be putting out a sign in hopes they don’t want to spend New Years alone?

facebook relationships 12.1.12facebook relationships graph 12.1.12Education

There’s not much change here. Most of the raw numbers have increased and the percentages have increased. It’s later into the school year, so not shocked to see this.

facebook education 12.1.12Gender Interest

More men are seeking men as well as women and more women are seeking women, while less women are seeking men. It’ll be interesting to see how this matches up with the relationship statuses going forward month to month.

Who Are the Comic Book Fans on Facebook? – 11/01/12

It’s been almost one year since I did the last update of the demographic breakdown of self-identified comic book fans on Facebook. One year and we’ve had some of the biggest comic book movies ever released, the first year of the DC New 52, and now Marvel NOW!. Beginning today a new monthly installment of this series begins. Expect it around the first day of each month and maybe there’ll be some special ones in between.

This information is gathered by look at over 30 different “like” terms in Facebook and all information is for individuals in the United States. To make this clear if someone says they like “comic books” they are included in this, if they say “Superman” then they are not. Just because someone likes a character doesn’t mean they are a fan of comics, same with movies. So, that’s over 30 terms of comic book terms, publishers, etc.

In that year, there’s been a hell of a shift, so lets begin!

Facebook Comic Book Fan Population: Over 1,870,760 in the United States

Since a year ago, that’s a loss of almost 800,000 individuals. But, interesting enough there’s now 79,140 Spanish speakers that are fans. That’s an increase of about 24,000 individuals even with a loss of overall population. That comes out to 4.23% of the total fans.

Gender

The gender gap has decreased. Men now account for 59.85%, down from 63.03%. Women are now 40.06% of the fan base, an increase from 36.5%. This continues the trend we saw one year ago when the female identified fan base was increasing.

But, things get crazier….

For the first time since I began tracking this, women are the majority in one of age breakdowns. Women account for 53.92% of the comic book fans for those age 17 and under. That caught me off guard, so it was run multiple times with the same result. I dug down further to figure out what accounts for this. When looking at just Manga fans (included in this demographics report), women 17 and under were 60.99% and men just 38.97%. When Manga is removed from the greater list of terms, the majority flipped. Men accounted for 59.61% of fans while women were 40.34%, just a little bit higher than the overall percent. Could this blip show a key to getting women interested in comic books? Is Manga the way to sell to women? This would indicate there just might be something there.

Looking at the general age trends, we see the expected dip in age when it comes to their percent of the fan base. Not much has changed over the year and this breakdown is pretty consistent.

Relationship Status

With the massive population drop there was little change in the relationship status of fans. Percentage wise married fans decreased and those in a relationship increased since one year ago.

Education

Education is something I’ve been tracking, but haven’t been including, now for the first time it’ll be added regularly to reports. When it comes to those identifying themselves in high school or in college, women outnumber men as far as percents of their population. However, when it comes to college graduates, men outnumber the women in both percent and raw count.

Gender Interest

The most controversial of information is included again. Gender interest is measured by people’s designation of “interested in.” Some take that as who they’re interest in dating, some think that might be friendship, some might see that as general networking. I wouldn’t read too much into this, though people interested in the same sex have increased percentage wise for both men and women.

Breaking: Disney to Buy Lucasfilm Updated with Info from the Investor Call and Dark Horse Reaction

Reports are coming in that Disney is acquiring Lucasfilm in a stock and cash transaction. The deal is reported to be worth $4.05 billion. Disney earlier in the year acquired Marvel for $4 billion.

“Lucasfilm reflects the extraordinary passion, vision, and storytelling of its founder, George Lucas,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company. “This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney’s unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value.”

“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” said George Lucas, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lucasfilm. “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney’s reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products.”

We can expect Star Wars: Episode 7 in 2015 according to the release. I now demand an Avengers/Star Wars crossover!

Here’s the press release directly from Disney.

Investor call: On the investor call it was mentioned that we should expect a new Star Wars in 2015 with new movies every few years. You can also expect expansion of Star Wars rides at amusement parks. The also feel like they own the super hero side of characters with Marvel and sci-fi fantasy market with Star Wars. They’re looking at this as great IP that’ll bring great consumer product in the future. This also drove the Marvel acquisition. They are looking to expand their boys demographic and that you can expect Star Wars content on Disney XD.

Dark Horse Comics reacts:

Dark Horse and LucasFilm have a strong partnership which spans over 20 years, and has produced multiple characters and story lines which are now part of the Star Wars lore. Star Wars will be with us for the near future. Obviously, this deal changes the landscape, so we’ll all have to see what it means for the future.

Wizard World, Inc. appoints John Macaluso to Chairman of the Board

The Wizard World, Inc. board of directors elected John Macaluso chairman of the board, effective October 10, 2012, succeeding Michael Mathews who is stepping down from the board to pursue his passion of early stage technology ventures.  Macaluso will continue to serve as the company’s Chief Executive Officer.

Mr. Macaluso has overseen Wizard World’s impressive growth in its pop culture Comic Cons in 2012, including enjoying its most highly-attended and successful events in Philadelphia, Chicago and Columbus, Ohio.  Macaluso has shifted the company away from the prior management’s singular focus of being the purveyors of the new next thing towards a more fan-centric and balanced approach of delivering a great experience for all constituents – the talent, the sponsors and the attendees.  With this shift in strategy and business practices, Wizard World is experiencing growth in all areas of its business, from attendance, to viewership of wizardworld.com, to sponsorship sales and activations, and merchandise sales.

This broader vision has also helped Wizard World create a number of “once in a lifetime experiences” for attendees, including meet and greets with first gathering of the Captains in all five iterations of the “Star Trek” franchise, as well as the first U.S. reunion of the cast of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”  Wizard World comic cons are now attracting the next generation of global film stars such as Marvel’s The Avengers headliners while continuing to secure industry legends like Stan Lee and William Shatner, and industry favorites like Will Wheaton, Eliza Dushku, Scott Bakula, Gillian Anderson and WWE® Superstar CM Punk®.

John Maatta, COO of the CW Network and a director of Wizard World, Inc. stated “As CEO, John has worked tirelessly to instill best practices in the company’s operations, and we look forward to having his leadership and vision at the board level.”

Studio 407 Appoints Jessi Reid as PR and Marketing Manager

Studio 407 has announced the addition of Jessi Reid as PR and Marketing Manager. Reid brings her considerable experience to the innovative comic publisher as they ready to launch new releases in the coming months.

“Jessi has a great understanding of the comic industry and knows exactly what it’s going to take Studio 407 to the next step in our evolution.  She has a lot of innovative ideas that I think will energize the Studio 407 team and our fans.”
Reid is no stranger to the Comics Industry, getting her start in 2009 as the right-hand woman for Danielle Corsetto, of Girls With Slingshots fame. Most recently a Top Cow alumni, she joined the production company in 2011 as the Social Media Intern and quickly grew within the company, taking over Marketing duties from former Publisher, Filip Sablik.
As Marketing Manager, Reid’s primary responsibility will be to oversee Studio 407’s marketing strategy.
“Working in the comic book industry has always been a dream of mine, and to be brought aboard by an indie publisher with a growing fanbase from all different walks of life is exciting!” Reid said. “I’m thrilled by this opportunity and look forward to helping increase Studio 407’s presence in the direct market, bookstores and beyond!”
