Atomic Robo Heads to the Web Starting Wednesday

Atomic Robo Ghost of Station X #1 CoverRight now it’s hip to bring webcomics to print, but starting this week Brian Clevinger and Scott Wegener‘s Atomic Robo is heading to the web. After seven years, the fantastic comic that doesn’t get enough love from folks is heading to being a full-time webcomic. You can find it starting this Wednesday 21 at Atomic-Robo.com.

The whole run, all nine volumes, will be online for free, and build to the tenth volume Atomic Robo and the Ring of Fire which should be released this Summer. That means not only will all future volumes be readable on the web, but also means thousands of pages of the existing material will be available for free too.

The entire first volume goes up on Wednesday, followed by a Monday/Wednesday/Friday update schedule. That’s full issues being put up three times a week.

Collected editions will remain in print and through digital services like comiXology. The material will be online first and then collected later for those who want it like that.

Reached for comment, Clevinger confirmed that the collected editions of Robo will remain in print and available through ComiXology: “New material will be free online first and collected into issues/trades through ComiXology for folks who wants ‘em like that. We’ll also print the new stuff as trades as, y’know, they get finished.”

The first volume, Atomic Robo and the Fightin’ Scientists of Tesladyne, will be available  this Wednesday.

First Ever Digital Convention Exclusive Featuring Atomic Robo

ComiXology, Red 5 Comics and Emerald City Comicon have teamed up to bring fans the first-ever digital convention exclusive — Atomic Robo: Along Came a Tyrantula. Every ECCC ’13 badge holder will find a redemption code on the back of their convention badge that entitles them to this digital only Atomic Robo comic. Attendees will be the first to experience this brand new Atomic Robo adventure, but those not attending will also get a chance. The digital comic book will go on sale on comiXology on March 6th.

This is a digital exclusive comic, that was from-scratch ground-up experiment with the boundaries of the digital comic reading experience. The comic relies heavily on comiXology’s Guided View technology. It’s fitting considering that Atomic Robo is an action scientist, fitting for this action, in many ways, digital comic.

The comic was created by Atomic Robo creators Brian Clevinger and Scott Wegener.

What’s cool is, since it’s digital, it’s an convention exclusive that there’s no worries in running out of.

ComiXology will be presenting at Emerald City Comicon ’13 at booth #2101 while Brian Clevinger and Scott Wegener will be at G-04.

Review – Atomic Robo: Ghost of Station X #1

Bookmark and Share

Atomic Robo Ghost of Station X #1 CoverI’ve read some Atomic Robo comics here and there, but those were mostly Free Comic Book Day ones or if the character had some pages in an anthology.  So, Atomic Robo: Ghost of Station X #1 is the first time I’ve really begun to read a series with the character from the beginning and I must say, I’ve been missing a great character and comic.

I’d describe this as pulp entertainment for kids.  It reminds me a lot of earlier comics where the good guy takes part in an over the top adventure with crazy creatures or strange worlds.  It’s fun that’s to be enjoyed and not really thought through.

There are two kinds of people. Those who love Atomic Robo and those who haven’t read it yet. What’s that? You don’t want to start on the sixth volume? Well, GOOD NEWS! Every volume is stand alone. BOOM. You can start with this one and know what’s going on from page one. KA-BOOM. Then go back and read the other volumes in any order. THWACKA-BOOM. Oh, a plot? Okay, fine. Astronauts are stranded in a deteriorating orbit, and it’s up to Atomic Robo to save them in a race against the laws of physics!

Robo has to head to space and save astronauts and most of the issue is focused on getting him there.  We don’t know what the cause of the issue is, or what the “bad guy” will be, but there’s a problem and the issue is the thought process of a team thinking about how to solve the issue of getting Robo to space.  There’s a mix of action and humor about it and the pacing kept me engaged.

The comic was a lot of fun to read and the solution they come up with is over the top and just fits the campy pulp feel of a comic.  This first issue is easily a comic that can be enjoyed by both adults and kids, and it feels great to say that.  I can’t wait for next month and some more Robo action and definitely need to go back and see what I’ve been missing.
