Hunters, a New Comic Anthology from Lion Forge

Lion Forge Comics builds on its promise of “Comics for Everyone” with the announcement of Hunters, an all-new fantasy epic told through a diverse cast of today’s top creative talent!

Famed warrior Azarias has gathered a small army of varied adventurers on a quest to gather the dust of a distant island god in order to save the life of their king. Along the way, they encounter numerous beasts and monsters, all in the process of gathering artifacts necessary to locate the island god before ultimately defeating it. Throughout the course of the adventure, the band disperses into small groups with individual objectives in order to cover more ground in shorter order. These individual side-story adventures reveal more about each of the many unique and intriguing characters and their different interactions in different combinations.

This very intricate and original fantasy universe is filled with a large cast of intriguing, complex, and diverse warriors deserving stories of their own, building to the ultimate encounter. While the primary storyline is told by series co-director Josh Tierney and illustrated by Miguel Valderrama, the individual short tales are told by a variety of their celebrated comic-industry peers in different visual styles.

Co-created by Paul Maybury and Josh Tierney, this epic anthology taps Miguel Valderrama, Carlos Valderrama, Afu Chan, Devin Kraft, Niami, Meg Gandy, Jared Morgan, Irene Koh, Kyla Vanderklugt, Benjamin Marra, Alexis Ziritt, Travel Foreman, Carlos Carrasco, Vlad Gusev, and Ramon Sierra for an epic high fantasy tale.

Hunters is published in partnership with Buño Books and is slated for release in June.

Review: Night Business

There is something so satisfying about watching a revenge movie. Watching a protagonist, who has been wronged, taking justice in their own hands. This is the wish fulfillment of the everyman and why everybody cheers when the main character finally fulfills their measure of vengeance. This is why the audience for these movies still exist, which is why the trailer for upcoming Bruce Willis remake of Death Wish, has movie fans anticipating its release.

Throughout the years, there have been some really good revenge movies including the aforementioned Charles Bronson classic. One of the few revenge movies, that I have only watched once, as it is one of those films, you cannot un-see but still is excellent, is Pedro Almodovar’s brutal The Skin I Live In, as it still gives me the creeps thinking about that twist. My favorite all-time favorite revenge film, is John Woo’s The Killer, which had Chow Yun Fat, who plays a police officer who wages a one-man war against the Triad after they kill his partner. This same vein of revenge, retribution and get back, fills the pages of Benjamin Marra’s ultraviolent Night Business.

In the opening pages, we meet Jazzie, a young stripper, who is loved by everyone she meets, until a masked man, stabs her to death. The reader soon finds out he is a serial killer and the only person who can stop him, is Johnny Timothy, a friend of Jazzie and an entrepreneur, who seeks revenge, and wants to stop the killer before more dancers are murdered. We follow Johnny as he gets closer, but are constantly deterred by pimps, killers, a cult, and a gang but is helped by a mysterious bikini clad biker. By book’s end, what started out as a mission of vengeance becomes an opening of a bloody Pandora’s box.

Overall, a neon laced tale of sex, money and murder over a pulsating beat but doesn’t forsake a great story for nostalgia. The story by Marra is action packed, melodramatic and at times, cheesy, in the best way. The art by Marra reminds me of Michel Fiffe, but also has a glow all its own, and the way the art accompanies the story, it completes the experience as a fast 80s action movie. Altogether, an excellent revenge story that will have you looking for your VHS copy of Raw Deal.

The valiant Captain Victory falls in battle… but death is only the beginning! His superiors long ago enacted a contingency plan: maintain clone bodies, that — with a memory download — can be sent into space to die again and again. Only this time, two copies were created, their memory downloads incomplete and bodies ejected into far-flung time and space. Can a teenage, amnesiac Victory survive the dangers of 1970s New York City? Can a scarred, hulking Victory survive a hazardous alien landscape millions of light-years away? Born from the fertile imagination of comic book legend Jack Kirby, Captain Victory bounds into cosmic adventure anew courtesy of writer Joe Casey (Sex, Uncanny X-Men) and artist Nathan Fox (Blue Estate, Haunt)!

This boldly experimental volume collects the complete six issues of Casey’s critically acclaimed, star-studded reimagining, plus sixteen pages of never-before-seen bonus material and an all-new introduction by the writer, Joe Casey.

Review: Terror Assaulter: O.M.W.O.T.

Terror Assaulter CoverCartoonist Benjamin Marra brilliantly satirizes America’s obsession with justice — and disinterest in consequences — via a highly stylized, hyper- masculine style that gushes with violence, sex, and international intrigue, battering down the boundaries between psychedelia, political commentary, and aggressive expressionism. Terror Assaulter must defeat Terror at all costs, as long as it leaves time for steamy dates with hot chicks. The man’s codename is O.M.W.O.T. (One Man War On Terror) and he is the world’s greatest protector, and a villain’s worst nightmare. This is a hilarious satire of American foreign policy over the last decade, neocon philosophy, the state of American masculinity and sexuality, and male power fantasy in escapist entertainment.

Terror Assaulter: O.M.W.O.T. is a fascinating graphic novel that skewers the hyper masculine including action films, and violence in general. I’ll admit that while reading it, there’s a lot of moments where I stopped and wondered what the hell was going on and what I was reading.

The comic is over the top, and reads like a very stilted episode of Archer with statements that at times are obvious, but also hilarious in how blunt they are.

Terror Assaulter takes on its subject in a full frontal assault, not just the idea of justice through action, but also the masculinity that surrounds it. There’s sex scenes that are about as dry and unsexy as you get, which makes them all the more funny in their lampooning their subject matter.

The graphic novel is fascinating and definitely not for everyone, but spoofs its topics very well, leaving little on the table in how it goes about it. This is all out action for those you like to think as well.
