Disney Reveals Big Hero 6 Licensed Items and Toys

Disney today revealed toys you can expect for Walt Disney Animation Studios‘ new action-packed comedy-adventure Big Hero 6. The movie debuts this November and is one of our most anticipated movies of the fall. How can you not smile after seeing every trailer, clip, and ad?

The story follows robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who learns to harness his genius thanks to his brilliant brother Tadashi and their like-minded friends: adrenaline junkie Go Go Tamago, neatnik Wasabi, chemistry whiz Honey Lemon and fanboy Fred. When a devastating turn of events catapults them into the midst of a dangerous plot unfolding in the streets of San Fransokyo, Hiro turns to his closest companion – a robot named Baymax – and transforms the group into a band of high-tech heroes determined to solve the mystery.

Bandai has created a new toy line that extends the key themes of heroism, courage, friendship and bravery in Big Hero 6 that features action figures (such as the Deluxe Flying Baymax and Armour-Up Baymax) and plush toys. The line also allows kids to become their favorite Big Hero 6 characters through role-play toys including the Baymax Rocket Fist and masks. You can see images of all of that below.

Additionally, Disney has collaborated with several other licensees for a range of new products including: a home range with story featuring bottles, lunch boxes, bowls, plates and cups; peel and stick wall decorations by Roommates; wall coverings by York and Big Hero 6 panel designs through Character World Ltd; Baymax kites, pouches, notebooks, kid and adult t-shirts, and canvas backpacks from WDSMP Premiums; apparel and accessories; and a Pocket Money range including Big Hero 6 watches, caps and sunglasses from Imagin 8.

The movie is inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, though deviates from the comics of the past. The movie is directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams, and produced by Roy Conli.

We’re predicting this movie is going to go huge, and these items to fly off shelves. Check out some of the images of what you can expect below!

Preview: Toy News Round-Up

Wow, lots of stuff popped up lately. Had some things going on in life and I got a little behind. Hell of a week for that to happen. So here’s the round-up.

vaderhotwheel

Mattel showed off the first ever Star Wars themed Hot Wheels vehicle. This toy will be at SDCC in July. The roadster is designed to look like Darth Vader and comes packaged inside his own lightsaber. The package features red glowing lights, lightsaber sounds and Vader’s trademark heavy breathing.

NECA reveals the next 18″ Jager from Pacific Rim…….Battle-Damaged Gipsy Danger. Gipsy comes ready for battle with the famous Plasma Cannon that lights up AND swivels. The LED lights in the chest and head from the original version make a return. This behemoth is ready to defend the world this September for about $100.

vadersh

Bandai has taken the wraps off a great new addition to the S.H. Figuarts series……….Star Wars! The first figures out of the gate in 2015 look to be a Stormtrooper and Dath Vader himself. It’s pretty apparent, from my other posts, just how much I love the S.H Figuarts line, and getting Star Wars figures now makes me extremely happy. I can’t wait for a side-by-side review with the Black Series Stormtrooper and Vader. Based on these early pictures, I’ve got a feeling who the winner will be, do you?

zero

In more S.H. Figuarts news, Bandai gives a first look at the Mega Man Zero star, Zero. Loaded with weapons from the series, Zero comes with; Z-Saber, the laser pistol Buster Shot, and the Triple Rod. Zero also gets a shield accessory and the traditional interchangeable expressions and hands. Zero hits in November for around $50.

magnus

At the Tokyo Toy Show, Takara displayed the first painted version of the latest Masterpiece Transformer, Ultra Magnus. The quality of the figure looks great, as does the scale. He does look a little bulky at the shoulders and legs. More looks are needed at this figure before judgment is passed. But wow, Ultra Magnus!

To close things off, an entry into the WTF?!?! category.

archer

Factory Entertainment announced this piece for SDCC: Archer – Sterling Archer Tuxedo Action Figure. No words, I have no words. This is a variant of the regular Archer figure that will be released and it looks like THIS?!?! Were they going for a retro style here or trying to mimic the look of the show? Either way, they appear to have missed the mark. I was worried about these when they debuted, but they were early, and I assumed they would improve, they have not. This is a big dissapointment to Archer fans who were looking forward to great figures from a great show. Thankfully, there’s only 1500 of these and if you want to toss away $25 they’ll be available at SDCC in July.

Preview – S.H. MonsterArts & TV Pop!

With Godzilla fever still running high, Bandai has few more little treats for fans.

First is the S.H. MonsterArts Godzilla (2014). In what is easily the best figure from the new movie, this bad boy comes loaded with articulation and an incredible sculpt that looks like the monster stepped right off screen. Godzilla will be available this fall for around $70. NECA’s 12″ Godzilla is arriving soon and with a similar price point, I am REALLY torn as to which one to get. I have huge love for the Bandai S.H. figures and this would take up considerbley less shelf space. Decisions, decisions. It’s a nice problem to have though.

Next is a classic character from Godzilla lore, Bandai brings us the S.H. MonsterArts Kiryu – Heavy Arms Type. There’s been a few Kiryu or MechGodzilla figures released, but this new version has some added features. The figure includes interchangeable parts to re-create either “High Mobility Type” or “Heavy Arms Type“, an originally crafted back unit, right hand unit and repaired head piece. He also features the flip down chest piece to reveal the Absolute Zero Cannon. This one looks like the perfect version of Kiryu to face off with or aid the Millennium Godzilla figure. Look for Kiryu to land in Oct/No with a steep price point of $125.

Funko has released some shots of their latest series of POP! Televsion vinyl figures. Soon you’ll be able to add the cast of Breaking Bad to your collection. The series includes a few versions Walter White and Jesse Pinkman, Saul Goodman, Gus (with a spoilery version too), Hank, and Mike. I feel Gus was only sculpted that way so they could make the other “Two-Face” version. That pose on the normal one doesn’t look right to me. These adorable meth dealers, crime lords, lawyers, cops, and thugs will be available this summer.

Go Go Power Rangers!

It’s nostalgia time! With the news that there will be a reboot/sequel/prequel/whatever-quel of the Might Morphin’ Power Rangers hitting the big screen in the near future, I though it was a good opportunity to take a look at the best Power Rangers figures ever; the Ban Dai/Bluefin SH Figuarts line. Behold, The Green Ranger.

Gren-Pack-Front

The Green Ranger is packed in a solid box that features an oversized photo of the figure on the front. The reverse sees a few character action shots as well as the included weapons. I really like the use of actual photos of the figures instead of art shot on the packaging. It shows off how great the figure actually looks and the options when it comes to displaying it. Plus, it’s great to see the MMPR logo on the front!!!!!!!

Green-Combat

The articulation is what these figures from Ban Dai are all about. There’s over 20 points articulation on this and each of them is incredible. The standouts are the shoulder and hip joints. The almost double socketed nature of these joints allows them to “float” and achieve a wide variety of posing options. Add those to the double knee and elbow joints and you’ve got one hell of a possible figure. I spent over 45 minutes trying to get the figure into the final pose I wanted and while doing so, was able to create a few classic poses from the show. The vast amount of articulation really helps reproduce the abilities of the character represented.

Green-Morpher Green-Flute

The paint is FLAWLESS. That is all. OK, a little bit more. Flawless is the best way to describe that paint apps though. Every painted detail on this figure is damn near perfect. From the gem on the helmet down to the gold on the boots, each application of paint is where it should be and doesn’t wander off the mark. Despite the bulk of the figure being solid green (obviously) the details are where the figure shines. The teeth on the helmet are all perfectly aligned; the gold trim features absolutely no bleeding, the blacks and whites are all super bright, and the morpher is painted spot on perfect. The Green Rangers morpher could have easily been a sore spot on the figure. With such a tiny area to work in and with a detailed sculpt featuring multiple paint applications; this was a recipe for trouble. All these issues are moot point. The morpher is perfect. There’s another amazing example of paint application, but we’ll get to that a little bit later.

GreenSide-Back

Once more, damn near flawless. While there isn’t an overabundance of sculpting on this piece, what is there is excellent. The helmet is packed with the finest details of the whole figure.

Green-Close

The dragon like eyes, the teeth around the mouth/visor, and the character’s mouth piece are expertly sculpted. The gold details at the gloves, boots, and forearm, are all additional pieces that further separate this figure from the other Power Ranger figures. The biggest difference between this and his multi-coloured friends of course, is the armour. The linebacker style armour was always set Tommy apart and it’s re-created perfectly here. All the sculpted lines on the shoulders and the diamond chest piece all look help sell the “jumped out of the TV” look of this figure.

DSCF8360

Like other S.H Figuarts pieces, the Green Ranger comes packed with a few really nice accessories. A whopping 10 hands are included in this release!!!! That is amazing!!!! All those extra hands can be used in various combinations to re-create some cool martial art poses. You could even go back through the show and find poses to copy for your display. I was a little disappointed that this piece didn’t come packed with one of the great display stands that are included with the DBZ figures. Having the ability to have the Green Ranger delivering a flying kick or punch would have been a nice option. I used a spare stand from my DBZ Frieza figure to set-up the one shot here.

Green-Weapons

As mentioned earlier, the figure does come with a pair of accessories that excel in both sculpt and paint. I refer to the Dragon Dagger and the Sword of Darkness. The long curved blade of Sword of Darkness is very imposing. All the details in the handle and hilt are reproduced nicely and the gem at the top of handle adds a nice touch of colour (along with the tassel at the end). The solid plastic tassel, while good, would probably been better off as an actual fabric piece. Either cloth or rope would have gone that extra step in recreating the Sword of Darkness. The other iconic weapon, the Dragon Dagger, is perfect. The size of the dagger is spot on, not too big, not too small. The amount of detail on this weapon is staggering. All the finger holes and other musical aspects of the Dragon Flute part are here. The Dragon Coin in the center is accurate and almost looks like it’s painted a slightly brighter gold colour to help it pop. All the paint applications are impressive too. From the green highlights on the blade, to the gold inlays on the flat side, nothing is out of place. How so much accuracy in both sculpt and paint was achieved in such a small piece is a testament to skill of the sculptors.

Green-Summon

WE NEED DRAGONZORD POWER!

You can probably guess from the review my opinion on this figure…..it’s OK. HA, I’m just kidding. This is a spectacular figure. With a character accurate sculpt, great paint, tremendous articulation, and some of the coolest weapons ever, the Green Ranger is outstanding. The price tag of $45 is a little steep when compared to other figures in this scale, but compare that with what you’re getting, this figure is vastly superior. I would like to have seen an included base and perhaps a touch of shading on the paint, although that might have a negative impact with recreating the look of spandex. If you’re a Power Rangers fan, an martial arts figure fan, or a nostalgia collector, the Green Ranger would make a perfect addition. In the coming months the rest of the figures will be released to finish off the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers team. No word yet on if a box set of the original five will be made available. This is the main reason I haven’t grabbed the other Rangers yet. If I have the chance to get all five in one go (and at even a slight discount) I’ll take it.

Walt Disney Japan Announces Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers!

Marvel_Disk_Wars_The_AvengersWalt Disney Japan has announced that it will produce the first Japanese Marvel animated television series targeted at boys 6-12 years old. Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers will premiere nationwide on terrestrial television in spring 2014.

In an all out battle instigated by Loki, most of Earth’s super heroes and villains have been trapped inside disks—a new technology originally developed as portable security devices for capturing and securing villains around the world.

The Avengers team up with a group of teens to reclaim the scattered disk, and using their special abilities and techniques (waza), thwart Loki’s evil schemes to save the Earth from ultimate destruction.

Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers will be produced by Nerima-ku, Tokyo-based Toei Animation Co., Ltd., which has produced multiple successful animated series for kids in Japan. Taito-ku, Tokyo-based Bandai Co., Ltd., which has a highly successful track record with major titles, will be responsible for character merchandising. The three companies will collaborate in creating a fully localized Japanese series as well as providing a lineup of attractive products and merchandise targeting the boys market.

This series launch is a focus to deliver content specific to local tastes and sensibilities.

Previously Marvel in conjunction with Madhouse produced Marvel Anime which saw four series consisting of twelve episodes that featured Iron Man, Blade, the X-Men and Wolverine. That was aimed at a difference audience than this. There has been rumors of more of that series to come.
