Review – BOOM!’s Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake #1 and Hypernaturals #7

Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake #1

Fionna&Cake_01_preview_Page_01I’ve never read an Adventure Time comic before. But, having heard all of the praise, I was definitely intrigued to eventually get around and see what the hype was about. So, with the first issue of a new series hitting stands, I figured why not give it a chance?

This new mini-series sees Fionna rescuing a feral flame boy from a pack of wild fire lions, starting her on a quest she’ll never forget.

I found the comic pretty interesting. I’m not sure I’m the audience for Adventure Time, so definitely didn’t appreciate it enough as much as others. It was a fun read and it should be interesting to see where it all goes. What did surprise me was the beginning of the comic. It was actually a pretty sweet fairy tale and a full comic of just that, I’d be all over it.

I’m new to the whole Adventure Time thing and I realize I’m not necessarily the intended audience. With that in mind, I enjoyed the comic. The art was solid, the story had me smiling and laughing a few times, and when it was over, I wanted to see what else there was to the whole Adventure Time thing.

Hypernaturals #7

Hypernaturals_07_preview_Page_1It’s taken me a while to really get into Hypernaturals, the latest sci-fi adventure from the creative team of Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. There’s a lot I’ve like about it, part of which is it’s cool throwback feel to it. There’s something very “Kirby” about the whole series that I’ve enjoyed, but also at the same time have had issues with.

With this seventh issue, I think the series has really found it’s stride. It’s hit a pace in storytelling that’s getting it moving along into a solid sci-fi adventure and the quality I’d expect from those two creators. It seemed to have picked up in the last issue, and that positive movement continues here.

With their greatest enemy on the loose, the Hypernaturals are left with little choice but to pursue the only avenue of inquiry they have left, one that might save the Quantinuum, or plunge the universe into a greater, more terrifying darkness…

We now have a great idea as to what’s going on as far as the big mystery started in the first issue and we’re lead to believe what the cause is. Teamed up with their greatest enemy, you know there’s more twists, turns, and double crosses, to come.

Though it was a slow start, the series is finally getting to the point and quality I was expecting. If you’ve enjoyed these two’s past sci-fi epics, you better do yourself a favor and grab this series from the beginning. It’s well worth the build up.
