Final Boss #2 has its moments but shaky dialogue and inconsistent art add up

Final Fight #2

When mysterious supernatural powers awaken within him, underground fighter Tommy Brazen realizes his grandfather’s cryptic stories about their godlike abilities weren’t just folklore. As Tommy’s powers manifest in a brutal way, he’s forced to confront the truth of his new abilities and the violent destiny that comes with them. Final Boss #2 gets the story really rolling but inconsistent art and just bad dialogue diminishes the fun.

Written by Tyler Kirkham Final Fight #2 gets things going as Tommy goes from his underground fight to a the mysterious island his grandfather discovered and got his mysterious power that’s now Tommy’s. There’s something that generally works about it all in a B-movie sort of way. Kirkham has mined 90s video games with a dose of Mortal Kombat, Final Fight, and others. There’s a certain charm about it all. But, that charm loses its luster by dialogue that’s laughable at times.

It’s possible Kirkham has purposely done that for dialogue. Tommy talks about breaking his knuckles in a fight but his opponent is getting it much worse… as the opponents head explodes from the punch. It’s D-level cheese that lacks charm and laughably bad at times. Tommy at another moment talks about how his father ran away and they don’t know what his fate is but then soon after he states he doesn’t want to die like his father, a contradiction as to his father’s fate. It’s small things but they add up.

Those small things extend to the art. Kirkham handles the art along with David Miller. Color is provided by Ifansyah Noor and lettering by Zen. Here there’s inconsistency with some art looking absolutely fantastic and other moments, not up to Kirkham’s excellence. It’s possible that’s Miller’s work but it’s noticeable and kills the momentum for the comic. A visual moment involving rope defies physics and logic, again it’s the small stuff that distracts and boy does it. When Tommy arrives to the mysterious island we get glimpses of the inhabitants who aren’t exactly human. There’s talks of gods and demigods but without a more thorough explanation the background visuals turn from interesting to wtf quickly. But, when the art clicks, it really clicks. There’s a violence that’s just so over the top it tuns the comic comedic.

Final Boss #2 much like the first issue is turn your brain off entertainment. It’s not meant to be dissected, it’s one you just roll with. It’s a series that feels like it’s meant to be a bit of a throwback to the past when comics were more visual flash than logic but here the flash isn’t consistent enough to pull that off. You can see what Kirkham and the team is going for here and it has good DNA at its core but two issues in and it overall isn’t quite coming together.

EchoVerse Comics aims to create awareness and help children and families fighting Cystic Fibrosis

Nonprofit comic book publisher, EchoVerse Comics, is raising funds for Cystic Fibrosis (CF), featuring the Crowdfundr campaign, The Ballistic Boyz: And So It Begins, written by newcomer Dwayne Wallace II, with art by Caio Majado, colors Vinicius Townsend, and letters Zen.

Eric and Dan find themselves in a predicament neither expected themselves to be in as young 20-somethings.  They have been tasked with saving the world.  How can two people save the entire world? What are they even saving the world from? One, excited about his new lot in life…the other, rather unhappy about his new circumstances…are thrown into a super powered battle with a flying man that can probably blow them up. Even they didn’t expect to be signed up for this.  And who is this young lady and what does she have to do with their story?

What is Cystic Fibrosis? CF is a genetic disease that affects lungs. People who have cystic fibrosis have a faulty gene that prevents the body from removing fluid from cells, tissues, and glands  in the lungs, making it very difficult to breathe.

Seventy percent of funds raised will be used to obtain equipment and medicine, and to provide quality of life assistance to children with CF and families battling with the disease; the remaining will go towards creating awareness and CF awareness artwork.

The campaign ends The Ballistic Boyz: And So It Begins ends Friday, June 23.

Review: Fathom Vol. 8 #1

Fathom Vol. 8 #1

Fathom is a series I’ve always wanted to enjoy but it never quite clicks for me. Fathom Vol. 8 #1 is a perfect example of that as the issue attempts to be all things to all readers.

Written by Vince Hernandez, the issue is the latest volume in the long running series. Much has taken place and with a new volume you’d hope a clear explanation would be present for new readers. Hernandez attempts that, weaving in a lot of history from the previous seven volumes. The result is an issue that attempts to be new reader friendly but falls short with too many references to the past and not enough explanation.

The issue puts forth the key players of this latest volume and story and does its best to explain it all. But, when you need to have numerous editorial explanations of when things took place, there may be too much reliance on the past. Instead of clear explanations, it feels like the reader is expected to go back and read the references. It leaves one feeling left out when the issue should deliver enough to understand why what’s references is important.

Fathom Vol. 8 #1 does set things up well though. There’s more than enough intrigue and action that by the end of the issue, you may feel compelled to come back and see where things go. It ends with a nice cliffhanger that’s a bit traditional in a way but makes it clear as to what to expect next.

The at by Mauricio Camptella is nice. With colors by Peter Steigerwald, there’s a cool blending of the world of the blue and humans though at times it doesn’t feel like it goes far enough. The team is working off what has come before and for an underwater world, the design feels rather plain and basic, not taking advantage of the underwater beauty enough. There’s both a lack of detail and detail at the same time. What’s present is nice but there could be more of a blending of the inorganic and organic worlds.

Fathom Vol. 8 #1 is entertaining in a lot of ways and moves the narrative forward. Where it ends up delivers what’s likely a second issue that might be more new reader friendly. With some narrative changes, this could have been an explosive debut reinvigorating the series. As is, it attempts to please two camps of readers and in the end wind up making neither happy.
