Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

EastofWest16_CoverWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in! Below are ten suggestions of comics, graphic novels, or trade paperbacks you should spend some extra time checking out and think about picking up.

It’s the end of the year, which means there’s not much coming out this week, you can get everything for about $75. So, instead of our usual 10 picks, just get everything…. but if you still need some help…..

Dark Horse

The Massive Vol. 4: Sahara – Brian Wood’s series wrapped up, but you can catch some of the final issues here in this volume where all of the pieces of the puzzle come together.

X Vol. 4 Better Off Dead – X is back, and this violent ant-hero has been a welcome return. If you haven’t checked out what you’re missing, here’s a great way to see.

DC Comics

Batman Eternal #39 – DC’s weekly series will all lead to next year’s even Convergence… so, this’ll be important.

Earth 2: World’s End #13 – See above.

The New 52: Futures End #35 – See above.

IDW Publishing

Star Trek/Planet of the Apes #1 – Two classic properties team up! Can’t wait to see how…

Image Comics

East of West #16 – Are you reading this sci-fi western? You’re not? Yeah, you should fix that.

Image Firsts: Wytches #1 – This horror series from Scott Snyder is on a lot of “best of” lists. This reprint costs a dollar. That plus the fact there’s not much out means this is a “buy.”

Marvel

All-New Miracleman Annual #1 – A bunch of creators taken on the classic character in new stories.

S.H.I.E.L.D. #1 – With the second season of the television series in a fall hiatus, Marvel finally releases a comic that sort of ties into it.

BOOM! Studios

Abigail and the Snowman #1 – Roger Langridge’s cute new series.

Valiant

X-O Manowar #31 – Check out the kick-ass series of the displaced hero.

Picks of the Week: Bravest Warriors #8 and 9 Other Choices

Bravest-Warriors-8-cover-B-Nick-EdwardsThere are few comics that get me to laugh each and every issue. Bravest Warriors is one of those comics. This comic might look like it’s for kids, but the subversive humor is anything but. With moments that get me to say “holy shit” then laugh out loud (literally laugh out loud, people stare) the comic has it all in a crazy package. From the creator of Adventure Time, the series is the sci-fi cousin of that popular series. Featuring a team of adventurers to stories are bizarre and beyond entertaining.

Check out below for the rest of our picks!

  • Bravest Warriors #8 – see above
  • Avengers #11 – One of Marvel’s best, the series seems to be merging many corners of the Marvel Universe, like the New Universe. For die-hard fans only, the series is thick with continuity, but also a threat that’s “Avengers worthy”
  • Batman #20 – The last issue before Zero Year. Batman is still dealing with the loss of his son.
  • Chin Music #1 – A new Image series that looks to continue the streak of hits. Shaw is a man on the run and lost in time. Fleeing ancient enemies, Shaw finds himself in prohibition-era Chicago surrounded by gangers and demons alike and caught between law enforcement and the local supernatural underground. The comic is a tale of mysticism and violence like nothing you’ve experienced before.
  • Grimm #1 – Based on the popular television series. I’m expecting a possible hit from non-regular comic readers.
  • Star Wars #5 – Brian Wood has given us a new and interesting Star Wars story devoid of years of continuity and history.
  • Supurbia #7 – Super powers + soap opera = awesome!
  • Thor: God of Thunder #8 – Jason Aaron has been giving us an awesome Thor and the art is some of the best out there.
  • Uncanny Avengers #8 – The series started off slow, but has been getting better. The tension between mutants and humans is the main focus and something missing from most of Marvel NOW!
  • The Walking Dead #110 – Do I really need to push this one? The series is a cultural phenomenon and one of the few with crossover fans from outside comics. A true success in bringing in new readers from a new entertainment venue.
  • X #1 – The return of Dark Horse’s gritty anti-hero.

Top 10 Picks of the Week: Hawkeye #9 Tops the List

Hawkeye_9_CoverThis week is an interesting week of releases, dominated by Marvel comics, most other publishers have a fairly light week of comics. Even with that, it’s kind of hard to not go with Hawkeye #9 as the top comic for the week. Easily one of the best comics on the market, the art, writing, everything is top-notch fun.

I can’t stress enough how amazing this series is. Folks really need to check out a comic that’s universally praised. We all deserve comics of this quality, we need to make sure to support them when we do get them.

  • Hawkeye #9 – see above
  • Saga #12 – Another top-notch series focuses a bit more on the Robots and their role in the greater war. While the series shifts a bit in its focus, it gives us a key chapter that fleshes out the universe as a whole.
  • The Walking Dead #109 – Easily one of the best story arcs in a long time of the series continues.
  • Uncanny X-Men #4 – Bendis has made this squad of revolutionary X-Men sympathetic. All of that is wrapped up in amazing artwork.
  • Bravest Warriors #7 – The series might look like it’s for kids, but there’s some much wrong hilarity, I can’t recommend this series enough.
  • Mega Man #24 – This is it. The beginning of the Mega Man, Sonic crossover event!
  • Supurbia #6 – Super heroes meets soap operas is entertaining fun and a great read. Another series worth checking out.
  • Star Wars #4 – Brian Wood has given us an energized re-imagined original Star Wars free of the bogged down continuity.
  • X #0 – Dark Horse’s vigilante is back and boy is this first issue brutal.
  • G.I. Joe: Cobra Files #1 – The third new G.I. Joe series completes the package in IDW’s reboot of the beloved franchise.
