Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

InvisibleRepublic06_CoverWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Brett

Top Pick: Democracy GN (Bloomsbury) – Beginning in 490 BCE, this graphic novel shows the tortuous birth of democracy, is crammed with extraordinary characters and tells in incident and vivid detail how this greatest of civic inventions came about.

Invisible Republic #6 (Image Comics) – This comic featuring a reporter uncovering the truth of the rise and fall of a world leader and revolutionary is a fascinating comic that I can’t get enough of. Every issue is riveting.

Princeless: Be Yourself #4 (Action Lab Entertainment) – The end to the latest volume is here! This is a series that’s fun for both kids and adults, and should be on everyone’s read list.

Transformers: Windblade #7 (IDW Publishing) – Windblade and Starscream are competing to gain lost Transformer colonies as allies. The latest one might be more than either can handle.

We Are Robin #4 (DC Comics) – The last issue ended with a bang, and it looks like the first team member has been killed. The series is an interesting one, diverse, full of energy, I’m just not quite sure where it’s going, but I want to find out.

Elana

Top Pick: Over the Garden Wall #2 (BOOM! Studios) – One of the most visually arresting cartoons on TV apparently has a comic book and I didn’t even know! Join me in making up for lost time. This TV series was haunting and charming and funny and beautiful and since the book shares a creative team with the show it looks wonderful. A must for fans of Turn-of-the-last-century Americana.

Avatar: The Last Airbender. Smoke and Shadow TP Part 1 (Dark Horse) -Written by Eisner winner Gene Luen Yang, all of the Avatar comics have been wonderful addendum to the beloved TV series. I’m sure that all-ages-all-genders loveliness will continue in this new arc.

Fight Club 2 #5 (Dark Horse) – If you liked the movie or the book you’re probably already reading this. An incredibly well crafted book in story and art.

Grayson #12 (DC Comics) – “You’re here, I’m here. We’re surrounded by an excessive amount of skulls. The moment just seems right…” daaamn, Grayson was using all of my old pickup lines last issue. This series manages to be funny, suspenseful, fanservicey as hell but also surprisingly emotionally raw when it wants to be. In this issue Grayson is finally returning to Gotham. He’s going to be shaken (not stirred) and it’s going to be interesting.

Wolf #3 (Image Comics) – Urban fantasy/horror that actually feels fresh. Everything creator Ales Kot touches is both out-of-the-box and small (p) political.

Paul

Top Pick: X-Tinction Agenda #4 (Marvel) – The mutants of Utopia must band together with the mutants of Genosha in order to defeat a a common foe…a traitor from within!  This has been an enjoyable title, revisiting the island of Genosha and the struggle of its inhabitants to survive not only a virus slowly killing them, but also having their one time friends turn their backs on their plight.  Looking forward to see how this showdown ends.

Captain Marvel and the Carol Corps #4 (Marvel) – This title has been a surprise for me.  I really wasn’t expecting much, but I am loving the story of Captain Marvel and her squad questioning the world they live in and their “Lord Doom”; thoughts that could cost them their very lives; and now they have a team of Thors coming for them!  Really excited to see if they find the answers they’ve been looking for.

Runaways #4 (Marvel) – To be honest, I wasn’t thrilled with this title after issue #2 so I haven’t kept up with it; but then I saw the cover for #4 and I decided to get #3 as well and see what’s been happening.  I really liked the cast of characters and this team up, and the kids rebelling against all they’ve been taught to believe.  We’ll see if the latest issues have stepped up, so for that, I am looking forward to this.

Review: X-Tinction Agenda #2

X-TinctionThe island nation of Genosha is under quarantine, the mutant inhabitants dying from a virus that is running unchecked, with no cure found to help them.  Havok and Wolfsbane have reached out to their ‘friends’ in X-City, begging for help from their fellow mutants, but reluctant to break the quarantine and expose more mutant to the virus, X-City has turned it’s back on Genosha.  Havok has made the decision to storm the city and take the help they need.

This issue opens in X-City, where we see that Beast is still messing around with time travel.  Phoenix (Rachel Grey) and him are discussing the activities of three mutants, Thunderbird, Wolverine and Banshee; three mutants that Beast plucked from the time stream, just before their untimely deaths, to bring them to the present and give them a second chance at life.  Phoenix is not happy that Beast has done this, but, as usual, he explains that nothing could possibly go wrong having their friends and colleagues back.  Before they can further their discussion, explosions rock the city.  Havok and his team from Genosha have crashed the walls of X-City, seeking out Triage, a mutant with the ability to heal, and to Havok, the last ray of hope for the mutants of Genosha.  The battle is fast and fierce, pitting mutant against mutant, and showing that Havok is taking no chances in reaching his end goal (particularly great moments are shown with Mystique and Karma).  Triage is found and Havok pulls the team back to Genosha, taking former friends as prisoners along the way.  Tests are set up to ensure that Triage’s powers will work against the virus….and the sinister secret plan to rid the island nation of its disease is revealed.

Being a fan of pre Cassandra Nova Genosha from Earth 616 (‘our’ Marvel Universe), I have really enjoyed this tie in to Secret Wars.  It shows the X-Men doing what they have always done best; rising up against the people and situations that would see mutants persecuted and taken out completely.  What I like most about this book is the two different sides of this battle; X-City, where mutants live a happy, healthy life free of any turmoil; and Genosha, mutants dying by the hundreds of a disease that cannot be cured.  Mutants all, but one faction effectively turning their backs on their friends to ensure their self preservation.

Marc Guggenheim does a good job telling this story, and bringing across the desperation that we feel from Havok and the mutants of Genosha and Carmine Di Giandomenico’s art is really nice, especially the battle scenes, showing the ferocity between the two sides trying to defend what each are fighting for.

I for one am really looking forward to the next issue of this book; I want to see how X-City retaliates against Genosha and how the true ‘cure’ revealed at the end is going to impact the island nation of mutants.  Pick this one up folks; you won’t be disappointed.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

We Stand on GuardWednesdays are new comic book day!

Brett

We Stand on Guard #1 (Image Comics) – Brian K Vaughn is taking on giant robots and Canada. Sign me up. I’ve been awaiting this one since it was announced at Image Expo.

The Bunker #12 (Oni Press) – Josh Fialkov’s time travel comic has been amazing with each issue and the fact is, I have no idea what will happen. It’s just beyond amazing and one of my favorite comics.

Red Skull #1 (Marvel) – If there’s one character that can mess up Doom’s new world, I’m convinced it’s the Red Skull. Maybe we’ll get the first hints as to how Doom will fall here?

Secret Wars #4 (Marvel) – The first three issues were solid in the best Marvel event in quite some time. It’s interesting to see where it all goes, and I’m along for the ride.

The Wicked + The Divine #12 (Image Comics) – Did you read the last issue? That alone is the reason I’m looking for this one. I seriously have no idea what’s happening next.

Alex

Top Pick: Will Eisner’s The Spirit #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – I’m a sucker for anything set in the 40’s, and the Spirit is no exception. I’ve been looking forward to this ever since I heard the comic was being released. I even though the movie was pretty decent. Did I just lose my nerd-cred?

Detective Comics #42 (DC Comics) – I’ve always been a closet Harvey Bullock fan, so to have at least a two-part story focused exclusively on him? There is no way I couldn’t pick this up.

We Stand On Guard #1 (Image Comics)A military comic that features giant robots and is written by Brian K Vaughn? What’s not to love?

Elana

Top Pick (tie) The Wicked + The Divine #12 (Image Comics) – Ack! My heart! It’s been smashed somewhere on the floor! It’s listening to “People Who Died” and “Rock and Roll Suicide” on repeat.

But Don’t You Cry Tonight (Gillen/McKelvie still love you, baby). There’s an underworld bellow us (BAYBAAHH) and Persephone is the goddess who comes back from the dead every spring.

This month’s issue is a flashback to Inanna’s origins. So put on Purple Rain and pretend you don’t know what’s to come.

Top Pick (tie) The Humans #6 (Image Comics) – It’s been reported that this issue is going to start giving us some more material about the women in The Humans and Johnny’s long lost former girlfriend. I’ve always appreciated how even in this male-centered story all of the female characters are easily identifiable and unique. This issue could make good on that promise.

But that’s not what I read this comic for. That’s just my intellect talking. I read it because it’s in my guts. (Teaser of a thought piece I’m working on).

It’s safe to say this comic will continue to be some of the best crafted, most addictive, least office appropriate reading you’ll find.

A-Force #2 (Marvel) – All of everyone’s favorite female heroes on one team! I was a bit thrown off by this new issues’s summary page. It describes Sister Grimm and Ms. America as foster sisters. Brett and I had interpreted them as a romantic couple. But let’s see where this goes. Hopefully there will be girl kissing and sharks being punched. And more She-Hulk.

Airboy #2 (Image Comics) – Hey Kids! Airboy is appearing in a comic of the same name! But I’m not reading this for a WWII Boy Adventurer. I’m here for the gonzo struggles of the artist as a middle aged man. (Read my review of issue 1 to find out more.) Will this comic’s writer and artist– this story’s actual protagonists– despoil the golden lad of the Golden Age? Pretty sure all of the hangovers we’re ever had, all put together are less interesting then the hangover that this creative team is about to experience (and they invite us along for the ride).

I want to warn our readers that there is seriously transphobic content in issue 2. I did not have a review copy when I put this issue on my picks list and wrote my endorsement based on my having enjoyed issue 1. Now, having read this issue I am not endorsing it.  We will be discussing the problems with it soon. I’m really disappointed.

For more on this, you can read our post “Airboy Crashes and Burns With Transphobic Second Issue

Years of Future Past #2 (Marvel) – This Secret Wars title seems to have gone entirely under the radar. That’s a shame. It’s a Claremonterrific spin-off of the classic X-Men Future Dystopia, the one that birthed all those crazy X-Men continuities. The book’s got heavy handed but emotionally resonant political metaphor to spare. It also has Kitty Pryde married to Colossus (though he’s only the 2nd best member of the Rasputin family for her to be in love with) and they have a daughter! And she meets Logan’s mysterious son “Cameron”. Ooooo. Who’s he named for?

Mr. H

Top Pick: Secret Wars #4 (Marvel Comics) – Sheriff Strange, Lord Doom. Marvel’s version of Game of Thrones continues and it’s been epic! Unlike Convergence, part of me doesn’t want to see it end. If only Doom can win…

Action Comics #42 (DC Comics) – Truth continues and we see the “Man” without the “Steel” try to adapt and overcome everything put in his path. Last month was a joy and I’m waiting to see where this month takes us. Hopefully up, up and further!

Barb Wire #1 (Dark Horse Comics) The return of the bounty hunting Babe! Adam Hughes cover alone sold me on this one. If the inside is as good as the cover, I won’t need to keep the receipt.

Green Lantern #42 (DC Comics) – Everyone’s favorite renegade: Han.. er.. Hal Jordan continues his outlaw journey through the cosmos without the Corps by his side. Doesn’t mean it won’t be any less action packed!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #47 (IDW Publishing) – Evil Baxter Stockman, a horde of Mousers and half- shelled heroes. Is it 1984 again? That’s well and ok with me! Me thinks it’s Cowabunga time again!

Paul

Top Pick: A-Force #2 (Marvel) – All the women from the Marvel Universe on an island, fighting and protecting their island from outside threats…led by She-Hulk? YES PLEASE!  This is one of the few Secret Wars tie ins that I have really enjoyed, AND it has been reported this title will survive as an on-going title with the MU figures itself out.  I highly recommend getting on board with this one.

X-Tinction Agenda #2 (Marvel) – The second Secret Wars tie-in I really enjoyed, this title sees Havok and the mutants of Genosha dying from a virus running rampant, and their only hope is charging into X-City against Phoenix and taking the help they need to save their people.  Definitely a show down I look forward to seeing.

Years of Future Past #2 (Marvel) – Kate Pryde, along with her parents Shawdowcat and Colossus, have broken free from their prison, and with a handful of fellow mutants, have to race through their ruined city to try and save their surviving friends.  I’ve always enjoyed stories showing a bleaker future, and how the X-Men, no matter their numbers, band together to try and set things right.

Mutants Battle Mutants in the Warzones! of X-Tinction Agenda #1

This June, return to the fight against the corrupt, mutant-exploiting government as a classic X-Crossover is reborn in the Warzones! in X-Tinction Agenda #1! Writer Marc Guggenheim and artist Carmine Di Giandomenico return to the shores of Genosha and to one of the most beloved X-Men crossovers of all time!

It has been ten years since the fall of Cameron Hodge and his fascist regime. Ten years that Havok and Wolfsbane have toiled and labored to rebuild Genosha into the proud mutant homeland it once was. But a decade removed from Hodge and his iron rule, their work may all be for naught. A plague has spread across the nation, infecting mutants and threatening their race with extinction. With all of Genosha quarantined and all but abandoned by the rest of the world, including the X-Men, old friends may become new enemies!

In an interview with Marvel.com, Guggenheim said:

A virus is decimating the mutant and mutate population. The X-Men have a cure in the form of Triage, but won’t violate the quarantine that Genosha is under, not wanting to risk extinction should the virus spread. Havok and Wolfsbane take it upon themselves to go and get Triage and bring him back to Genosha, by force if necessary.

Ask yourself – what lengths would you go to save your people? Havok and Wolfsbane will stop at nothing to save the people of Genosha – but have they doomed Earth in the process? Find out as the landmark X-Crossover of the 90’s makes it to Battleworld!
