“Armageddon” is the upcoming event building off a lot of different storylines in various comic series and characters including Captain America, Wolverine, and the boxes from the Ultimate Universe. While we know it’s coming with some teaser images, Marvel has released the latest teaser below with a promise of more information tomorrow.

We know a major event is coming with Marvel’s “Armageddon” and it involves the boxes that give superpowers from the current Ultimate Universe. While there’s been some teases in the Ultimate comics as well as Captain America, it feels like Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon #1 is the real start of the storyline with a main focus on what’s coming.
Written by Chip Zdarsky, who also writes Captain America, Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon #1 focuses on Wolverine as he’s pulled into a mystery involving kidnapped mutants and a new Weapon X program. With teases as to who’s behind it, how they’re doing it, and some of the victims of it, the issue bounces back and forth between the present and Wolverine’s tortured past.
Zdarsky keeps things moving with not so much an amping up of the action, but what feels like a quick run as far as storytelling and action. Once this gets going, it’s an issue that doesn’t really slow down by much and instead keeps things moving as Wolverine attempts to hunt down a mutant captured and presumed tortured by the new program. The issue is a solid setup dipping into the past of Wolverine but also putting Zdarsky’s recent Captain America run in the spotlight by the end of the issue.
The art by Luca Maresca is solid with color by Jesus Aburtov and lettering by Joe Sabino. It’s not a flashy comic with tons of action and fights, but it’s just really well done with a look that has a slight grit to it. What’s nice is there are a lot of small details to help build on the story and that’s made clear towards the beginning where it’s pointed out Logan has glass on his cheek. It’s a heads up that this is a comic whose visuals will provide clues. But, the look, everything about it, is just really well done and solid where I’d like to see this team regularly take on Wolverine.
Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon #1 is a nice debut issue but also a nice build up to whatever event is coming. It makes it easy for new readers to hop in but also builds on a lot that was been coming out in recent months in other Marvel comics. As far as prequels and teasers, this is a nice on that has me excited to see what comes next and to go back and see what I might have missed elsewhere.
