Review: Vampirella/Army of Darkness #1

VampiAOD01-Cov-A-SeeleyTwo iconic legends of the horror genre (Ash from Army of Darkness and Vampirella)  are now facing off in one of the coolest titles coming out this summer from Dynamite publications; Vampirella/Army of Darkness. This story takes place in an almost retcon like universe of The Army of Darkness movie (if you haven’t seen it, shame on you!). Where our reader is introduced to Ash, after he has won the battle against the book of the dead. However, in the retcon like twist Ash is finding himself being put to the test against another great evil the medieval age has to offer; The Unholy Vampire!

Now I don’t want to give too much away because as a horror fan, I really dug this first issue. It was completely written for fans of both Army of Darkness and Vampirella by Mark Rahner. Rahner has written stories for both these characters before in there own separate titles. So, it only makes sense that Dynamite would choose him to write for this title. And what a way to kick it off too. Rahner has definitely set it up for these two horror hero icons to take the genre further in this book. Rahner definitely knows all of Ash’s and Vampirella’s mannerisms and ticks to such a degree, that fans keep coming back to both icon’s respective titles whenever Mark Rahner is writing for them. So I’d say were in for fun ride with this title folks.

The only downside of this book that kind of irked me was the pacing. Some of the pages didn’t flow like a Rahner story normally would when dealing with these two characters. However, it wasn’t so bad that it would kill it for the reader.  Like I said before, it is a good read and a great way to open up this particular story. Just be warned some of the pages will leave you feeling like it was, at times a little rushed to get to the payoff.

Whats a cool plus for this book is the cover done by Tim Seely that plays some quick wit humor with Ash looking like he is wanting to flirt with Vampirella as she is shopping at S-Mart. Which, when looking at both characters is a great cover idea. It allows the reader to get a sense of the dark humor that they will soon read without giving too much away and it pays homage to the some of the best things about both characters (Vampirella the dark seductive vampire hero and Ash the minimum wage store clerk turned horror/action hero).

So in all what do I rate Vampirella/Army of Darkness?

Review: Vampirella/Army of Darkness #1

VampiAOD01-Cov-A-SeeleyIn the different worlds of supernatural within comics in general, right now seems to be a great time for the genre, as it has enjoyed a resurgence of the last few years, as some properties have lend their talents to the TV screen, i.e. Walking Dead , iZombie, True Blood and the upcoming Lucifer. It is only to be expected that comics reach back into the movie and TV worlds, and want to explore what they have to offer as well.

The comics medium offers more to character development, as they can explore different story arcs without worrying about the costs of special effects and location scouting, as the only thing an artist would have to do is research and draw what he saw. So when I heard that Dynamite decided to mash-up their two most successful horror genre comics, I was excited to see the results.

Written by Mark Rahner and illustrated by Jeff Morales, the story centers on Ash from Evil Dead fame and everyone’s favorite vampire, Vampirella. The story opens with Ash falling though another time vortex, with his “boom stick” and chainsaw, landing in another period within medieval times, as the people of this land are facing a vampire threat, they have deemed Ash, the “chosen one”. As he is picked as their savior, he stays in the king’s castle, dining with knights, where majority of the first issue takes place and his interaction with them. The action switches when one of the knights is killed mysteriously, which sets up the reader for the other part of this mashup.

Rahner deftly captures Ash’s sarcastic sense of humor within these first few pages, while transporting the reader to a time and place that would be hilariously confused by him. Morales illustrations throughout, exemplifies why he is master at his art.

Overall, it is an intriguing beginning to a comic that sure looks like it will not disappoint.

Dynamite Entertainment has announced the July release of Vampirella/Army of Darkness #1, the first issue in a four-issue miniseries that sets Ash Williams, the hard-luck hero of the Army of Darkness franchise, against the classic horror hostess-turned-heroine Vampirella, for the first time in comic history. Written by Mark Rahner and featuring artwork by Jethro Morales, the first issue will be offered with multiple collectible covers by industry heavyweights Tim Seeley and Jae Lee, plus a “Cute” variant by Tony Fleecs exclusively available to subscription customers.

The events of Vampirella/Army of Darkness take place during Ash Williams’ time trapped in the England of 1300 A.D.
