Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Lucifer_Cv1_SDCC_559dae8a9dfde9.56453707Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Alex

Top Pick: Ivar, Timewalker #12 (Valiant) – This series has become one of my favourites with it’s mix of humour and intelligently handled time travel fueled story line that is both twisted and surprisingly easy to follow. With the current arc coming to a close this issue, I’m stoked to see just how the arc comes to a close.

The Goddamned #2 (Image Comics) – You know what? I love the idea behind this comic, and it’s re-imagining of a certain book has an edgy feel to it that I love. Violent and unapologetic, I can’t wait to see where Jason Aaron takes this.

Huck #2 (Image Comics) – The first issue was a great surprise filled with a childlike innocence. While I doubt that’ll continue, I am curious to see what direction Millar heads here.

Judge Dredd #1 (IDW Publishing) – A character that’s a staple for many Brits, I’m looking forward to see how this translates on this side of the pond.

Klaus #2 (BOOM! Studios) – Viking Santa as told by Grant Morrison with some stunning art by Dan Mora? Can’t. Get. Enough.

Brett

Top Pick: Lucifer #1 (Vertigo) – I’ve watched the television pilot for the 2016 television series, and I have no idea if this comic will be close in tone or plot. But, Vertigo has a solid history with the character and it’s one I’m eagerly awaiting to see what it’s like and about.

Descender #8 (Image Comics) – Jeff Lemire’s sci-fi tale isn’t just touching and exciting, but the art by Dustin Nguyen is beautiful to look at. Last issue had a hell of a revelation (though you could see it coming) that has me even more excited to see what’s next.

Superman: American Alien #2 (DC Comics) – The first issue of this miniseries was one of the best takes on Superman that I’ve read in a long time. I can’t wait to see what the second issue has in store for us.

Squadron Supreme #1 (Marvel) – The concept of a super power team from other worlds taking out threats through any means necessary is intriguing. This is the Avengers who have no issue killing. The concept sounds a bit like the Dark Avengers to me, and that’s ok since it was a concept that worked, and these character push should make an interesting eventually collision with the rest of the Marvel U.

Weirdworld #1 (Marvel) – I’ve already read the first issue and I’ll admit that this comic was initially low on my list. But, after reading that first issue, I can say this is one of the best debuts of All-New, All-Different Marvel and a solid read this week. Fantastic debut.

Elana

Top Pick: Phonogram: The Immaterial Girl #6 (Image Comics) – I couldn’t love a comic more. In Phonogram phonomancers use music to do magic, generally to transform themselves (which never ever backfires, oh no). A must read for anyone who is super particular about what they listen to. Here’s my treatise on why this comic is so brilliant.  and here’s my fan mix/review of issue 4.

Top Pick: The Wicked + The Divine #17 (Image Comics) – Finally: the Sekmet issue! We haven’t heard much from the Rihanna cat goddess stand in so I’m eager to hear what she has to say. The art is from Brandon Graham who’s anime and hip-hop influenced style is PURRREFECT (sorry) for this issue. Check out my review of issue 16.

Batgirl #46 (DC Comics) – Spoiler is back! Spoiler is back! Batgirl is teaming up with Spoiler!

Jem & The Holograms Holiday Special (IDW Publishing) – Sounds like fun mischief with The Misfits. Sophie Campbell’s exhuberant and wonderfully diverse art has been key to the series success but I am excited to get our first look at new artist Amy Mebberson. She’s done a lot of Disney but I hope she maintains the body diversity that has made this comic resonate with so many people.

The Mighty Thor #2 (Marvel)Issue 1 starred the arm seen round the (comics) world. Can’t wait to see what issue 2 has for Doctor Jane Foster who is Thor and is awesome.

Javier

Top Pick: Descender #8 (Image Comics) – Tim-21 and Tim-22 team up to join the Robot Resistance. Forget Star Wars, when is J.J. Abrams making a Descender movie. Just kidding, I love Star Wars too, but this is really good sci-fi storytelling. Asimov would approve, and so do I.

Cognetic #3 (Boom! Studios) – James Tynion IV’s and Eryk Donavan’s latest horror book concludes as the Apocalyptic Sister and Brother mind bending sibling rivalry comes to an end (for at least one of the two).

ExMortis #2 (451 Media) – Monsters unite to fight the first True Monster: Hitler. Good old fashioned WW II action with a Frankenstein versus Nazis twist; and a werewolf, too, thrown in for good measure.

Tokyo Ghost #4 (Image Comics) – Rick Remender’s dystopian, over-entertained future society, riddled with Japanese inspired memes, is depressing and entertaining at the same time. Plus Sean Murphy’s visuals pushes this one over the edge.

Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #2 (Valiant Entertainment) – The Eternal Warrior’s Dantean escape from Hell (or was it Paradise) begins. It’s written by Robert Venditti who never disappoints, with steel inspired blood splattering art by Raul Allen.

Review: Wrath Of The Eternal Warrior #2

WRATH_002_COVER-A_LAFUENTEAt the far end of existence…can even Earth’s immortal soldier withstand a foe as old as life itself?

Gilad Anni-Padda, the Eternal Warrior, has sacrificed everything to shape a better world…but his work is only beginning. Turning his back on everything and everyone he loved, he must leave the safety of the world he knew behind…and begin a trek across a savage and unexplored realm to return to Earth…if the true cost of his immortality doesn’t destroy him first.
As with the last review, let’s get one thing out of the way before we start the review proper: there will more than likely be spoilers for Valiant‘s Book Of Death event within this review, so if you still haven’t read that miniseries, A) Why not? B) This series is worth buying. The second chapter digs into Gilad‘s sense of self in a way that I’ve not seen before, and I’m really enjoying .

Alright, there may be Book Of Death and issue #1 spoilers from here on out.

Wrath Of The Eternal Warrior #2 is scripted by Robert Venditti, and unlike the first issue which felt like it was missing something, falling short of my admittedly sky high expectations, the second issue not only felt much more complete, but also gave me another appreciation for the first issue.

Venditti is joined again this issue by an extensive art team of artists Raul Allen & Patricia Martin, art assistant David Astruga with additional colours by Borja Pindado (I’m going to refer to them as The Artists or the Art Team from here on out for simplicity’s sake, and because I’m not entirely sure what their process was in creating the issue). Despite the angry sounding title, Wrath Of The Eternal Warrior #2 makes great use of a calm, gentle approach a the beginning of the comic. The minimalist use of text during those pages encourages you to focuses on the artwork (which is growing on me surprisingly quickly, but more on that later), and the layouts that hark back to a simpler style of comic book layouts that I really enjoyed. I’m wondering if, as the story progresses, the panel layouts will change at all.

The Artists have delivered some very interesting work with this issue, and despite the style not working fully for me last issue, I really can’t say the same here.  Despite the layout of the panels there is some brilliantly presented art here that I don’t think would work with a different layout. The use of colour in the second half of the book in the scenes where Gilad is the sole focus is also something I appreciated due in a large part to the simplicity of it’s use in emphasizing the wrath of the Eternal Warrior; I don’t mean to beat a dead horse with that word, but it’s honestly the most accurate term I can think of. The simplicity isn’t a bad thing here, indeed the lack of over explaining certain points is actually one of the strengths of the series so far, which in part is reflected in the detailed art.

Whether you’re interested in reading more about the Eternal Warrior, or you just want to read a good comic, this is a series that you should look out for.

With his resources spread thin and his time running out, Toyo Harada must strike if his plan to save the world by force will ever succeed. After a push to take more of the African continent – deposing corrupt governments and toppling extremists – Harada’s moves on the world stage were too bold to ignore. The alien agents of the Vine race, who were entrenched throughout the global power structure, have seen their opportunity to strike…and Harada now has his opportunity to break their tenuous pact of peace and take them down.

But with a specialized Vine killer among his own team – the ruthless and lethal Lord Vine-99 – will Harada be able to hold tight the grip on his monster’s leash… or will LV-99 turn on his master at last?

Review: Ninjak #10

Ninjak 10 Deadside Covers Final.inddIn December of 2015, a covert military intelligence unit sent a team of 20 agents and one special operative into a parallel dimension. Only one came back.

The purpose of their mission was classified. Now, out of options, MI-6 has recruited their most elite operative – codename: Ninjak – to follow the doomed mission’s sole witness back into the dimension called Deadside…and bring her missing teammates home.

Technology verses magic. Ninja verses demon. Sound interesting? Ninjak #10 is the start of a new four part series that, on the face of things, shows a lot of promise.

Valiant will frequently mark the start of a new story arc as an ideal jumping on point for new readers. It’s something that I have a chuckle about to myself when the series is also starting out, because if the first issue of a series isn’t a great jumping on point, then there’s problems. Ninjak #10, however is a pretty good jumping on point after the previous two story arcs (both will be out in trade paper back format soon so you can catch up), and finds the ninja heading into some very unfamiliar territory.

And yes, it is a pretty decent jumping on point.

As with most Valiant published comics, Ninjak #10 has some top notch art work, which isn’t surprising given that Doug Braithwaite and Juan Jose Ryp are responsible for the artwork this issue. Matt Kindt gives us a comic that both serves as a great opening to the new four part story arc, and as a solid comic in it’s own right. I’d honestly be surprised that with a creative team of this caliber if the failed to deliver anything less than a great comic.

For new readers, there’s really only one reference to a prior comic, but even then if you didn’t read that story (the most recent arc Shadow Seven) you won’t be left out in the cold. If you’ve never read any Ninjak, but you’ve always wanted too, then this is as good a place as any to start. And for existing readers, this is another solid issue in Ninjak‘s monthly series.

I’m genuinely looking forward to reading the rest of this arc.

Review: Unity #25

UNITY_025_COVER-A_KANOIn the wake of Book Of Death…Unity is no more. But before Valiant’s elite superteam says goodbye, an all-star lineup of writers, artists, and humorists reveal the unusual, offbeat, never-before-seen, lesser-known adventures of Unity! The tales too incredible to believe! The missions too oddball for public consumption!

Think Bloodshot only joined the team long enough to fight the Armor Hunters? Discover his newly declassified Unity missions! You saw Faith help Unity fight their opposite counterparts, the United…find out how else she helped out the team! Remember that time Quantum and Woody’s goat joined Unity? No? Well, it happened! We promise.

The final issue to Unity is billed as a comedy spectacular. And, for the most part it is.

There are some really quite funny stories here, but there’s just as many that fall a bit flat. Let’s not beat around the bush, here, because as the final issue in the current Unity run, this comic is not meant for new readers. If that’s you, and you want to read more about Valiant‘s premier super team, then you’ll want look into the trade paper back collections, and stay away from this issue until you’re a bit more familiar with the characters involved.

As a love letter to the fans, and a celebration of the past 24 issues, the series finale is a unique idea. It’s a largely light hearted look back at the characters we’ve followed across the past couple of years, putting them in situations that are effectively just there to elicit a laugh.

It almost works.

As it is, Unity #25 is an interesting comic. Although it wasn’t quite my cup of tea,  some of the stories within are worth reading, and the eclectic mix of art work truly gives an anthology feel to the comic. This is a comic that is worth checking out for existing fans of Valiant and Unity, but if you’re neither then this is probably not worth your time, but then what did you expect from a series finale?

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Monstress02_coverWednesdays are new comic book day!

Alex

Top Pick: Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 (DC Comics/IDW Publishing) – If this comic doesn’t excite you in some way, then I don’t really think anything I say here will change that. But this is a comic I’ve been waiting a decade for.

Ninjak #10 (Valiant) – A new story arc sees the technologically advanced ninja cross into the supernatural. I’m looking forward to seeing Ninjak as a fish out of water, so to speak.

We Stand On Guard #6 (Image Comics) – I’m sure there’ll be an epic conclusion here, and with all the rich connotations that have been sown throughout the series I don’t know how comfortable it’ll be to read. Which is exactly why I want to.

Brett

Top Pick: Monstress #2 (Image Comics) – The first issue blew me away with a deeply layered comic that mixed genres, concepts, and packaged it all with beautiful art. The first issue was oversized and I still craved more, it was that good. One of the best debuts of the year, I expect the second issue to be just as good.

Detective Comics #47, Gotham Academy #13, Grayson #15, Red Hood/Arsenal #7 (DC Comics) – All Robin War tie-ins. The lead in comic kicking off the event was solid, and this is event is one that I’m really looking forward to.

The Massive: Ninth Wave #1 (Dark Horse) – The original series tackled the concept of survival in a post ecological disaster world. I could debate that ending for along time, but the rest of the series was good. This prequel takes us back before the collapse and features the familiar crew of the Ninth Wave. This is environmental activism in comics.

Tomboy #2 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – The first issue of this series was one of the other best debuts of the year. It completely caught me off guard, and holy crap was it good. I can’t wait to read the second issue, it’s one of the first comics I plan to read this week to see what happens next and where this series goes.

The Walking Dead #149 (Image Comics) – After the ending of the last issue how could this not make it on the list? We’re one away from the big 150, and I expect something huge for that issue, so need to see the build up too.

Elana

Constantine the Hellblazer #7 (DC Comics) –  Constantine reunites with Swamp Thing: the herbacious hero in who’s book he first appeared! This is my favorite DC series now. Creative, funny, dark and damaged.

Gotham Academy #13 (DC Comics)Brand new story arc for my favorite teenage characters in my favorite fictional school. It looks like they’ll be forced to take sides in a currently political debate over teenage vigilanteism going on in Gotham. Can’t wait to hear these kids hash out a serious issue. Enjoy Karl Kerschl’s beautiful art on this book while he’s still there!

Monstress #2 (Image Comics)Easily the most imaginative new fantasy series in ages. Breathtaking art. Complex fantasy world-building that feels entirely fresh. The series touches on real world evils like war crimes, slavery and eugenics. And there are no bearded white dudes that you can’t tell apart. Actually, I think there’s no white people in this at all!  Marjorie Liu was our podcast guest: listen to our interview with her to learn more.

No Mercy #5 (Image Comics)College bound kids on a “charity” trip to pad their resumes now find their lives in peril. This series is both extremely suspenseful and thus far, extremely realistic in ways that make it even more disturbing. The cast of teens are so damn familiar because you’ve met them all in real life. Yet no reader could have a clue about what’s going to happen next. Check out our podcast with writer Alex Di Campi to hear more.

Snow Blind #1 (BOOM! Studios) Alaskan teen trying to get to the bottom of his messed-up family’s mysterious past. Quirky art, heavy on the symbolism. Promising start for a new series.

Javier

Limbo #2 (Image Comics) – This is my pick of the week.  Yes, yet another supernatural detective story. This one is set in Dedande (Dead End?) City.  A sort of Magnum PI based Mexican purgatory I’m guessing, but Dan Watters hasn’t revealed much yet. This urban fantasy has a voodoo queen with a fetish for 80s mixtapes, and Wijngaard’s art is captivating.

Ninjak # 10 (Valiant) – I’m a big fan of Valiant books; they put out quality work. This is a good jumping point for new Ninjak fans. Operation: Deadside, a four issue arc written by Matt Kindt, starts this week. Plus Shadowman makes an appearance.

Saints #3 (Image Comics) – Saintly super-powered teenagers on a road trip. I’ll admit I’m into the religious themed good versus evil themed books (i.e. Tithe is another favorite). Mackey’s snappy dialogue and Lewis’s sacrilegious art has me hooked; but I can see how this is going to be one of those books you either love or hate.

Snow Blind # 1 (BOOM! Studios) – This new four issue series from Boom!Studios, written by Ollie Masters (The Kitchen) and drawn by Tyler Jenkins (Peter Panzerfaust) promises to be a witness protection noir story set in the snow-covered landscape of Alaska.  If this is consistent with Ollie’s work on The Kitchen we are in for a cold-blooded treat.

Ultimates #2 (Marvel) – Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Ms. America Chavez, Spectrum, and Blue Marvel are back this week to tackle the Galactacus problem.  This issue can make or break the series.  Issue #1 I thought was spectacular, and I’m rooting for them to do more of the same this month.

Paul

Top Pick: Scarlet Witch #1 (Marvel) – Wanda has her own title.  That is all :)

Secret Wars #8 (Marvel) – This series is trudging along to the finale….I just want to see how it all ends already!  But I am looking forward to the Thing laying a king size smack down.

Ultimates #2 (Marvel) – How do you solve a problem like Galactus?  Apparently the Ultimates have the answer…but does Galactus even want to hear it?  This is going to be interesting.

A first look at A&A: The Adventures of Archer & Armstrong #1, a new ongoing series coming in March!

GET SMASHED OR BE SMASHED! This March…Valiant’s (somewhat) dynamic duo begin an all-out assault on the senses in the pages of a brand-new monthly series!

Valiant has released a first look inside A&A: The Adventures of Archer & Armstrong #1 – the FIRST ISSUE of Valiant’s next flagship series from red-hot rising star Rafer Roberts and Valiant-exclusive superstar David Lafuente! “IN THE BAG” starts here on March 16th as Archer descends into the infinite depths of his partner’s bottomless satchel to rescue Armstrong from an age-old enemy…and battles his way through an upside-down world of arcane architecture, lost treasures, and strange creatures bent on making our world their own!

Meet Armstrong: Since the ancient city of Ur, this immortal adventurer has spent the last 7,000 years drinking and carousing his way through history alongside some of the greatest merrymakers the world has ever known.

Meet Archer: A sheltered teenage martial arts master and expert marksman who was raised for a single purpose – to kill the devil incarnate. Little did he know that this undying evil was actually Armstrong (he’s actually a pretty good guy…once you get to know him) and, since hitting the road together, these two have become great friends and even better partners.

Now: Archer is about to set off on his most dangerous mission yet – a quest into the mystic reaches of Armstrong’s bottomless satchel to liberate his friend and comrade from the clutches of the mad god Bacchus! (Okay, so, Armstrong went into the satchel himself to get a bottle of whiskey that he kinda misplaced and got stuck. It’s like the Amazon warehouse of arcane treasures in there…and he doesn’t exactly have a maid service.)

Imprisoned in Armstrong’s satchel for centuries, Bacchus now commands a legion of monsters, goblins and golems bent on escaping back into the world of man and enacting revenge on their captor… Can Archer single-handedly combat the godly embodiment of intoxication himself – and rescue his best buddy – without becoming lost amongst Armstrong’s endless repository of bizarre artifacts and historical oddities in the process?
