Valiant’s Headline-Grabbing Hero Soars in Faith #1

Faith takes flight! This January, the breakout hero of 2016 is bursting out of the pages of Harbinger…and into her very first solo adventure with an all-new series!

Valiant presents a first look inside Faith #1 (of 4) – the FIRST ISSUE of the the year’s high-flying new limited series from rising star Jody Houser and explosive artists Francis Portela and Marguerite Sauvage! On January 27th, Faith “Zephyr” Herbert is charging to the forefront of the Valiant Universe for a blockbuster-scale adventure packed with spectacular super-heroics, alien intrigue, and global stakes!

Orphaned at a young age, Faith Herbert – a psionically gifted “psiot” discovered by the Harbinger Foundation – has always aspired to greatness. But now this once-ordinary teenager is taking control of her destiny and becoming the hard-hitting hero she’s always known she can be – complete with a mild-mannered secret identity, unsuspecting colleagues, and a day job as a reporter that routinely throws her into harm’s way! Well, at least she thought it would… When she’s not typing up listicles about cat videos, Faith makes a secret transformation to patrol the night as the City of Angels’ own leading superhero – the sky-soaring Zephyr!

But flying solo is going to be tougher than she ever thought when Zephyr uncovers a deep-rooted alien conspiracy. Two-bit burglars and car thieves are one thing, but when the world needs a hero to stave off a full-blown extraterrestrial invasion, will Faith find herself in over her head…or ready for her biggest challenge yet?

On January 27th, find out why L.A.’s newest guardian is shooting for greatness… Featuring covers by Jelena Kevic-Djurdjevic, Marguerite Sauvage, Clayton Henry, Kano, and Colleen Coover!

The Ultimate Deathtrap for Wrath of the Eternal Warrior in Labyrinth

Valiant has announced “Labyrinth” – a calculating, six-issue blockbuster colliding Wrath of the Eternal Warrior with one of Valiant’s greatest villains in 2016!

Valiant’s next landmark storyline of the New Year begins with the two-part “Prelude to LabyrinthA” in March’s Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #5 by author Robert Venditti and artist Juan Jose Ryp! Then, the escape begins in full force with Labyrinth” – PART 1 (of 4) in May’s Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #7, featuring the triumphant return of visionary artist Raul Allen! The next epic step in the Eternal Warrior’s journey out of Hell and back into battle starts here!

Across six millennia, Gilad Anni-Padda – an immortal warrior sworn to forever serve the Earth – has felled zealots and madmen, emperors and tyrants in the course of his duty. But nothing he’s faced yet can prepare him to run the “Labyrinth” – a miles-long maze of horrors specifically designed to undermine his every strength, enhance his every weakness…and to send him screaming into the darkness of death at every turn. But what kind of brilliant but twisted psyche could have possibly conceived such a monument to terror…and for how many centuries have they plotted to break the mind and body of history’s most formidable soldier?

The answer lies at the heart of the “Labyrinth” itself…and as Gilad endures a gauntlet of cutting-edge technology and sharpened steel, he’ll soon discover why the merciless figure known only as THE DYING MAN has singled the Eternal Warrior out for the ultimate deathtrap.

He will run. He will suffer. And when his ordeal is ended, the Eternal Warrior’s place in the Valiant Universe will be forever altered by the cruel implements of his enemy’s “Labyrinth”

Review: Bloodshot: Reborn #9

BSRB_009_COVER-A_SUAYANBLOODSHOT VERSUS BLOODSHOT!

The epic finale to “THE HUNT” brings Ray Garrison face-to-face with the nanite-infected mass murderer that has wreaked havoc across Colorado. But will Ray be able to pull the trigger when he discovers the identity of his adversary? Or will he succumb to the dark whispers of the nanites that threaten to destroy his humanity once-and-for-all?

With a battle raging for his soul, Ray Garrison faces off against the nanite killer, and his own self. It’s as interesting as it sounds.

Jeff Lemire has crafted a story explores the inner workings of Bloodshot’s soul, and asks just how much you would give up so that others wouldn’t have too? The Hunt is a very non traditional hero story in that regard, even though it’s set against the almost standard search for and confront the bad guy tale. The entire arc has been fantastically scripted, and this issue is no exception; I’d even go so far as to say that the best was saved for last.

The pencils of Butch Guice are complimented wonderfully by Tom  Palmer‘s inks and David Baron‘s colours. The artists work gives us a really gritty looking comic that suits the story to an absolute T. This series has an aesthetic to it that has just as much credit due when it comes to the story telling as the script itself.

Bloodshot Reborn #9 is a fitting conclusion to a story about a man coming to grips with who he has to be, whether he wants to or not. Whether you pick this up in trade, or hunt for the back issues, this is a story that’s worth reading.

Review: Rai #12

rai 12 cover“THE ORPHAN” ends here with an explosive finale…and a shocking new direction for New Japan’s fallen guardian!

After being exiled to Earth by Father, Rai has survived on his own, finding new friends and discovering some familiar faces. Now, fully restored and ready for battle, Rai is ready to return to New Japan and rescue the allies he left behind!

If this comic is an arc ending, I’m a monkey’s uncle.

I’m not saying that this is a bad comic, far from it, but when the solicitations (quoted above) point toward an explosive ending to an arc that has delivered beyond expectations so far it’s hard to feel a little thrown off.

Ironically enough, it isn’t that the arc didn’t end that’s the reason for my feeling somewhat off kilter, it’s that I was expecting an epic showdown that didn’t happen. The comic itself is still very good, and the art is still captivatingly beautiful, but this isn’t the finale that has been advertised or promised, but it feels unfair to let that miscommunication cloud my opinion of the issue, because it’s actually very good, it’s just not the finale.

That’ll probably come next week.

Matt Kindt and Clayton Crain have delivered another fantastic issue in this series. With Rai finally meeting up with a much older version of The Eternal Warrior, which was something I had been anticipating reading more of ever since the last page reveal in the previous issue, there’s some very interesting dialogue that happens this issue between the Earth’s immortal guardian and the soulful android.

Clayton Crain‘s artwork is, as always, fantastical, eerie and very atmospheric. His ability to convey the beauty of the supposedly barren earth, coupled with the brutality of the fight scenes is striking. That the comic is fantastic to look at is impossible to deny, and the build up to the inevitably explosive conclusion next issue is very well done. Rai #12 is a great looking comic, one of the prettiest to hit the racks this week (which is always the case with this series), but it certainly isn’t the finale that’s promised. And you know what? That’s fine by me. Yeah, I was a little thrown off after reading the comic and finding not an ending, but yet more build up. However that’s not a bad thing, especially with the hints dropped toward the end of the issue that seem to be building toward a finale that doesn’t happen.

I’m wondering if that’ll arrive next issue, but if it doesn’t, I’m content to wait.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

MIRAGE-SEC_001_COVER-A_DJURDJEVICWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Alex

Top Pick: Rocketeer At War #1 (IDW Publishing) – I loved the Rocketeer movie, and I can’t wait to get my hands on this comic. It ticks three of my attention grabbing boxes: pulp style heroes, a mid  20th century setting, and the Rocketeer. Will it actually be any good? I’ll find out and let you know!

Dark Knight III: The Master Race #2 (DC Comics) – I still haven’t read the first issue, yet, but with all the great things I’ve heard about that, it’s easy to be excited for this issue. Just not the price tag.

Extraordinary X-Men #4 (Marvel) – One of the best X-Men comics I’ve read in years, and it’s drawn by Humberto Ramos, who I’m a huge fan of. This is a comic that can’t really go wrong for me on paper.

Brett

Top Pick: The Death-Defying Doctor Mirage: Second Lives #1 (Valiant) – The first volume of Doctor Mirage was fantastic and to get a second just makes me happy. The character is awesome and art fantastic. Basically, what I’d expect from a Valiant book.

Darth Vader #14 (Marvel) – The latest entry to Vader Down? Yes please! The storyline reminds us how much of a badass Vader truly is.

Patsy Walker AKA Hellcat #1 (Marvel) – It’s an intriguing character to be getting her own series, but she has a higher profile thanks to Jessica Jones. I want to see where it goes.

The Paybacks #4 (Dark Horse) – One of the funniest, most entertaining superhero comics this year. Each issue has delivered pure entertainment.

Venus #1 (BOOM! Studios) – Mankind head to the stars due to the depletion of natural resources on Earth. China has claimed Mars which forces the U.S. to head to Venus where things don’t go well. Sounds awesome.

Elana

Angela Queen of Hel #3 (Marvel) – “To the soundtrack of a totally sick Nordic death metal solo, Angela and Sera embark on the conquest to crown Angela Queen of the Dead…and encounter some who they have sent to the afterlife themselves!” – nuff said.

Island #5 (Image Comics) – Brandon Grahams ambitious anthology magazine features “Stories of space cannibalism, future tech dependency and volcano gods along with articles and illustration in the monthly oversized comics magazine.” this month!

Kaptara TP Vol. 1 (Image Comics) – The first issue’s title was “Space: Why you gotta be like that?” Everyone talks about Chip Zdarsky’s work on Sex Criminals, Howard the Duck, Jughead, but this creator-owned series is where his humor and inventiveness really shines. He’s doing a modern, adult riff on He-Man with a gay Indian-American in the lead Keith “Prince of the Dancefloor”. Kagan Mcleod’s art makes riotous cartoons out of He-Man and 70s space and sword and sorcery art. I love it.

Patsy Walker AKA Hellcat #1 (Marvel) – Hellcat? Hell yes! Writer Kate Leth is a fan-favorite bisexual feminist comics dynamo and she’s finally getting her first Marvel monthly title.  Patsy’s friends with all our favorite heroines; She-Hulk and now Jessica Jones (according to Netflix). This comic is positioned to be a hit.

Princeless Book 5 Make Yourself #0 (Action Lab Entertainment) – The all-ages series of girl knights, and scientists and pirates and rogues goes a little introspective in this story arc. It’s going to be great.

Javier

Top Pick: Bloodshot Reborn #9 (Valiant) – The current ‘Hunt’ arc comes to an end, so this will likely be an exciting new beginning for the main character.  Plus I am looking forward to Butch Guice’s alt cover.

The Death-Defying Doctor Mirage Second Lives #1 (Valiant) – Valiant attracts talent, and they lined up Jen Van Meter (Hopeless Savages) and acclaimed artist Roberto de la Torre. A lot of hype behind this one, so I’m going to check it out; and Valiant hasn’t disappointed me yet. Also, I’ve never read Meter’s Hopeless Savages, but I plan to pick up used copies of the graphic novels to see what I missed.

Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur #2 (Marvel) – This one is just simple fun. They all don’t have to be dark and violent.

Pretty Deadly #7 (Image Comics) – One of these days DeConnick and Rios will explain this one.  All I know is that I walk away feeling enlightened after reading this fantastical blend of Western and Magical art.

Wild’s End: Enemy Within #4 (BOOM! Studios) – I’ve been enjoying this one as a sci-fi fan.  It’s Animal Farm meets War of the Worlds.

GET SMASHED…OR BE SMASHED! Valiant’s (somewhat) dynamic duo are going “IN THE BAG” for AN ALL-NEW ONGOING SERIES from rising star Rafer Roberts and comic book superstar David Lafuente!

Meet Armstrong: Since the ancient city of Ur, this immortal adventurer has spent the last 7,000 years drinking and carousing his way through history alongside some of the greatest merrymakers the world has ever known.

Meet Archer: A sheltered teenage martial arts master and expert marksman that was raised for a single purpose – to kill the devil incarnate. Little did he know that this undying evil was actually Armstrong (he’s actually a pretty good guy…once you get to know him) and, since hitting the road together, the two have become great friends and even better partners.

Now: Archer is about to set off on his most dangerous mission yet – a quest into the mystic reaches of Armstrong’s bottomless satchel to liberate his friend and comrade from the clutches of the mad god Bacchus! (Okay, so, Armstrong went into the satchel himself to get a bottle of whiskey that he kinda misplaced and got stuck. It’s like the Amazon warehouse of arcane treasures in there…and he doesn’t exactly have a maid service.)

Imprisoned in Armstrong’s satchel for centuries, Bacchus now commands a legion of monsters, goblins and golems bent on escaping back into the world of man and enacting revenge on their captor… Can Archer single-handedly combat the godly embodiment of intoxication himself – and rescue his best buddy – without becoming lost amongst Armstrong’s endless repository of bizarre artifacts and historical oddities in the process?

In time, even the dead may die…and, now, after multiple 2015 Harvey Award nominations, the most sought-after couple in comics returns with an all-new adventure from Eisner Award-nominated writer Jen Van Meter (Hopeless Savages) and acclaimed artist Roberto de la Torre (Daredevil)!

Occult investigators Shan and Hwen Mirage lived their lives in the thrall of an epic love that few will ever have…until Hwen died tragically before his time. Now, after a perilous trip through the underworld, Shan and Hwen are reunited…but Hwen is still an intangible spirit of the dead – incapable of opening a spellbook or even touching his wife.

Their options exhausted, the death-defying Doctors Mirage are about to enact a dangerous spell to restore Hwen’s solid form…and grant his ghost a second life. But, in the wrong hands, their ancient rite will become a tool of terror – and unleash a force of pure, homicidal evil that lusts for the murder of the living and the dead alike… a torturous death that obliterates not just everything a person ever had in this world, but everything their ghost will be in the next!

Review: Ivar, Timewalker #12

IVAR_012_COVER-A_ALLENIt’s the final issue featuring creation, annihilation… and the debut of an all-new Timewalker!

The Mistress’s true origin stands revealed as Neela Sethi confronts her future! Meanwhile, the mantle of Timewalker passes from one hero to another and Ivar makes the move that will change the Valiant Universe forever!

Ivar, Timewalker  has been one of the best comics published by Valiant over the past few months, and so this issue is a bitter sweet one to hold in my digital hands.

The final issue of Ivar, Timewalker is probably the best issue in the series, which is exactly what you want in a finale. Fred Van Lente has capped off a superb story arc with a final chapter that includes one of the most chaotically entertaining fights I’ve read in a long time, coupled with some brilliantly witty dialogue sprinkled liberally throughout.

I really can’t understate just how impressed I am with Fred Van Lente‘s writing with this series. The time travel aspect present here is quite possibly one of my favorite interpretations of how travel through the time stream works that I’ve come across in a long time.  It functions as a part of the story, enabling the comic to feel complete without ever stepping close to the convoluted mess that so often accompanies time travel.

Pere Perez and Andrew Dalhouse send, Ivar, Timewalker in spectacular fashion. Their ability to capture Ivar‘s arrogant cheek is wonderful, and goes along way to emphasizing the quality of the writing. With the creative team firing on all cylinders like they are, it’s a genuine shame that the issue marks the series finale.

And honestly, when that’s my biggest complaint? That should say something.

Ivar, Timewalker #12 is a great read, but it’s far from new reader friendly. As a single issue, it’s good, but when read as the finale to the Ending History arc it’s stunning. Do yourself a favor and read this.
