THE ULTIMATE GOODBYE…

Following the events of ULTIMATE ENDGAME #5, the creative teams of all the Ultimate books come together one last time to say farewell…

ULTIMATE UNIVERSE FINALE #1

The Fight with the Maker Continues in Ultimate Endgame #2

The final chapter of Marvel’s new Ultimate Universe kicked off last week in Ultimate Endgame #1 by Deniz Camp, Terry Dodson, and Jonas Scharf. Available in multiple covers as well as Marvel’s True Believers Blind Bags, which can contain rare variant covers and one-of-a-kind sketch covers, Ultimate Endgame delivered a shocking reveal…that the Maker has returned in a terrifying new form!

Fans can see all the available covers for Ultimate Endgame #2, arriving on February 4, along with a sneak peek at interior artwork. And with Ultimate Endgame #1 now on stands, it’s time to reveal Mark Brooks’ main cover for issue four, showing the Maker’s new form, and issue five, the pulse-pounding, oversized final issue!

The Maker used time travel to create his ideal Earth by systematically preventing anyone from ever becoming a super hero and establishing a council of super villains that ruled the world from the shadows. But for the past two years, the Maker has been trapped inside The City, and while he’s been away, heroes have emerged, determined to fix the world!

In Ultimate Endgame #1, the heroes of the Ultimate Universe entered The City, where two thousand years have passed. There, they met Immortus, who turned out to be Howard Stark, Iron Lad’s father, who had been trapped there as well. Immortus informed the group that The Maker was now more powerful than ever after he somehow merged with The City itself! Fans can see the monstrosity for themselves as Spider-Man bravely faces the diabolical genius singlehandedly on the newly revealed Ultimate Endgame #4 cover.

And the end has only just begun! In Ultimate Endgame #2, the heroes continue their desperate search for a way to stop the Maker and change the fate of their universe forever. In coming issues, the X-Men, Black Panther, Wolverine, and more will join the fight, all leading up to the cataclysmic showdown with The Maker in Ultimate Endgame #5.

Ultimate Endgame #2 is written by Camp with art by Dodson and Scharf and features a main cover by Mark Brooks and variant covers by Brooks, Tony Daniel, Terry Dodson, Lee Garbett, Jonas Scharf, R.B. Silva, Francesco Mobili, and Stonehouse.

Mini Reviews: The Ultimates #19 and Ultimate Endgame #1

Ultimate Endgame #1

Sometimes, the staff at Graphic Policy read more comics than we’re able to get reviewed. When that happens you’ll see a weekly feature compiling reviews of the comics, or graphic novels, we just didn’t get a chance to write a full one for.

These are Graphic Policy’s Mini Reviews and Recommendations.

Logan

Ultimates #19 (Marvel) Deniz Camp and Juan Frigeri‘s Ultimates #19 is the character-driven companion to the fireworks of Ultimate Endgame #1. This issue zeroes on The Wasp, her relationship with Hank Pym, and decision to join HAND as a traitor. It’s a bittersweet read and really shows how much Janet cares more Hank despite having to defer their dreams and make moral compromises. Camp is definitely inspired by Hank and Janet’s history in the mainstream Marvel Universe, but adds psychological depth. Finally, Ultimates #19 isn’t just talking heads and longing looks, but Frigeri also shows how much of a badass is in an exciting sequence where she zips through the HAND’s soldiers. Overall: 9.0 Verdict: Buy

Ultimate Endgame #1 (Marvel)Ultimate Endgame #1 is a decent start to the Earth-6160 concluding event. It really doesn’t get any better than the opening sequence where Deniz Camp and Jonas Scharf has The Maker kill all the Eternals in 1963 with Scharf’s art a twisted mirror of Jack Kirby’s work. All the rest is just setup and getting the main cast of characters under the Dome wrapping up with a half-hearted twist. This might seem like I strongly disliked this issue, but kudos to Camp for making Spider-Man the heart of the comic. I enjoyed his banter with Iron Lad, his last touching moment with his family, and of course, his one-liners/dad jokes as we get really Jonathan Hickman with it. Also, the artist choice was a stroke of genius with Terry and Rachel Dodson handling the more traditional superhero moments, and Scharf drawing the more sci-fi stuff influenced by Kirby as well as 2000 AD/Marvel UK. Overall: 7.6 Verdict: Buy

Ultimate Endgame #1 Delivers Some Surprises

Ultimate Endgame #1

Two (thousand) years have passed in the Ultimate Universe, but inside the City, the Maker has had thousands of years to prepare for his return! With the barrier around the City finally gone, heroes all across the Ultimate Universe must mobilize to defeat the Maker before it’s game over. For everyone. Meanwhile, the rest of the world wages World War III… Ultimate Endgame #1 kicks off the beginning of the end to the Ultimate Universe.

For some time now, Marvel has been setting up the end to the Ultimate Universe. The announcement came as a surprise to many as the comics have seemed to be a hit. Now, it’s possible this is the end to this current iteration and after Ultimate Endgame is done, we’ll get a new world, but no matter, this series will be a game changer.

Written by Deniz Camp, Ultimate Endgame #1 drops readers right into the action. The people have risen up against the Maker and his rulers and the Ultimates are prepared to take on the Maker in his bubble. It’s an interesting debut that skips the catch up portion instead giving us glimpses around the globe through Iron Lad who is observing what’s going on.

With this being the finale, it feels like Ultimate Endgame #1 just accepts those reading it are likely already fans of the Ultimate line and don’t need much background or information. That helps and hurts as there’s some odd moments like Ultimate Spider-Man being recruited while his series has been relatively siloed from the Ultimates. There’s the lack of Ultimate Wolverine, Ultimate X-Men, and Ultimate Black Panther are nowhere to be seen. It highlights the rather disjointed universe that has been playing out for about two years now. The reason for Spider-Man’s inclusion isn’t really given and against such a foe as the Maker, a bit of a headscratcher.

Still, we’ve had the countdown to the Maker’s return playing out for some time and it’s here at last and what is revealed is… intriguing. While not the jaw dropping surprise one might expect, the reveal is more mystery and odd sci-fi than superhero battle. Within lies some Ultimate debuts including one obscure character who is sure to cause some web searches and for those that know, and fun addition to a world that’s part of the multiverse.

There’s also at least one moment that’s truly shocking as the Maker’s forces counterattack that takes the wind out of the revolution and throws things up in the air.

The art by Terry Dodson and Rachel Dodson as well as Jonas Scharf is good. There’s a lot to pack in and it feels like quick glimpses without a ton of detail at times. What’s revealed when we enter the Maker’s dome is strange and weird, defying expectations as it should. The Maker has had thousands of years to evolve and plan and under the dome awaits sci-fi mysteries. When the art does get to focus in more subdued moments, it tells a story with the small details. But, there’s so much to get through, that feels the exception than the rule. The color by Federico Blee and Edgar Delgado and lettering by Cory Petit all come together to bring together a rather muted comic visually instead of one that opops, there’s a slight worn feel to it.

While I’m not convinced this is really the end of the Ultimate Universe, Ultimate Endgame #1 does have a climactic feel to it. It feels like that world ending big picture popcorn blockbuster where the sets, visuals, and chaos are the draw. There’s still quite a while to go and a lot of pieces of the puzzle to put together, but as far as event debuts, this is an intriguing one in both positive and frustrating ways.
