Transformers vs. The Terminator

As a child of the 1980s, I can truly say that television was in its heyday. We got to enjoy some of the best programming that many of us still revel in. It has gotten to the point where many of these shows are coming back in some form. You can look at the past few months, for evidence of this.

One of the best things about those television shows, especially the ones on ABC, was the crossover episodes. Usually, a crossover between similar shows made sense, which is why NBC’s Chicago franchises enjoy this flexibility. This is also why the Avengers movies are so enjoyable, seeing a cast of literally thousands come together after years of build-up. In Transformers vs. The Terminator, a crossover between two iconic franchises makes for an interesting story.

We’re taken to Los Angeles in 2029, where the war between humans and Skynet has taken a cease-fire, as the Decepticons are waging a war on Planet Earth, looking to conquer by any means necessary.  Skynet sends a Terminator back to 1984, a T-800, where he meets a young Sarah Connor, and who in this timeline, still is the key to defeating the enemy, the Decepticons. As he searches for the Autobot Base, it seems like he may be too late, as Megatron stands over his lifeless body, which is when the T-800 surprises them with suppression fire. This gives Bumblebee a chance to rescue Optimus, and give the Autobots an upper hand. Meanwhile, we find out Megatron is in search of Energon on earth, something he finds in multitudes at the Cyberdyne Systems plant, which leads to a standoff between the T-800 and the Autobots against the Decepticons.  By the book’s end, one villain falls while one hero looks for all Transformers to live peacefully, while T-800 accomplishes its mission.

Transformers vs. The Terminator is a fun story that meshes the best parts of both franchises. The story by the creative team is thrilling and relatable. The art by the creative team is gorgeous. Altogether, a story that asks the question of why there are not more stories like this.

TRANSFORMERS VS. TERMINATOR #1

1984 was a pretty important year with so many of today’s beloved pop culture properties debuting during that year. Transformers and The Terminator were two of them and 36 years later, the two properties meet in this new miniseries. Transformers vs. Terminator #1 delivers an interesting debut that’s a twist on the classic story. Unfortunately, something falls a little short in the actual delivery.

David Mariotte, Tom Waltz, and John Barber all contribute to the story with Mariotte and Barber credited as writing it. It’s a familiar story with a warrior from the future sent back in time to prevent an apocalypse. In this case, a Terminator is sent back to protect Skynet from its enemies, Transformers. It’s a twist on the original story putting Skynet in the role of the resistance. Sarah Conner is involved still and the Terminator is the T-800 version, though the likeness to Arnold is… not close.

By trying to give us a twist on the original film, the first issue feels like a bad copy devoid of original and interesting ideas. Compare that to the recent crossover between Transformers and Ghostbusters which was packed with them. And that’s part of the problem with this debut. The entire comic feels “not close.”

There’s clunky dialogue. The sequence of events is a bit choppy. There’s just a lot there that feels off like an odd generic version of the classic. The story easily could have been the Resistance we knew taking on a Skynet/Transformers alliance but instead it delivers a “no matter who wins, we lose” storyline. There’s hints of something really cool here but as delivered it falls flat. The cool factor isn’t there, even if the concept is a childhood mash-up.

Part of the issue is the art by Alex Milne. While the Transformers look fantastic, the T-800 is bad. There’s attempts to make it look like the original film but it just doesn’t work. Add in the attempt to translate Arnold’s awkward delivery and it’s art that’s either exciting or feels like a comedic take.

Transformers vs. Terminator #1 should be an easy one to nail down. But, this debut stumbles from the beginning. From bad dialogue to at times iffy art, there’s just so many crossovers for both properties that’s better and more worth your time.

A for Anonymous (Bold Type Books) – A graphic novel that focuses on the hacktivists that took on some powerful targets.

Far Sector #5 (DC Comics/DC’s Young Animal) – This series is the best thing DC is releasing with fantastic artwork and entertaining story. It’s not too late to get started reading this one.

Ghostbusters: Year One #3 (IDW Publishing) – The series has been a lot of fun as it spotlights each member of the team giving us a little more insight into the beloved characters.

Heavy Vinyl: Y2K-O (BOOM! Studios) – The comic series goes graphic novel and in this chapter, the girls enter a Battle of the Bands to stop a shadowy corporation from destroying the world of digital music and blame it on Y2K.

Hellions #1 (Marvel) – The latest addition to Marvel’s X-Men relaunch that brings together some of the villains on Krakoa.

Wolverine #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was amazing and we’re hoping the second is just as good. This is the highlight of Marvel’s X-relaunch so far.

X-O Manowar #1 (Valiant) – The debut issue is fantastic for long time fans and new readers. An amazing first issue that’s a hell of a lot of fun.
