DC League of Super-Pets Swoops to First Place

DC League of Super-Pets

It was another new film in first place this weekend at the box office as DC League of Super-Pets took the prize. The film grossed an estimated $23 million to take the spot. It also earned $18.4 million at the international box office for a worldwide gross of $41.4 million. The result is of course a win, taking first place, but the overall numbers are a bit mixed as other animated kids films have opened much larger this year. And with star power, the film probably should have had more support. We’ll see how the film does long term as school begins across the country.

Nope was bumped to second place dropping 58.2% in its second week and earning $18.5 million. Domestically, the film has grossed $80.6 million. The film has had no international returns and it’s a headscratcher as Get Out earned $79.5 million overseas and Us earned $80.1 million.

Thor: Love and Thunder came in third place with and estimated $13.1 million to bring its domestic total to $301.5 million. Over the week, the film grossed $38.9 million internationally to bring that total to $360.9 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $662.4 million.

Minions: The Rise of Gru was in fourth place with an estimated $10.9 million. The film has grossed $320.4 million domestically. The film also grossed about $47.6 million at the international box office. There it has earned just under $390 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $710.4 million.

Top Gun: Maverick might be the surprise the year. Rounding out the top five, the film grossed $8.2 million to bring its gross to $650.1 million. Over the week it added $23.9 million to its international total to bring that to $671 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $1.321 billion. It’s not a surprise the film has been a success but that amount is completely beyond anyone’s expectations.

In comic film news…

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness earned $13,000 and bringing its domestic total to $411.3 million. Internationally, the film grossed about $100,000 over the week to bring that to $543.3 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed a little over $954.5 million. It looks like the film will fall short of the $1 billion mark.

The week’s overall box office success…

Initial numbers has 46 films earning $97,720,048 from 35,781 theaters. That’s a a dip of about a third from last weekend’s $126,220,718 from 33,226 theaters and 47 films. It’s a decent weekend but might be the first under $100 million in some time. We’ll need to wait for final numbers to see. The average earning was $2,731.06 this past weekend, again, a decrease from last weekend’s $3,798.85.

Nope, it’s Thor: Love and Thunder in second as Jordan Peele takes first again

Nope

Nope makes it three for three for Jordan Peele as the movie debuted in first place with an impressive $44 million. His first film, Get Out, debuted with $33.4 million and US opened with $71.1 million. With positive reviews, the film should have pretty solid legs and not suffer from the massive second week drop horror films tend to experience.

Thor: Love and Thunder dropped to second in its third week with an estimated $22.1 million to bring its domestic total to $276.2 million. Internationally, the film has grossed around $322 million for a worldwide total of $598.2 million.

Minions: The Rise of Gru slipped one spot to come in third with an estimated $17.7 million. Domestically, the film has grossed $297.9 million. Internationally, the film has grossed around $72.2 million to lift that to $342.4 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $640.3 million.

In fourth place was Where the Crawdads Sing with an estimated $10.3 million to bring the domestic total to $38.3 million. Internationally, the film has grossed $4,100,000 for a worldwide total of $42.4 million.

Rounding down the top five was Top Gun: Maverick which grossed a little over $10 million. The film has grossed $635.6 million domestically moving into 9th place for the all-time gross. Internationally, the film added about $27.7 million to its total to bring that to $647.1 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $1.283 billion. Worldwide, the film is in 17th place for all-time gross.

In comic film news…

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness earned $22,000 and bringing its domestic total to $411.3 million. Internationally, the film grossed about $300,000 over the week to bring that to $543.1 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed a little over $954.4 million. It looks like the film will fall short of the $1 billion mark.

The week’s overall box office success…

Initial numbers has 47 films earning $126,220,718 from 33,226 theaters. That’s a small dip from last weekend’s $132,781,558 from 31,592 theaters and 52 films. It’s another strong weekend for 2022. The average earning was $3,798.85 this past weekend, again, a decrease from last weekend’s $4,203.01.

Thor: Love and Thunder repeats in first as it tumbles 68% but crosses $700 million

Thor: Love and Thunder

Thor: Love and Thunder was in first place again this past weekend. That’s not a surprise as the film didn’t face any major new competition. The film earned an estimated $46 million domestically a drop of 68.1% from the opening weekend. That’s on the higher end of second weekend drops for these types of films. The movie had mixed reviews so the impact of that might explain some of the drop. Domestically, the film has grossed $233.3 million after two weeks. Internationally, the film fared better earning around $320.7 million over the week to lift that total to $479.7 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed a little under $713 million.

With Ragnarok earning $850.5 million over its entire run, there’s little doubt the film will beat that. Will it cross $1 billion? We’ll see, but the bet is the film’s grosses will mostly be driven by the international box office.

Minions: The Rise of Gru came in second place again adding $26 million to its domestic gross. That now stands at $262.6 million after three weeks. Internationally, it earned around $80.3 million over the week to bring that total to $270.1 million. Worldwide the film has grossed $532.7 million.

Where the Crawdads Sing debuted in third place with $17 million.

Top Gun: Maverick dropped one spot to fourth with an estimated $12 million. The film has grossed a little under $618 million domestically continuing the film’s surprise success (we all knew it would be, but not these numbers). Internationally, the film added about $33.2 million to bring that total to $619.4 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $1.237 billion making it the top film of the year. It’s close to cracking the top ten domestic total of all time and is now #20 in the worldwide all time total. It’d need about $280 million to reach the top ten for that though.

Elvis rounded out the top five with an estimated $7.6 million. The film has grossed $106.2 million after four weeks. It added just $200,000 internationally over the week to bring that to $64.2 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $170.4 million.

In comic film news…

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness earned $72,000 and bringing its domestic total to $411.2 million. Internationally, the film grossed about $500,000 over the week to bring that to $542.9 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed a little over $954.1 million. It looks like the film will fall short of the $1 billion mark.

The week’s overall success…

Initial numbers has 52 films earning $132,781,558 from 31,592 theaters. That’s an expected dip from last weekend’s impressive $238,305,756 from 26,576 theaters and 47 films. It’s another strong weekend for 2022. The average earning was $4,203.01 this past weekend, about half from the previous weekend’s $8,966.95.
