The Suicide Squad Gets a New Trailer “Rebellion”

A brand new trailer for James Gunn‘s The Suicide Squad is here.

Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin, and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.

The film stars Margot Robbie (“Birds of Prey,” “Bombshell”), Idris Elba (“Avengers: Infinity War”), John Cena (upcoming HBO Max series “Peacemaker,” “Bumblebee”), Joel Kinnaman (“Suicide Squad”), Jai Courtney (the “Divergent” franchise), Peter Capaldi (“World War Z,” BBC’s “Doctor Who” ), David Dastmalchian (upcoming “Dune,” “Ant-Man and the Wasp”), Daniela Melchior (“Parque Mayer”), Michael Rooker (the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films), Alice Braga (“Elysium”), Pete Davidson (“The King of Staten Island,” TV’s “Saturday Night Live”), Joaquín Cosio (“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” TV’s “Narcos: Mexico”), Juan Diego Botto (“The Europeans”), Storm Reid (“The Invisible Man,” “A Wrinkle in Time”, “Euphoria”), Nathan Fillion (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” TV’s “The Rookie”), Steve Agee (“Brightburn,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”), Sean Gunn (the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, the “Avengers” films), Mayling Ng (“Wonder Woman”), Flula Borg (“Ralph Breaks the Internet”), Jennifer Holland (“Brightburn,” upcoming HBO Max series “Peacemaker”) and Tinashe Kajese (TV’s “Valor,” “The Inspectors”), with Sylvester Stallone (the “Rocky,” “Rambo” and “Expendables” franchises), and Viola Davis (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Suicide Squad”).

It is set for release nationwide in theaters and IMAX on August 6, 2021 and will be available on HBO Max for 31 days from theatrical release.

Ava DuVernay’s New Gods and Games Wan’s The Trench Not Moving Forward

DC Logo

The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop that Warner Bros. has shelved two of its upcoming, and high-profile, films based on DC properties. Ava DuVernay‘s New Gods and James Wan‘s The Trench are not going forward at this time.

In a statment, Warner Bros. and DC said:

As part of our DC slate, some legacy development titles including New Gods and The Trench will not be moving forward. We thank our partners Ava DuVernay, Tom King, James Wan and Peter Safran for their time and collaboration during this process and look forward to our continued partnership with them on other DC stories. The projects will remain in their skillful hands if they were to move forward in the future.

New Gods was a take on the classic Jack Kirby characters with DuVernay directing and working with comic writer Tom King. The film has been in development since 2018. DuVernay is working on the television series Naomi based on the DC character which will air on The CW.

The Trench was a spin-off from the blockbuster Aquaman. The horror-tinged film featured Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald on the script with Wan developing as producer with Peter Safran. Wan is still working on Aquaman 2 which will begin shooting later this year.

While these two projects have been shelved for now, they may happen down the road. It is believed the issue is there was no “natural” place to release the films in the current upcoming plans.

DC is currently focused on a multi-platform approach with films like The Suicide Squad and The Batman bleeding over into television with the HBO Max series Peacemaker and a show focused on the Gotham police department.

DC is still focused on creating a film universe with The Flash, tackling the DC multiverse, being key to what comes next. Upcoming films include Black Adam, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and projects featuring Blue Beetle, Batgirl, Supergirl, Static Shock, and Green Lantern Corps. There’s also the third Wonder Woman film, newly announced Zatanna, and Superman film produced by J.J. Abrams and written by Ta-Nehisi Coates.

Warner Bros. Shakes Things Up with Dueling Releases on HBO Max and Theaters for 2021

Warner Bros.

It was going to eventually happen but COVID has sped things up as Warner Bros. is making an earthshaking move when it comes to movie distribution. The studio will send 17 films to HBO Max for 31 days, to be released the same day as theaters.

Wonder Woman 1984‘s HBO Max and theater release on Christmas day was just the tip of the iceberg as more are to come.

The studio’s 2021 slate includes The Suicide Squad, The Matrix 4, Dune, Godzilla vs. Kong, and Space Jam: A New Legacy. Other films include Little Things, Judas and the Black Messiah, Tom & Jerry, Mortal Kombat, Those Who Wish Me Dead, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, In The Heights, Reminiscence, Malignant, The Many Saints of Newark, King Richard, and Cry Macho.

The decision will cause an uproar from theater owners who not only lose in this model but are struggling, and will struggle, to stay open due to the pandemic. The decision, according to reports, was not shared with exhibitors and was kept secret at Warner Bros. The studio will likely need to renegotiate with theater chains and offer up something so to as not completely lose their support.

But, something needed to be done. With a still unknown future and COVID vaccination likely to take most of 2021 the release schedule would be shaky and risky to rely just on theaters. Further delays would hurt the entire industry further creating a backlog of productions and likely cutting numerous projects as held up films would take up future release dates creating a ripple effect.

Ann Sarnoff, chair and CEO, WarnerMedia Studios and Networks Group said:

We’re living in unprecedented times which call for creative solutions, including this new initiative for the Warner Bros. Pictures Group. No one wants films back on the big screen more than we do. We know new content is the lifeblood of theatrical exhibition, but we have to balance this with the reality that most theaters in the U.S. will likely operate at reduced capacity throughout 2021. With this unique one-year plan, we can support our partners in exhibition with a steady pipeline of world-class films, while also giving moviegoers who may not have access to theaters or aren’t quite ready to go back to the movies the chance to see our amazing 2021 films. We see it as a win-win for film lovers and exhibitors, and we’re extremely grateful to our filmmaking partners for working with us on this innovative response to these circumstances.

WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar added:

After considering all available options and the projected state of moviegoing throughout 2021, we came to the conclusion that this was the best way for WarnerMedia’s motion picture business to navigate the next 12 months. More importantly, we are planning to bring consumers 17 remarkable movies throughout the year, giving them the choice and the power to decide how they want to enjoy these films. Our content is extremely valuable, unless it’s sitting on a shelf not being seen by anyone. We believe this approach serves our fans, supports exhibitors and filmmakers, and enhances the HBO Max experience, creating value for all.

Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich also said:

This hybrid exhibition model enables us to best support our films, creative partners and moviegoing in general throughout 2021. We have a fantastic, wide-ranging slate of titles from talented and visionary filmmakers next year, and we’re excited to be able get these movies in front of audiences around the world. And, as always, we’ll support all of our releases with innovative and robust marketing campaigns for their theatrical debuts, while highlighting this unique opportunity to see our films domestically via HBO Max as well.

The films will roll at internationally as planned and the decision is focused on the US audience.

From The Suicide Squad to Peacemaker, John Cena and James Gunn Head to HBO Max

John Cena Peacemaker

With so many big names, it’s not surprising that The Suicide Squad is getting spin-offs. HBO Max has gone straight to series for “Peacemaker.” Played by John Cena, the character is one of the members of the Suicide Squad that will be featured in director/writer James Gunn‘s The Suicide Squad. Gunn will write the series and direct multiple episodes including the pilot.

The series has been ordered for eight episodes and is based on the DC Comics character. The series has been described as an adventure/comedy but the plot is being held tight.

In the teaser video for The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker is described as a “douchey Captain America” by Cena. He’s a man that believes that peace can be achieved at any cost and that includes the body count.

Peacemaker was originally owned by Charlton Comics and was created by Joe Gill and Pat Boyette. He debuted in Fightin’ 5 #40 in November 1966. DC acquired the character in the 1980s and published a four-issue series in 1988. One of the character‘s identities, Christopher Smith, was mentioned in the DC television series Black Lightning. Smith is the version that Cena plays in the film and upcoming television series but it is unknown if it’s the same character from Black Lightning. With DC focused more on merging their television and film worlds, there is a chance.

The series will begin production in 2021 and will be before Gunn pivots to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for Marvel.

The Suicide Squad is currently set to be released August 6, 2021.

Earlier this year it was announced that The Batman will also get an HBO Max spinoff series focused on the Gotham PD. It’s a sign that Warner Bros. and their parent company ATT are much more focused on cross-platform media tie-ins leveraging all of their distribution platforms and channels.
