The Principles of Necromancy introduces an intriguing new villain in Doctor Eyes

To see Jakob Eyes – or truly any Doctor – is to know fear, even if you are injured – for a Doctor is mercurial and can act in ways mere humans cannot understand. They are the mad scientists of this horrifying kingdom… and this story is about the one that even other Doctors learn to fear. A man who seeks to make death irrelevant and looks upon his calling with a kind of mad glee. A man who can rebuild people like they were machines… and combine them just as quickly. Doctor Eyes won’t just fix a person… he will make them magnificent!

All is lost. Disgraced and destroyed, the former Doctor Jakob Eyes now sits at the feet of the City King as a servant and a fool. Everything he has worked for is in ash. His every possession has been taken. Necromancy has been all but erased from history before it even had its day in the sun. But Eyes still has one thing: his principles.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Doom #1

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Batman/Dylan Dog #3 (DC Comics) – The team-up has been fantastic so far and just a hell of a lot of fun to read.

Doom #1 (Marvel) – Doom must save the Marvel Universe from Galactus!

G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero #306 (Skybound) – The series has been fantastic so far as three factions have been testing each other out and where this is going is all a guess.

Principles of Necromancy #2 (Magma Comix) – The debut issue was an interesting horror comic that has us intrigued to see where the second issue is going to go. It feels like it could be a cool anthology series with a connecting story and we’re excited to find out!

Sanction #1 (Mad Cave Studios) – Leningrad, 1987. When a woman’s corpse is discovered on New Year’s Day, a hungover Detective Pavel Smirnoff hands off the case to his partner, Detective Boris Dimitrovich, hoping he’ll close it without fuss. Instead, Dimitrovich uncovers a connection to an old, unsolved crime, dragging them both into an investigation that puts their careers – and possibly their lives – at risk.

Ultimate X-Men #3 (Marvel) – The series has been intriguing so far with a vibe that’s more Junji Ito than traditional X-Men.

Uncanny Valley #2 (BOOM! Studios) – The debut issue was amazing with a Who Framed Roger Rabbit? vibe to it.

The Principles of Necromancy #1 is a solid debut for a series and for Magma Comix

While brave knights and dangerous monsters wage endless war, business is booming for Dr. Jakob Eyes, a traveling physician whose arcane remedies are the closest thing to magic the world knows. These gruesome miracles are only stepping stones for Dr. Eyes’ ultimate ungodly goal: to overcome death itself. And now, a band of decimated barbarians, desperate to bargain for their lives, may just make the ideal next test subjects… The Principles of Necromancy #1 not only kicks off a new series, but a new publisher in Magma Comix.

Mini Reviews: The Principles of Necromancy #1

Principles of Necromancy #1

Sometimes, the staff at Graphic Policy read more comics than we’re able to get reviewed. When that happens you’ll see a weekly feature compiling reviews of the comics, or graphic novels, we just didn’t get a chance to write a full one for.

These are Graphic Policy’s Mini Reviews and Recommendations.

Logan

Principles of Necromancy #1 (Magma Comix) – My first Magma Comix title, and it’s what it says on the tin as well as being completely unexpected. Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, Eamon Winkle, and Jay Fotos spin the saga of Dr. Eyes, a necromancer, who brings back a tribe of nondescript barbarians from the dead/grave injuries in new and more messed up ways. This title is truly Conan meets Cronenberg, and some of Eyes’ inventions are so haunting that the colors drop out, and we’re just left with Winkle’s lovely, twisted line art. Principles of Necromancy #1 is a proof of concept, and I’m intrigued to see what direction future installments go in. Overall: 8.2 Verdict: Buy

The Principles of Necromancy #1 kicks off Magma Comix with some interesting fantasy horror

The Principles of Necromancy #1

While brave knights and dangerous monsters wage endless war, business is booming for Dr. Jakob Eyes, a traveling physician whose arcane remedies are the closest thing to magic the world knows. These gruesome miracles are only stepping stones for Dr. Eyes’ ultimate ungodly goal: to overcome death itself. And now, a band of decimated barbarians, desperate to bargain for their lives, may just make the ideal next test subjects… The Principles of Necromancy #1 not only kicks off a new series, but a new publisher in Magma Comix.

Being the first comic out of the gate for a new(ish) publisher puts extra pressure on it. Not only do you have to get people interested in the series but it also gives hints and clues as to what we can expect from the publisher too. Luckily, The Principles of Necromancy #1 is a solid debut mixing fantasy and horror in a comic that can be enjoyed as a series and a one-shot.

Written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, The Principles of Necromancy #1 is an interesting comic. It’s main character is mysterious, delivering a Faustian bargain for a group of warriors locked in battle. The barbarians are hurting and weakened and that makes them ideal to make a deal. The wheel spun is one that’s unexpected and of horror, going in directions that is unexpected and intriguing.

Dr. Eyes is a strange character who feels like a spin on the classic Cryptkeeper, telling us creepy stories delivering twisted visions. But, this Cryptkeeper is an active participant in the horror.

Eamon Winkle delivers the nightmares with almost glee at times. Dr. Eyes’ excitement at his abominations oozes off the page. With color by Jay Fotos and lettering by Shawn Lee, the visuals of the comic easily blend fantasy and horror for a result that feels new and unexpected in ways. But, most importantly, the sheer terror of what’s happening is front and center. We can see the fear in eyes as what is happening is revealed.

The Principles of Necromancy #1 is a solid start that horror fans should enjoy. The fact that it can be enjoyed on its own is a bonus making it a comic that can be picked up and read or continue on for further twisted visions. It’s also a solid start to the publisher making us even more excited to see what’s next.
