The Occultist Omnibus in April 2018

Rob Bailey is acquiring another magical book with The Occultist Omnibus! In 2010, writer Tim Seeley brought his rare mix of humor, horror, and heroes to Dark Horse’s own Mike Richardson’s magical creation in a popular one-shot, which soon transformed into a popular ten issue, two volume series! Artists Victor Drujiniu, Mike Norton, and Jason Gorder brought Rob Bailey’s adventure to life while colorists Andrew Dalhouse and Allen Passalaqua provide their supernaturally gorgeous coloring skills to the series. The Occultist Omnibus cover is by artist Steve Morris.

The Occultist Omnibus collects The Occultist #1-#5 and The Occultist Volume 2: At Death’s Door #1-#5. The Occultist Omnibus follows college student Rob Bailey after he stumbles upon a magical book that gives him supernatural powers; he gets not only new occult abilities, but also dangerous problems that come with them. A gang of hitman mages are sent by a sorcerer who wants the book for himself, and Rob has to learn the ropes of his new powers fast before they can get to him.

The Occultist Omnibus goes on sale April 25, 2018. The 256-page trade paperback retails for $24.99.

Review: Project Black Sky Sampler

project black sky sampler coverSince my return to regular comic reading I have been seeing these pesky little imprints on comics that look somewhat interesting.  Always printed by Dark Horse, they say “Black Sky Project.”  The problem with me is that I am somewhat of an absolute reader, in that I read absolutely everything or absolutely nothing.  In terms of Project Black Sky, I have never really known where to start, despite the fact that most series are not very advanced, and so I never really did get into any of them.  I would rather start with a #1 and then sort out what I want to read after I have worked my way through the series.  As if Dark Horse was reading my thoughts I discovered that they will be releasing a Project Black Sky Sampler, including the first issues of each of the series under this imprint.

Suffice to say, that for anyone that is curious about any of the series or the overall tie-in that this is an excellent place to start.  Each of the main four main characters was introduced and explained and the plot got going for each of them.  In my opinion, the best was by far Ghost, whose supernatural background does not match my own tastes very well, but whom is well written and well-drawn as well as providing an engaging story from the get-go.   If there is one criticism of this sampler it is that going in that I thought that Project Black Sky would be better explained than it was, as opposed to this being essentially just a collection.  That is likely to be the response of the readers that have already been invested into these series.  This issue is not really for them, unless they are trying to complete a collection.

The overall effect of this release is what it aimed for though, at least in terms of myself as a reader.  While three of the series I am happy to follow in passing, I am likely going to give Ghost a try on a monthly basis, and for anyone interested in a superhero setting outside of the Big Two, they might just find something, or everything, that they are after in this book.

Seeley & Norton Resurrect The Occultist!

Dark Horse Comics has announced that Tim Seeley is returning with his rare mix of humor and horror in the supernatural superhero series The Occultist!

With acclaimed artist Mike Norton on interior art and cover art by Steve Morris, The Occultist will return this fall in the follow-up to its hugely successful 2011 miniseries!

When the Sword, a mysterious book of powerful spells, binds itself to him, the fact that Rob’s life has been falling apart doesn’t seem like such a big deal. To survive, Rob must learn to control the book’s unpredictable magic, while his life slips even further out of control . . .

An evil witch doctor wants the Sword to reject Rob, now known as the Occultist, by deciding that he is a bad host in the ongoing war against the realm of the dead. The solution lies in a Catholic schoolgirl who dabbles in death for a quick high.
