Marvel Ended 2021 with a Surprising Return and Starts 2022 with Another

Darkhold: Omega

Marvel‘s one-shot Timeless wrapped up 2021 with a tease of what’s to come in 2022. The comic teased the return of Marvelman/Miracleman to comics and it looks like the proper Marvel Universe. 2022 kicks off with another return in the pages of Darkhold: Omega.

Darkhold: Omega wraps up the miniseries that had heroes corrupted, led by Scarlet Witch, to take on Chthon. The event has been an interesting one, feeling slightly off due to its delays.

Spoilers Ahead

With the heroes facing Chthon, an energy ball forms with a character inside. The heroes attack the individual not knowing who he is and thinking they’re competition in defeating Chthon (they’re corrupted, roll with it). The mysterious character stops their attack by finds his energy spent and facing Chthon himself who attempts to cross over to Earth when he’s stopped by Scarlet Witch and Doctor Doom.

One of the comic’s endings features Janet Van Dyne confronting the mystery character in Pennsylvania who has crossed over to Earth from Other-Realm.

Who’s the mysterious character?

Omega the Unknown!

Yes, over a decade on the sidelines the classic character is back and what that means is unknown (no pun intended).

Omega the Unknown debuted in March 1976 in Omega the Unknown #1. The character was created by Steve Gerber, Mary Skrenes, and Jim Mooney.

Omega the Unknown #1

Omega is the last remaining member of an alien race and escapes to Earth. The comic also features James-Michael who has dreams and visions he shares with Omega. We find out James-Michael’s parents are robots after an accident where he wakes up later in a private hospital exhibiting a lack of emotion to those events. After being attacked Omega shows up to protect James-Michael and James-Michael eventually shoots bursts from his hands, something Omega has done as well. The series followed the mystery of James-Michael who is fostered by two young women in Hell’s Kitchen and Omega being a hero. What’s the connection between the two?

The series wrapped up after 10 issues leaving a lot of questions unanswered. They were sort of answered in two issues of The Defenders in 1979 written by Steven Grant.

In The Defenders, we learn that Omega and James-Michael are bio-engineered beings engineered by a mechanoid race called the Protars. The Protars decide to create an ideal race of humanoids when they foresee their extinction. At the end of The Defenders, James-Michael destroys himself and Omega is dead after being shot by police in his own series. Basically, the characters were written out of existence by a lot of death.

Last we saw the use of the character was a 2007 10-issue limited series by Jonathan Lethem and Farel Dalrymple that delivered a new take on the character.

In Darkhold: Omega, Omega is referred to as model X3Z, a reference to the previous run which teases what readers should be checking out, his 10-issue series and then the two issues of The Defenders. All of them are available on Marvel Unlimited.

It’s unknown exactly what happened to Omega that he wound up in Other-Realm and it’ll be interesting to see where Marvel takes this one. But, with the return and Miracleman and now this? 2022 is sure looking to be an intriguing year that celebrates and brings back some classics.

Marvel’s Defenders Gets A Vinyl Soundtrack LP from Mondo

This week Mondo presents a limited-edition pressing of John Paesano‘s soundtrack to Marvel’s The Defenders.

As usual, new releases go on sale at NOON (CT) on Wednesdays at mondotees.com.

This limited-series event, several years in the making, finds Marvel’s finest street-level heroes Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist (along with help from various other recurring characters from their respective series) joining forces to take on the sinister organization,The Hand, along with the mysterious yet familiar new recruit (known to them as The Black Sky).

Composed by John Paesano, the score to The Defenders takes his work to another level. Incredibly dynamic, serious yet still fun, and ominous but still optimistic. Paesano takes the musical world of the four separate comic book superheroes, all dealing with their own sonic demons, and produces a seamlessly shared musical universe for them to co-exist.

This limited-edition vinyl release is pressed on 2X 180 Gram vinyl (Disc 1: red/yellow split, Disc 2: purple/green split) and features amazing new collectible artwork by Johnny Dombrowski.

Review: The Defenders #10

Defenders_Vol_5_10

*Minor spoilers ahead*

10 issues of The Defenders? I didn’t think the run would be that short but there you go. Okay yeah, it’s obvious why this was book was greenlit given the then upcoming Netflix show of the same name at the time (both the comic and show were published/uploaded roughly around the same time last year) and both lineups were the same with the team consisting of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. Amusingly, it’s Iron Fist’s recent books that are better than the Netflix show but I digress.

This is the first of the final issues of each comic written by Brian Michael Bendis. Others like Spider-Man and Jessica Jones will follow. And it appears that Bendis wanted the book to be self-congratulatory of sorts because it does feel like he wants to showcase much of what he’s accomplished in over 20 years or so. But it doesn’t feel arrogant, don’t get me wrong. It’s a decent issue that I really, really like. Bendis as a writer, when given the right task than event comics, he can do solid down to earth superheroic plots. And the chemistry between Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist is well done such as the first panel with Jessica, Luke and Rand (Iron Fist) looking over proudly at the newly installed sign for Heroes for Hire so yeah, that’s still going. It’s a nice scene and ended on an amusing note once people walk by.

Despite solid characterization and decent set up for The Hood as the main villain, there is a major flaw with this book; it just ends. That’s it. There’s this whole setup of The Hood being the new Kingpin as well as he plan with the other villains of the Marvel universe and the two final pages or should I say, a two splash page that promises something of a final confrontation and it just ends. Maybe the point is to set up a Heroes for Hire book full time given the amount of heroes but even then, it features characters either created by or who Bendis has written for. It just feels so annoying because it feels like the book got started.

And it’s a huge shame because as I said, Bendis can be a good writer under the correct material and he had something here!

But in any case, Bendis is Bendis with his ups and downs and this is a solid book he’s written despite my main issue. David Marquez‘s art is also solid, good dynamics in regards to the action and facial and physical expressions, they compliment Bendis’s writing well. And colors by Justin Ponsor give it a nice shaded look but not too much. All very well done.

It’s a decent end to The Defenders and whether you like the book or not, you can’t deny he no doubt had fun writing these characters. And if you’ve been enjoying the series so far, maybe you’ll like it fine and hope based on the final splash page, it’ll go somewhere.
