THE DARKNESS: FOUR HORSEMEN #4 coverYesterday, I reviewed Velocity #4, and lamented that the final issue was a bit of a let down after three solid issues.  The Darkness: Four Horsemen #4 was the exact opposite.  The fourth issue is actually higher quality than the first three issues.  You can read those reviews here, here and here.  While I definitely liked the first three issues the fourth has some twists and gets you to reflect on the nature of good and evil.  It’s a great ending for a limited series that was good, but didn’t necessarily needed to be a limited series.

The Darkest Tale of The Darkness Yet!
Apocalypse has come to Ginsberg, CA! Two ominous powers arrive in town, one of ultimate light and the other of deepest darkness, and Jackie Estacado is trapped between them. The Four Horsemen are ascending to their full power. Can Jackie muster the power to prevent the end of the world?
From David Hine (Batman: Arkham Asylum) and up-and-coming artist Jeff Wamester (Frenemy of the State).

Writer David Hine has put together an entertaining limited series.  I’m still scratching my head as to why it couldn’t have been part of the normal run, but it was well worth being told.  While the first three issues were solid, they were pretty straight forward.  This fourth issue puts you on your toes.  Who’s good?  Who’s bad?  And what is good and evil?  It asks those questions and leaves it to you the reader to decide.  For what at first seemed like a simple story throws on the layers towards the end that really sets it apart.

Jeff Wamester‘s art is what I’d expect from a Top Cow book.  It has some great detail and the character design is solid.  How each horseman is portrayed especially stands out.

Overall, while I may question why this needed to be done as a limited series, it’s an entertaining read.  If you’ve picked up the first three, this last issue is definitely worth it, and for those who haven’t, pick up all four issues or definitely grab the eventual trade paperback.

The Darkness Four Horsemen #3The Darkness: Four Horsemen has been a pleasant surprise as far as limited series goes and this third issue stands out from the previous two.  Not only does it feature villains who seem like a match for Jackie and the Darkness but the bad guys aren’t cookie cutter forgettable one dimensional engines of destruction.

For the first time in many, many years, Jackie Estacado, bearer of The Darkness, finds himself fearing for his life. The Demon Riders have taken over Ginsberg and aim to destroy Estacado. Meanwhile, two mysterious beings close in on the town and the countdown to extinction begins!

Written by David Hine the story follows a modern day version of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse who have come in the form of a motorcycle gang.  But we’re also given some reasons to sympathize for their situation as they didn’t want to become what they are.  They’re evil and kill people for their own amusement, but they also seem to go with their fate, playing the rolls they are.  All because they have to, not because they want to.

Overall, this has been an entertaining series.  It’s a nice limited series featuring Jackie and The Darkness.  Did it need to be releaesd as one?  No, it could have been a four issue arc, but it’s nice to see it on the shelves.

Review – The Darkness: Four Horsemen #2

The Darkness: Four Horsemen #2 COVA_stampedThe four horsemen are on the warpath in a small town and Jackie Estacado has to stop them.  This series is so twisted with each depiction of the horsemen just being as depraved as it needs to be.  One had me gagging a bit, and that’s impressive.  It’s brutal but The Darkness: Four Horsemen #2 is a fun read.

Jackie Estacado has arrived in the California desert town of Ginsberg, where Hell has come to Earth. The Demon Riders have brought out the worst in the townspeople and Ginsberg burns. Jackie believes he has faced monsters before, but nothing like this.

The Darkness: Four Horsemen #2 is published by Top Cow, written by David Hine with art by Jeff Wamester.  It picks up from the first one with further descriptions of each horseman’s power and the terror they have been causing on Ginsberg.  And let me say, it’s twisted.  One scene and descsription makes the glutton scene in Se7en look tame.

The issue continues to build the scene for the eventual drag out fight and that’s ok.  Hine’s description of the horsemen is entertaining enough and Wamester’s twisted mind puts it all on paper for us to be repulsed and giggle at the same time.

The Darkness: Four Horsemen #1 COVA_stampedI’ve always been fascinated by outlaw bikers.  I’ve never wanted to be one, but still there’s some weird fascination with them.  So, I was in luck in this four issue miniseries Jackie Estacado must take on the four horsemen in the form of a biker gang.

Jackie Estacado has known little fear since he inherited the power of The Darkness on his 21st birthday. But when an old mafia boss blackmails him to hunt down four fiendish bikers in the California desert, he will find that even The Darkness can know fear.

The Darkness: Four Horsemen #1 is published by Top Cow, written by David Hine with art by Jeff Wamester.  The story is really entertaining and one thing I enjoyed a lot about it is the build up of exactly what these bikers have been doing.  The description of each of their abilities and what they cause is slow and leads up to the obvious reveal.  But it’s still fun to watch how Hine twists famine, war, pestilence and death.

The story is really entertaining and there’s some twists in there that we still get to see how they play out.  We know this’ll build into one hell of a drag out fight but there’s enough there to add in some mystery.  Perfect for new and old Darkness fans alike.
