Review: The Batman Who Laughs #6

The Batman Who Laughs #6,

Intense. That’s the word that best describes The Batman Who Laughs #6, the penultimate issue of this solid miniseries.

Writer Scott Snyder has been building to this moment in this series. The Batman Who Laughs #6 features the confrontation of Batman and The Batman Who Laughs for a hell of a cathartic battle.

There’s an intensity about the comic. It builds as you move along to those final moments which feature a bit of release. This is a perfect example of building the emotional moment and leaving the reader want more.

That emotional ride is helped by Jock whose art with colorist David Baron is amazing. There’s a horror aspect to the design and look of the issue. It goes back and forth between reality and the nightmare vision Bruce/Batman is experiencing as the toxin courses through his veins. As he devolves into his own version of the Batman Who Laughs, we see a distorted world whose horrors would break anyone.

The negative of the comic is the lettering. I’ll admit I read this digitally so have no idea if this is an issue in the print version of the comic. The narrative boxes with red lettering on gray are hard to read at times. I had to blow up the pdf to be able to full read the text and even then I struggled. But, at the same time, Sal Cipriano‘s lettering also captures the madness. It adds character to both Batman and the Batman Who Laughs.

The issue is a solid one leaving me excited to see where the finale takes us and wondering how Batman will win in the end. It’s a prime example of both Snyder and Jock being at the top of their game.

True happiness begins in the heart. Our memories and emotions can play tricks on us, though, and divert one’s reality into something completely different. The Batman Who Laughs has based his entire worldview on this very concept, and it is in this moment that he must finally confront the one man who stands in his way, the one man who could complete or halt his plan…the last Bruce Wayne. It is here, on the home turf of Wayne Manor, that Bruce relives the happiest moment of his life-the moment he became the Batman Who Laughs. Will Batman be able to outthink the Dark Multiverse version of himself and stop his most sinister end? Or will the original Dark Knight succumb fully and let go of his morality? While good almost always wins, this issue is the start of something more…setting up a larger plan based in the ultimate betrayal of infection, loyalty and true happiness. This is not the end…it’s only the beginning.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Banjax #1

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Achilles Inc. #3 (Source Point Press) – The concept of superheroes taking jobs from every day people is intriguing. The layered approach to it is what’s really impressive about this series. Enjoy it for what it is or dive deeper into the political/socio commentary, it’s enjoyable either way.

Banjax #1 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – A superhero has learned he’s dying and goes all out due to it. Yeah, we’re in.

Batman and the Outsiders #2 (DC Comics) – The first issue had some fantastic art and good team dynamic. We want to see where it all goes from there.

The Batman Who Laughs #6 (DC Comics) – We’ve gotten this far. We want to see how the team wraps this one up and brings it all together.

Event Leviathan #1 (DC Comics) – DC’s mini-event kicks off here and already is shaking up the DC Universe. We’re excited to see how this one goes and what it’ll lead to.

Five Years #2 (Abstract Studios) – Terry Moore brings so much of what he’s done together. This is one for the fans of his work and it’s absolutely worth it.

Grumble #7 (Albatross Funnybooks) – What comics should be, pure fun. Grab this entire series.

Jughead Time Police #1 (Archie Comics) – The concept sounds insane. Everything you need to know is in the title. We’re in.

The Ride: Burning Desire #1 (Image Comics) – The series just sounds like solid noir-ish entertainment with a former detective out of prison working as a bouncer with enemies looking to settle a score.

Spencer and Locke 2 #3

Silver Surfer: Black #1 (Marvel) – We’ve read it. It’s fantastic, especially for those who have been reading Donny Cates’ work. Tradd Moore’s art is fantastic too, especially with Dave Stewart’s colors.

Sonata #1 (Image Comics/Shadowline) – Two cultures clash on a planet they each believe is their Promised Land. Nope, no idea what this is alluding to.

Spencer and Locke 2 #3 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – Over the top noir/crime action that lampoons/loves the comics of our childhood.

Trust Fall #1 (AfterShock) – The series mixes superpowers and crime in what sounds like a really intriguing concept. There’s a hook here that’s really unique and stands out. We’re not spoiling it.

Voracious: Appetite for Destruction #2 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – One of the best kept secrets in comics. Start from the beginning (the first volume) or at least the first issue of this series to see what you’re missing. To tell you why would spoil the fun.

The Batman Who Laughs #5

Batman was in a bad position when we last left him as he was surrounded by Arkham guards firing at him as the Batman Who Laughs taunted his every move. This issue has Bruce further falling in to the deep of the toxin in his veins as Gordon must deal with his situation and a decision is made whether to activate the Last Laugh.

The Batman Who Laughs #5 is an interesting issue in that it makes little sense on its own and even as a slice of the bigger picture it still takes a few reads to totally get.

Writer Scott Snyder is clearly not just weaving a miniseries here but has a bigger picture in mind as well. This shouldn’t be too surprising as he has done this before leaving his mark on Batman and the DC Universe as a whole. Revelations here are interesting hinting at some things laid out long ago but where things go from here is the big question. The issue is the revelation one showing us, sort of, what the Batman Who Laughs wants. Whether our Batman will give it to him is another question as Snyder leaves it very nebulous as to what the correct direction to go is.

The art by Jock continues to be great with a mix of action and horror and flowing from one to another. The issue definitely falls more into the horror end of things with this issue as each panel seems to bring a bit more madness to the page. Jock is helped with that by David Baron but it’s Sal Cipriano‘s lettering that really stands out. Not only does he deliver a style that’s so befits the Batman Who Laughs, he also dips into that with our Batman showing the struggle within. The lettering in this case tells a a lot of the story beyond the written word.

The issue doesn’t quite stand on its own but has me intrigued as to where things are going next. As part of a miniseries this far in it’s the reveal to some extent and even with that it still leaves a lot out there. At this point it’ll be interesting to see where the team takes it especially wit the announcement this series would be leading into more to come in the next year.

It’s a battle to the death as Batman goes head-to-head with the Grim Knight! The Caped Crusader is forced to not only fight off the most evil version of himself, but the growing desire to turn his back on his moral code and commit cold-blooded murder. Any other time, Batman would be able to stay on the straight and narrow, but as the Joker serum finally takes over his body, Bruce Wayne may just succumb to pure evil, and kill the Grim Knight. All of this is foreseen by the Batman Who Laughs, who has been planning for the corruption of Bruce Wayne, banking on him activating the “Last Laugh” protocol and turning Gotham City into an incubator for evil. All the Batman Who Laughs needs is one last “Happy Bruce” from another dimension to make his serum work…but only Batman knows where the last Bruce is going to show up.

Copra Vol. 2 (Image Comics) – If you missed this series at its previous publisher, you have no excuse now. It’s so good! Think indie Suicide Squad.

Katusha (Dead Reckoning) – Dead Reckoning has been doing awesome releasing war comics and this one focused on the German invasion of the Soviet Union through a comining-of-age story sounds really interesting.

Metalshark Bro #1 (Scout Comics) – We’ll be honest, we know little about this debut issue but the cover has a shark rocking out with a guitar. Yes please!

Waves (BOOM! Studios) – A graphic novel about the difficulties of pregnancy. An emotional read.

Batman and Superman are Together Again in Batman/Superman Leading to a New “Secret Six”

David Marquez and Joshua Williamson are teaming up to bring Batman and Superman together in the newest volume of Batman/Superman from DC Comics. This is Marquez’s DC debut where he is now exclusive.

The Batman Who Laughs is still terrorizing the DC Universe (his own miniseries is being extended to seven issues from six to lead into this new series) and will be the threat at the center of it all.

Since his debut in Dark Nights: Metal, The Batman Who Laughs has been working on a massive plan that involves sleeper agent heroes he’s infected and slowly turned into evil versions of themselves. Six is key, as in “Secret Six,” the classic team and comic series. Who are they? We’ll find out in the series!

This new series is important as it’ll impact the DC superhero continuity and community over the next year of storytelling.

Find out more about the new Batman/Superman series by Williamson and Marquez in DC’s Year of the Villain #1, on shelves this Wednesday, May 1, 2019. Batman/Superman debuts August 14, 2019.
