Awesome Con 2026: Firefly Animated Series in Development

Firefly character design

After a lot of buildup and teases, Nathan Fillion announced during Awesome Con 2026 that he and 20th Television Animation are in advanced stages of development on a new animated series based on the beloved cult sci-fi franchise Firefly. The reveal came during a panel and live taping of his podcast “Once We Were Spacemen” during Awesome Con in Washington, D.C., where the news was met by a packed, standing-room-only crowd with thunderous applause and enthusiastic cheers.

Fillion made the announcement alongside his former Firefly co-star and podcast co-host Alan Tudyk, joined by fellow original cast members Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau that amplified speculation already building online.

The reveal followed a viral social media campaign featuring a series of cryptic videos starring Fillion and several of his “Firefly” co-stars. In the first clip, Fillion knocks on what appears to be a production trailer door as Torres asks, “Does this mean it’s time?” Fillion responds simply, “It’s time.” Subsequent videos featured Baccarin, Maher, Staite, Glau, Baldwin and Tudyk, which ignited intense fan speculation and generated tens of millions of views across platforms.

Since the videos have surfaced online, they have garnered over 28 million views on various social platforms. The original “Firefly” series has surged to the top of the streaming charts.

The animated reboot is being developed through Fillion’s production banner Collision33 in partnership with 20th Television Animation, which controls the underlying rights to the franchise. The proposed series is set in the timeline between the original 2002 television run and its 2005 feature film continuation, Serenity, expanding the universe while preserving continuity with the established lore.

A script has been completed, and early concept art has been developed in collaboration with the Oscar and Emmy award-winning animation studio ShadowMachine. The fully assembled package is expected to be taken out to buyers shortly.

Married writing-producing team Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters are attached to serve as showrunners, marking their first formal professional collaboration as a duo.

Originally produced by 20th Century Fox Television and created by Joss Whedon, Firefly aired for a single season before developing a long afterlife through DVD sales, streaming platforms, and its theatrical continuation in Serenity. The animated format provides an opportunity to revisit the franchise’s original ensemble dynamics while allowing for expanded storytelling within the established timeline.

Review: Captain Marvel #1

Captain Marvel #1Face front, true believers! The Captain has made her return and oh, how mighty it is. It’s a bold new frontier for Carol Danvers as she soars to new heights in her greatest mission yet—leader of the all-new Alpha Flight space program. Yup, Alpha Flight. As earth’s first line of defense, Carol and her team aim to protect the planet from extraterrestrial threats. But can Carol be a soldier and a diplomat? Especially when an unknown enemy emerges that Carol can’t quite punch.

We’ve known through other series of Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel’s, new status as the head of the space/alien defense force Alpha Flight. It seems to have taken the place of the previous organization S.W.O.R.D. After reading this first issue, that continues to seem like the case.

Written by Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas, the team behind Agent Carter, the first issue is entertaining, but at the same time something feels missing. There’s a lot going for the comic, as it focuses much more on the characters themselves as opposed to trying to dazzle us with tons of action, and that’s the fantastic part about it. But, it’s that focus that also might be its downside. The space action doesn’t feel all that exciting.

The first issue has the team dealing with asteroids and two mysteries, but neither have the build up, or the “threat level” that had me really excited. Much like Carol is dealing with as the head of the new Alpha Flight station, it all feels a bit mundane and boring.

The characters are great though with a fantastic mix of ones that haven’t gotten enough love for some time. Agent Brand is on board, and with the name Alpha Flight, many members of Canada’s super group are on board. One that looks to be taking center stage is Puck who has all sides of his personality shown off, bit of a sexist pig, fanboy, and there’s some sadness there too. Carol spends most of her time debating if her career move is the right one, and then being bored with what that job is. That part is ok as it’s relateable, but also is a bit odd she wouldn’t know what she’s dealing with. A lot of that is played off for laughs, with humor peppered throughout the first issue and used really well.

The art by Kris Anka is solid with some great design of all of the characters. I’m personally digging Puck’s look and the space station has a look that really does put you in awe a bit. It’s supposed to be an amazing structure and it comes off as such. It’s a solid look to it all, but there’s some issues with the space battles where some of what’s going on is lost.

The first issue is a nice start be left me wanting. It’s missing the excitement I was expecting and other volumes gave us, and it’s focus on the boring role Carol has found herself in bleeds off the page in a negative way. Previous volumes have thrown their feminism in our faces, along with action, and this in some ways feels like a dialed back take in both ways. Hopefully, like the latter half of the comic, we get a better mix of action and space station management.

Collider EntertainmentAt the Image panel news broke that Marc Guggenheim is launching an imprint with Image comics.  Collider Entertainment is being launched to bring Hollywood talent to comic books.  The first titles to come from the new imprint is Utopian and The Mission.  Guggenheim is launching the line with producing partner Alisa Tager.

Utopian will be written by Guggenheim and his wife Tara Butters who was a co-creator of the television show Reaper.  The story focuses on a world where evil has been defeated and what super heroes do at that point.

The Mission is being written by RED screenwriters Jon and Erich Hoeber.  The series involves a war between good and evil as an average person is approached by and angel and tasked with killing a person.

The hope is this imprint will open up further Hollywood talent to look past the stigma of comic books and try their talent in this form of entertainment.
