HELLRAISER: BESTIARY #1 (of 6)

Retail Price: $3.99

Authors: Victor LaValle, Ben Meares, Mark Miller
Artists: Colin Lorimer, Carlos Magno, Conor Nolan
Cover Artists: A: Conor Nolan B: Kim Herbst (Incentive) C: Sam Shearon (Incentive)

WHY WE LOVE IT: Over the past three years, Clive Barker has re-imagined the HELLRAISER mythos as only he could, building a long-form narrative that became one of the best-received horror comics in recent memory. Now, the Master of Horror takes us into his Bestiary for an anthology series free of continuity, but full of shocking consequences.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT: HELLRAISER: BESTIARY will pick up where classic horror comics anthologies like Tales From The Crypt, Vault of Horror, and the more recent Flinch left off. And not only will some of comics’ rising stars, such as Ed Brisson (Sheltered), and Michael Moreci (CURSE), get a chance to open the puzzle box in this series, but the first issue features the comics debut of award-winning novelist Victor LaValle (The Devil in Silver, Big Machine).

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: Step into the Bestiary for all-new tales of the LeMarchand Device and its guardians! This first issue contains the start of a six-part serial written by Mark Miller (CLIVE BARKER’S NEXT TESTAMENT) and Ben Meares (HELLRAISER ANNUAL 2013), and drawn by Carlos Magno (DEATHMATCH), where a group of mercenaries are hired to steal Pinhead’s pins. Also, superstar author Victor LaValle teams with artist Colin Lorimer (CURSE) to tell a story set on the outskirts of New York City, as a close-knit community is torn apart by the presence of the puzzle box.

FAIRY QUEST: OUTCASTS #1 (of 2)

Retail Price: $3.99
Author: Paul Jenkins
Artist: Humberto Ramos
Cover Artist: A: Humberto Ramos B: Humberto Ramos B&W (INCENTIVE)

WHY WE LOVE IT: FAIRY QUEST is the passion project of Paul Jenkins and Humberto Ramos, the team behind REVELATIONS and a legendary run on Spectacular Spider-Man. They have put their heart, love, and creative wonder into this groundbreaking series, and we’re excited to explore more of the world of Fablewood!

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT: We all grew up reading fairy tales. We all love fairy tales! But if you enjoy your fairy tales with a twist like Fables, Fairest, or Once Upon a Time, FAIRY QUEST is the perfect series for you. Plus, Paul and Humberto have already made the fans their co-publishers with a successful Kickstarter.

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: The adventures of Red and Mister Woof have only just begun. In Fablewood, all of the stories that have ever been told live side-by-side. But it is an evil place, overseen by the awful Mister Grimm and his cadre of Think Police. Red and Woof want to escape to a world where their friendship isn’t prohibited, but nothing can prepare them for what lies ahead in the Dark Forest.

HEXED #1

Retail Price: $3.99
Author: Michael Alan Nelson
Artist: Dan Mora
Cover Artists: A: Emma Rios B: Dan Mora (INCENTIVE)

WHY WE LOVE IT: DAY MEN. 28 DAYS LATER. DINGO. Besides being one of our favorite writers, Michael Alan Nelson is one of the industry’s preeminent voices in horror, and we couldn’t be happier to be bringing back his fan-favorite creation HEXED for another dive into the depths of the Aether with an ongoing series!

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT: Lucifer is the perfect mash-up of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lara Croft. Plus, HEXED was Pretty Deadly and Amazing Spider-Man superstar Emma Rios’ introduction to the American comics scene back in 2008, and new series artist Dan Mora is poised to continue the trend with his lyrical, horrific, and wholly unique take on Lucifer.

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: Luci Jennifer Inacio Das Neves (most people just call her “Lucifer”) is a supernatural thief-for-hire, stealing wondrous objects from the dark denizens of the netherworld for her mentor/mother figure, Val Brisendine. But when Lucifer accidentally unleashes a terrible evil from one of the paintings hanging in Val’s art gallery, will any of the tricks up her sleeve be enough to stop it?

Interview: Women of BOOM! – Grace Randolph

Supurbia_01_rev_CVRIt’s Thursday which brings us a new interview and our 17th “Women of BOOM!” feature, spotlighting the many kick-ass women that work at BOOM!, Archaia and KaBOOM! We’re focusing on everyone, editors, designers, writers, artists, you name it! We’re making sure to include the hard-working folks whose contributions are often overlooked in the process.

BOOM! (and KaBOOM! and Archaia) has given us unprecedented access and the chance to ask questions to their staff, and creative teams, to find out why the publisher is so successful in hiring women and their experiences in the comic industry as women.

Grace Randolph is a writer and the creator of the excellent BOOM! series Supurbia. She’s also written for the comics Muppet Peter Pan, and Fraggle Rock and is also an avid blogger.

Graphic Policy: How did you get involved in the comic book industry?

GR: I don’t just write comics, I read ’em! Like many comic book readers, ultimately I had a desire to contribute to the medium I enjoy so much. Thus began my letter and email writing campaign to various editors, and it was DC Comics Dan DiDio who gave me my first gig – writing Justice League Unlimited #41.

GP: Did you read comics growing up? Do you read them now?

GR: As a kid, I got into comics via Archie and Uncle Scrooge – both of which I read voraciously! Then, when I started to get annoyed that Archie didn’t simply choose between Betty and Veronica, I knew it was time to move over into mainstream adult comics – DC and Marvel.

GP: How did you come to work with BOOM!/Archaia?

GR: I did some work over at Tokyopop and a few of their editors transitioned over to both companies actually, back when they were separate. I was invited to pitch for the Muppet fairytale line over at BOOM! and Fraggle Rock over at Archaia, and luckily they liked my pitches!

GP: How would you describe your job for people?

GR: Comic books are produced by a group of people working together, which is very important to remember. But the writer is the only one who starts at zero. It’s my job to peer into the darkness and pull out the story, creating the skeleton that the rest of the team will layer their work over. And as a creator, I get to weigh in on those layers as well, which results in what I originally had in mind – but even better thanks to the talented people I’m working with!

GP: For people who want to pursue a career in what you do, what advice would you give them?

GR: Get ready for a long haul. Any kind of career, especially in the arts, takes a long time to establish – not to mention get to a point where you can support yourself financially. Luckily, a career in the arts is usually fueled by passion, and that passion will keep you going during the many, many rough parts.

GP: Did you have a mentor to help you break into the industry? Do you mentor anyone yourself?

GR: As I mentioned above, Dan DiDio got me my first gig and was the first one to believe in my talent as a writer. His assistant at the time, Jann Jones, is the one who told him my spec script was worth reading, and I owe her a lot as well. Plus those editors from Tokyopop who moved to BOOM! and Archaia who agreed to hear my pitches, Paul Morrissey and Tim Beedle. And of course, I’ve learned an incredible amount from working with Ross Richie, BOOM!’s publisher and founder, on Supurbia.

GP: Do you think women have a more difficult time breaking in and making it in the comic industry, if so why? And if yes, how do you think that can be overcome?

GR: Well, there’s a new fad where male comic book readers like to question is women really DO like comics, or if it’s just an act to get attention. It’s true that a small number of women do that, which is unfortunate in and of itself, but even more so because it makes it difficult for true female fans to be involved in the community. And exact same thing goes for female creators. Look, I think it’s amazing that JK Rowling felt – just recently – that she had to initially hide the fact she’s a woman from readers. And even when she published under a pseudonym this year, she picked a man’s name, Robert Galbraith. Women will have more success as creators when consumers are more willing to try their work – who knows when that will happen, or what it will take…

GP: We notice that when it comes to women in the comic industry, BOOM!/Archaia has a lot of diversity present. Why do you think have they succeeded when so many other publishers struggle with this?

GR: BOOM! is very special in that they have tremendous faith in ideas, and in making sure those ideas are realized in tact and to the best of everyone’s ability. That’s very rare in comics, and in any business sadly. So I think the fact BOOM! values ideas means they don’t particularly care who’s head those ideas come from, and that’s great. Favoritism is just as bad as discrimination.

GP: We’ve heard horror stories concerning women in the industry, have you ever seen or been discriminated/harassed and if so, how did you handle it?

GR: I was really disappointed to hear that a number of comic book stores didn’t carry Supurbia, and still don’t, because they felt it was too “girly” or perhaps because it had my name on it, a female name. First off, it’s not girly, and such an assumption means they didn’t even give the title an honest look. Second, for a store to make assumptions about what their readers want and don’t want to read is ridiculous, and quite frankly bad business. Every title should be presented to readers and if they don’t buy it, THEN you can stop ordering it.

GP: What advice do you have for women looking to break into the comic book industry?

GR: Hold your head up high, and let your work speak for you.  Good luck!

Review: Six-Gun Gorilla #1, Supurbia #8, Hypernaturals #12, Suicide Risk #2

Six-Gun Gorilla #1

6GG_01_preview_Page_1Welcome to “the Blister” — a bizarre other-world colonized by humans sometime in the 22nd century, which quickly became a hotly-contested source of fertile land and natural resources long ago exhausted on Earth. In this new frontier, a rogue gunslinger and his companion wander across a wilderness in the grips of a civil war, encountering lawlessness, natives, and perversions of civilization in a world at the crossroads between the past and the future. The fact that said gunslinger is a bio-surgically modified silverback gorilla toting a pair of enormous revolvers is neither here nor there.

Six-Gun Gorilla is a pulpy mash-up of Western weirdness and lo-fi science fiction unlike anything else on the stands. I read the comic and thought about it for quite a while as it really is unlike anything else I’m currently reading. The comic shares more with the British comics of the 80s than today’s stories. And that’s not a bad thing.

It starts off strong with great humor and an interesting world. There’s something that drew me in, just on the weirdness factor alone. Due to that weirdness factor, it does take a bit to get used to the comic, a feeling like I get at times with the British comics of the 80s. So, not shocking for me with this.

For the originality and difference alone the comic is a buy. It definitely isn’t for everyone and for it’s title, there really is little gorilla in this first issue. It’s all set-up in what might be the strangest comic of the year.

Supurbia #8

Supurbia_08_preview_Page_1The Galactic Protection Systems Expo finally comes to its explosive finish… and you won’t believe who’s making the deadly keynote address! Will the Meta Legion be able to save a convention center under villainous assault? And will the housewives in attendance make it back to the neighborhood alive?

On it’s own, this is a hard comic to recommend. It brings together a lot of the plot threads that have been building up for a while now. Because of that, a new reader will have no idea as to what’s going on.

With that being said…..

This comic does exactly what a good soap opera does. After months of set-up it begins to bring together numerous story lines, the big pay off.

And that’s what this comic is, a soap opera in comic form. The plot lines are over the top, the characters are caricatures in a way. And this is all good stuff. I love this series, it’s my version of the daily soaps (and boy do I wish I could get a daily fix).

There’s some action instead of love triangles, but there’s those. There’s shocking twists and turns. Characters you love and love to hate. The series continues to move ahead with it’s fun universe that I want more of.

This issue is perfect for long time readers with some payoff but horrible for new readers. For them, I absolutely going back and starting from the beginning, it’s totally worth it.

Hypernaturals #12

hypernaturals #12 coverWith the entire Quantinuum’s fate hanging in the balance, the Hypernaturals must make the ultimate sacrifice — but who will step up to the plate? And who will try to stop them?

Find out here, in the final issue of The Hypernaturals!

I love the sci-fi that comes out of the minds of Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. With the world of the Hypernaturals, they crafted a world from scratch, one that was entertaining and had so much potential. Unfortunately it looks like with this issue, it’s final, that world is coming to an end.

While the twelve issues are far from perfect, they were original and solid sci-fiction material mixed with superheroes. The characters, their powers, the world they functioned in is entertaining and over the twelve issues seemed to grow more and more. It was as much the small details that were fun as the story overall.

And this twelfth issue has a lot to wrap up. It needs to explain what’s going on, fix the issue with the Quantinuum, take care of the bad guys. A tall order for one issue. And the comic pulls it off, but does come off as rushed. There’s a lot to cram in there, so some plot lines get the short end of the stick. But, things are wrapped up and done so nicely.

I’m hoping that, while this is the end to this particular story, it isn’t the end for this world and we get a second volume. There’s just too much solid material here to not explore. While this final issue wrapped up a lot, it also opened up so much more that is too good to be left on the shelf to gather dust.

Suicide Risk #2

SuicideRisk_02_preview_Page_1After barely surviving a super-powered bank heist gone horribly wrong, beat cop Leo Winters vowed to try and find a way to stop them. Following a lead, he discovered two lowlifes who seemed to be able to grant a person powers… for the right price. Thing is: you don’t get to choose which power. It’s seemingly random, a crap-shoot, a risk. And now Leo will find out just how big of a risk he took…

Suicide Risk is a high octane, mind-bending exploration of what it means to be a hero. So far it’s taken a lot of the themes and issues we might see in the various cop driven television shows and mixes it with the superhero genre. That’s a cool mix as I’m a fan of both (shocker I know).

What’s really nice is the series so far in it’s two issues has focuses on Leo and his family. It really takes a look at how his decision(s) and his job affects not just him, but also his family life. You can see the stress on him, but he’s not in a bubble and that stress flows over onto his family as well. Something that’s often overlooked in comics.

There’s also some small details that are fantastic. Leo now has some powers after his decision of the first issue and he has to learn to use them. And for a bit there it has you going as to how it’ll all impact his life. Could his powers also kill him? It had me going for quite a while and the issues he must deal with while “learning” about his new life is entertaining.

I’m hoping as the series moves on we get more of the impact of decisions on Leo and his family life and it doesn’t turn in to just another superhero comic.

I’m looking for Southland with a superpower spin, and this might just pull that off if the first two issues are any indication.

Picks of the Week: Superman Unchained #1 and 9 other Choices

superman unchained #1 coverI’ve been a bit down on Superman since the launch of DC’s New 52. In general, I think the existing series lack something, though not quite sure I can put my finger on it. Some writing is just incomprehensible and others lack the wonder and excitement I’m looking for. That’s why I’m intrigued by Superman Unchained #1 from the team of writer Scott Snyder and artist Jim Lee. That team alone makes this a “buy” and one of the highest profile comics this week, probably this month.

With it being Superman’s 75th anniversary and a new movie out this week. I’m crossing my fingers this is the Superman comic I’ve been waiting for from a team I know can turn out amazing stuff.

Checking out my other picks below in alphabetical order.

  • American Vampire: The Long Road to Hell #1 – It’s American Vampire how is that not reason enough to purchase this!?
  • Bravest Warriors #9 – One of the  most consistently funny comics on the market. Great for kids and adults.
  • BubbleGun #1 – Aspen’s latest series is an anime like sci-fi adventure. Cool premise and interesting art.
  • Ghost Town #1 – My favorite so far of Action Lab’s Danger Zone line. The concept is terrorists with the ability to time travel.
  • Six-Gun Gorilla #1 – Simon Spurrier + BOOM! = awesome!
  • Supurbia #8 – It’s super heroes mixed with a soap opera and it is fantastic.
  • Thor: God of Thunder #9 – Easily one of the best Marvel NOW! series. Not great for new readers, but an amazing story. Definitely should be read from the first issue.
  • Thumbprint #1 – Joe Hill’s latest comic series!
  • The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys #1 – Gerard Way’s latest comic series!
