The breakout thriller series Stray Dogs by Tony Fleecs and Trish Forstner is ahead of the pack when it comes to fan enthusiasm and has sold out yet again at the distributor level. Image Comics will unleash a reprint of the second issue in order to keep up with the dogged customer demand.
In Stray Dogs #2 something doesn’t smell right. None of the dogs know what happens behind that door at the end of the hallway. All they know is there’s a punishment for sniffing around it. What secrets are hidden in the Master’s Forbidden Room?
Stray Dogs is a five-issue, Don Bluth-style mystery/horror miniseries best described as Lady and the Tramp meets Silence of the Lambs.
Stray Dogs #2, second printing (Diamond Code FEB219069) will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, April 28.
The first issue of Stray Dogs was fantastic delivering a familiar mystery but in a way and from a perspective that’s so new and different. Stray Dogs #2 continues to build on the mystery of what happened to Sophie’s owner all in Don Bluth style visuals.
Written by Tony Fleecs, Stray Dogs #2 is an interesting comic that delivers fear and emotion in unexpected places. The readers can feel for Sophie who feels lost and at the same time something bad has happened. It’s an interesting story in that it’s a murder mystery from a dog’s perspective but it also delivers characters readers can connect to. Every dog has a very distinct personality but it’s Sophie and her new friend Rusty that stand out. Sophie is scared in an unknown place and wants to find out the truth. It also happens Sophie has a horrible memory. Rusty is her one real friend in the bunch and so far has shown a friendship so many long for.
But what Fleecs does that’s truly amazing is keeps the readers guessing. It’s not clear as to what has happened to Sophie’s former owner. Was she murdered? Is Sophie living with the murderer? Is there something else going on? Fleecs teases just enough to keep readers guessing. It also helps build the creep factor into it all.
That’s helped by the art of Trish Forstner. Along with color by Brad Simpson, layouts by Tone Rodriguez, and work by flatter Lauren Perry, the series looks like classic animation, a beautiful almost innocent style that belies the more sinister undertones. Looking at these cute dogs and their antics, you almost forget it’s possible they’re living with a serial killer. The art style disarms the readers in some ways. The art also helps drop Fleecs’ hints. You’re forced to linger on pages and panels looking for the clues as to what has happened.
Stray Dogs #2 is another solid issue that builds upon the mystery. It teases hints and answers but leaves readers guessing. It also builds a dread throughout that you’re not quite sure about. A fantastic series with a familiar concept but a whole new perspective.

Alien #1 (Marvel) – The classic property comes to Marvel! The publisher has done amazing stuff when it comes to expanding the world of Star Wars and we’re hoping for the same here.
Allergic (Graphix) – Maggie wants a pet to play with. Unfortunately, she’s allergic to anything with fur!
Carnage: Black, White, and Blood #1 (Marvel) – The various “color” comics coming out have been solid and we’re excited to check out a new one.
Harley Quinn #1 (DC Comics) – A new volume kicking off from Future State. That mini-event had a great take on the character and we’re hoping this continues that direction.
Morrison Hotel (Z2 Comics) – The influential band gets an anthology focused on their impact and the lore about them.
Rabid World #1 (Scout Comics) – A rabies-like disease has broken out around the world. This is a story of two couples, one trying to survive and the other trying to save the world.
The Recount #3 (Scout Comics) – The series has been amazing so far following the follow out of a corrupt President and those rising up to exact vengeance against anyone that supported him.
Shadow Doctor #2 (AfterShock) – The true story about a Black doctor in the 1930s who turned to the mob to get the money he needed to start a practice.
Stray Dogs #2 (Image Comics) – The first issue was fantastic. A small dog winds up in a new home not knowing how they got there. Flashes of their former life hint at murder. It’s an interesting series, a noir murder mystery from the perspective of a dog.
Teen Titans Academy #1 (DC Comics) – The Teen Titans decide to train and teach the next generation of heroes. But, we know the possible deadly future that is ahead for them.
Image Comics will participate in Free Comic Book Day 2021—Saturday, August 14—again this year with two special offerings—Lady Mechanika by Joe Benitez and Stray Dogs by Tony Fleecs and Trish Forstner.
New readers interested in testing out the long-running, bestselling steampunk action of Lady Mechanika won’t be disappointed by this action-packed freebie issue. Crossover #4 (Image Comics) – The series started off as “spot the comic reference” but it has shifted into an interesting story about xenophobia, immigration, and more.
Frank at Home on the Farm #2 (Scout Comics) – The first issue was full of mystery and we’re excited to see where this series goes because we’re honestly not sure!
Girl Haven (Oni Press) – Koretris is a haven for girls where no men or boys are allowed. When Ash, a boy, is sent there by a spell a whole bunch of questions are raised. Read our review.
I Breathed a Body #2 (AfterShock) – The first issue was an intriguing mix of horror and commentary about social media and we want to see what else it has to say.
Kaiju Score #4 (AfterShock) – This heist comic during a Kaiju attack has been fun so far but how else can things go wrong and what other double-crosses are left? We want to find out!
Marvel’s Voices: Legacy #1 (Marvel) – An impressive group of creators come together for this themed anthology. We’re always fans of seeing how different creators handle characters and checking out new voices.
Nailbiter Returns #10 (Image Comics) – The second volume of the horror series wraps up and it’s a bloody doozy.
Nuclear Family #1 (AfterShock) – Based on Philip K. Dick’s short story Breakfast at Twilight, the series is Cold War era science fiction that we’re excited to read.
Paranormal Hitmen #1 (Behemoth Comics) – Two hitmen are hired by a Government agency to hunt and kill ghosts but also need to deal with the mobsters after them.
Savage Circus #3 (Heavy Metal) – The issue begins the pivot from the first two issues of setup getting ready for the action to come. It’s so great and entertaining, read our review!
Stray Dogs #1 (Image Comics) – A suspense thriller starring dogs!? Yeah, we’re intrigued by this one.
Two Moons #1 (Image Comics) – A Pawnee man fighting for the Union during the Civil War discovers horrors worse than combat.
Warhammer 40,000: Marneus Calgar #5 (Marvel) – The miniseries wraps up as Calgar takes on the Chaos forces!
In September it was announced that the upcoming comic series Stray Dogs by Tony Fleecs and Trish Forstner had been optioned by Paramount Animation. But, the comic hadn’t really been announced at that point and details were scarce. With a press release today, we now know the five-issue series debut, Stray Dogs #1, will be released by Image Comics in February 2021.
As the mystery unfolds over each issue of the comic book series, fans will be treated with special Horror Movie homage variants that feature a canine spin on the iconic imagery. The first, of course, will be a nod to Silence of the Lambs.

She doesn’t recognize any of these other dogs. She knows something terrible happened, but she just…can’t…recall…WAIT! Where’s her lady? Now Sophie has to figure out where she is, what’s happening, and how she’s going to survive this.
Stray Dogs #1 will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, February 17.
Though the comic’s details are hush hush, Stray Dogs by Tony Fleecs and Trish Forstner has been grabbed by Paramount Animation.
The horror comic is getting a script by Mark Perez with Gary Dauberman‘s Coin Operated producing.
Perez has written such films as Herbie Fully Loaded, Accepted, and Game Night among others. Gary Dauberman is a horror vet having directed Annabelle Comes Home and was the executive producer on the recent Swamp Thing television series.
Fleecs and Forstner have worked together previously on IDW Publishing’s My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic comic series.
Stray Dogs will be released in 2021 by Image Comics and is described as “Silence of the Lambs meets Lady and the Tramp.”
Expect the news to boost orders when they finally go live based on the news of a film in the works.
