Oni Press Announces Oni Games

The comic publisher Oni Press is branching out with the launch of Oni Games, a new gaming imprint dedicated to bringing Oni Press titles to the growing tabletop market.

With the response to Renegade Game Studios’ Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Card Game based on the graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O’Malley and designed by Keith Baker, the positive critical and fan response to the recently launched Dead of Winter comic series based on Plaid Hat Games’ hit board game, as well as our previous collaboration with Pinnacle Entertainment Group in bringing Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt’s The Sixth Gun to the Savage Worlds role-playing system, Oni Press felt it was time to capitalize on the momentum for a more official entry into the world of gaming.

The focus of the Oni Games imprint will be on partnering with both new and veteran game designers and established game publishers to bring the unique characters and vibrant worlds of their original creator-owned comics to the world of games.
Joining Oni Press to help manage this initiative is industry veteran Steve Ellis. Ellis has worked in the gaming industry across a variety of capacities for almost 20 years, including retail as the founder and owner of Rainy Day Games, and a long list of credits in game design and development on projects like Dicey Goblins, the Trains series, and many others.

The summer heat pushes the temperature to unbearable heights during the day. The nights are even worse– for the streets are haunted by strange, unnatural creatures. And even as Macgregor works to uncover the truth about the creatures, he struggles to keep his own supernatural nature a secret.

The Super Genius editions will be larger than the previous Zuda Comics print edition and will present the landscape formatted series in a removable slipcase that allows it to be racked vertically, maximizing its visibility for retailers and consumers.

All three volumes of High Moon will be published in hardcover at $24.99 and simultaneously in paperback at $14.99. High Moon: Bullet Holes and Bite Marks will be available in bookstores and comic book stores across the United States and Canada on October 17th, 2017.

Review: Convergence: Green Lantern Corps #2

Convergence Green Lantern Corps #2 CoverStarring heroes from Crisis on Infinite Earths! The Green Lantern Corps is revived when Hal Jordan, John Stewart and Guy Gardner power up and race to take on Hercules Unbound and Anti God from the Great Disaster!

The two issues of this Convergence tie-in has mostly focused on Guy Gardner and his issues with Hal Jordan, and some things that happened to him in the past. But, here’s the thing, I read Green Lantern back in the day, I clearly either didn’t read this, or don’t remember the specifics.

Not know those specifics, it took me out of the series, because Gardner’s PTSD just doesn’t quite hit me at all. THe two issues could have dove heavy into covering the PTSD, and focused on the battles less, but this issue we get battles, including Gardner knocking out some dragon like thing with a bat. I think that really says it all. The battle to wrap up the issue goes quickly, and the possibility that team Green Lantern Corps loses

Convergence has been very hit and miss, this one is a miss for me. Ande Parks and Steve Ellis‘ art is good, but can’t save this issue. I mean seriously… he hits a dragon with a bat! Did I mention that’s while riding a motorcycle? It’s fun to look at though.

If you know the history, the issue might be better. It does take us back to a time when the Green Lantern Corps’ human members were rather dysfunctional. We don’t get enough of that though.

David Gallaher and Steve Ellis’ High Moon Returns Online

high-moon-season-1-coverThe popular and pioneering series High Moon by writer David Gallaher and artist Steve Ellis has returned online. The Harvey Award winning webcomic combines the western and horror genres to create a “Stephen King vs. Sergio Leone mash-up” that impressed fans and critics alike when it originally launched eight years ago as part of DC Comics’ initiative ZUDA Comics. The HighMoonComic.com site has launched with the first 8 pages of the story and will now be serialized by Bottled Lightning Inc, the creative studio run by Gallaher and Ellis, with 4 new pages running every Monday. Later this year, the site will debut original content continuing the High Moon saga.

In High Moon, former Pinkerton agent and current bounty-hunter Matthew Macgregor investigates a series of strange happenings in a small Texas town. Drought has brought famine and hardship to Blest. The summer heat pushes the temperature to unbearable heights during the day. The nights are even worse– for the streets are haunted by strange, unnatural creatures. And even as Macgregor works to uncover the truth about the creatures, he struggles to keep his own supernatural nature a secret.

This is the second webcomic to be serialized by Bottled Lightning Inc, following the young adult webcomic The Only Living Boy which launched last year. The series will be available on the new mobile-responsive HighMoonComic.com site, Tapastic and Comixology; readers can support Bottled Lightning via its recently launched Patreon Fan Club.

This is the second high profile series to go from print to digital. It was almost a month ago when it was announced that Brian Clevinger and Scott Wegener‘s Atomic Robo would be switching to digital first, then eventually make it to print as trade paperbacks.
