Stellar Gets a Trade Out January 2019

Writer Joseph Keatinge and artist Bret Blevins will release a trade paperback collection of Stellar—created by Robert Kirkman and Marc Silvestri—this January from Image Comics and Skybound Entertainment.

Taken as a child, Stellar was transformed into the ultimate weapon, one that would end an intergalactic war. She succeeded…at everything except finding peace. Now she’s a bounty hunter, scouring the worlds she’s broken in a search for redemption. But there are other weapons loose in the galaxy, and some just can’t leave the war behind them.

Stellar hits comic book stores on Wednesday, January 16th and bookstores on Tuesday, January 23rd.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors are choosing up to five books and why they’re choosing the books. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Hawkman #1 (DC Comics) – After a high profile in Dark Nights: Metal, we’re intrigued to see where DC takes this classic character.

The Magic Order #1 (Millarworld/Netflix/Image Comics) – A new series from Mark Millar and the first original since his deal with Netflix. We’re anticipating to see what he’s come up with.

Marvel Rising Alpa #1 (Marvel) – It feels like Marvel’s attempt to recreate DC’s success with their DC Super Hero Girls line and we’re totally fine with it. Bring it.

Oblivion Song #4 (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics) – Have you been reading this series? It’s a fantastic layered story that reflects upon the real world.

Plastic Man #1 (DC Comics) – Gail Simone steps in to take on the character in this entertaining start. Backed up by art by Adriana Melo the first issue is a perfect blend of humor, noir, and superheroics.

Skip to the End (Insight Comics) – Like music? Like comics? Then get this collection of the series that blends the two and is a love letter to Nirvana.

Stellar #1 (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics) – A new series from Skybound written by Joseph Keatinge and art by Bret Blevins. It’s a sci-fi adventure featuring a bounty hunter and since it’s Skybound, we’re expecting entertainment.

Thor #1 (Marvel) – We’ve read it and the epic continues. And it is epic and it is amazing. The “first” issue picks up the ongoing narrative of Jason Aaron but is also accessible for new readers as well.

Transformers: Lost Light #18 (IDW Publishing) – Where is it all going!? We want to know!!!!

Weatherman #1 (Image Comics) – After committing a terrorist act that wipes out almost the entire population of Earth, Nathan goes on the run. But did he commit the crime? The concept is interesting but it’s the creative team of Jody LeHeup and Nathan Fox that has this as a must read.

But there are other weapons loose in the galaxy, and it seems they just can’t leave the war behind them.

This June, Stellar will transport you to another dimension—one filled with crashed spaceships, fast-talking aliens, and ageless wonders.

Review – Pilot Season: Stellar #1

Pilot Season: Stellar COVA_stampedTop Cow‘s Pilot Season takes a bunch of concepts and produces one shots, allowing the public to vote as to witch they want see turned into a mini-series.  Stellar #1 is the latest from Robert Kirkman, Marc Silvestri and Bernard Chang.

Stellar is one of five genetically-enhanced super-humans created by the government of Earth. The process used on her has made her toxic to other humans and drove the other four volunteers insane.  Banished from Earth, Stellar now roams the cosmos trying to use her powers for good, haunted by the fact that she can never return home and all to aware that her fellow super-humans are out there, eager to strike at any moment.

There’s a lot I liked about the first issue and some I didn’t.  The concept of a super human who’s become toxic to other humans and attempts to use their power for good is a great concept.  The inability to touch another person and redemption are two ideas that could make a powerful series and of what we see of that, it works quite well.

The issue is, with one issue you need to put it all out there and towards the end we’re teased with the usual “action” trappings.  A fight is teased and what could be a great deconstruction of super heroes and the isolation they face due to their role is dragged down in those last few panels to the usual action and fight sequences.

There’s a lot of potential here though, and I’d be interested in seeing what direction Kirkman would take and what he could pull off in a mini-series.  The one shot as a series is very intriguing.
