Mini Reviews: Strange Things, Static Returns, Miracleman, and more!

Static: Shadows of Dakota #1

Sometimes, the staff at Graphic Policy read more comics than we’re able to get reviewed. When that happens you’ll see a weekly feature compiling reviews of the comics, or graphic novels, we just didn’t get a chance to write a full one for.

These are Graphic Policy’s Mini Reviews and Recommendations.

Logan

Stranger Things: Tales from Hawkins #1 (Dark Horse) – The first issue of this new anthology style Stranger Things miniseries from Jody Houser, Caio Filipe, and Dan Jackson focuses on the stories of the regular citizens of Hawkins, Indiana while all kinds of dimension spanning, monster fighting shenanigans are going on in the main plot of the Netflix show. Tales from Hawkins #1 is about two hunters in the woods who end up becoming the hunted and shows how hapless the town would be without the help of a telekinetic preteen, some resourceful kids/teens, and an undaunted sheriff. I love how Jackson varies his color palette from autumn Midwest to utter hopelessness and Filipe’s layouts show off the speed and danger of the Demogorgon. However, the two leads of the story are pretty unremarkable and don’t get much characterization so their dark ends ring hollow even with a surprise cameo at the end. Overall: 6.4 Verdict: Pass

Know Your Station #3 (BOOM! Studios) – Other than the social commentary (Rich people are Karens, especially in space), in Sarah Gailey’s script and the gorgeous and gruesome art and colors from Liana Kangas and Rebecca Nalty, I enjoy Know Your Station because it isn’t afraid to take a beat and zero in on its key characters while the billionaire bodies pile up in the spaceship. Protagonist Elise confides with definite red herring Marin about the communication issues onboard and the graphic, artistic manner of the rich board member’s deaths. But more importantly, she opens up about her imposter syndrome and addiction revealing that she had no formal investigative training and was just going to be a dish washer on board the ship. Gailey and Kangas create a real bond between Marin and Elise as they get know each other on a deeper level until shit hit the fans in a final day-glo page. If you like procedurals/mysteries, but aren’t into cops, Know Your Station is definitely worth a reading. Overall: 8.3 Verdict: Buy

Static: Shadows of Dakota #1 (DC Comics/Milestone) – Vita Ayala and Nikolas Draper-Ivey are back with another high energy Static mini that features glorious action sequences, a look into how Virgil Hawkins helps his community out of costume, and introduces a truly unsettling villain. Draper-Ivey continues to be one of the most interesting artists in superhero comics with his manga influences shining through in emotional scenes like when Static talks to a Bang Baby who’s being chased by Feds and accidentally blows up a city street. And speaking of explosions, Nikolas Draper-Ivey brings a kind of freeze frame effect to the more epic moments of each fight or when Ebon is reaching into a Bang Baby hunter’s brain. Finally, I like that Ayala and Draper-Ivey intersperse quiet scenes between the high octane fights on city streets like when Virgil feeds an unhoused lady and tells off some cops who are rude to her, or when he reflects on the damage his battles do while watching his mom and sister do their EMT work. Overall: 8.8 Verdict: Buy

Miracleman: The Silver Age #4 (Marvel) – In keeping with the Miracleman tradition, Miracleman: The Silver Age #4 features a 16 page lead story plus a reprint of a Young Miracleman story from the Mick Anglo that ties into what’s going on in the lead story from Neil Gaiman, Mark Buckingham, Jordie Bellaire, and Todd Klein, whose letters do a fantastic job conveying the tone of the dialogue. Plus he gets to riff on family Bibles in the opening scene which shows worshipers at the Church of Miracleman. (It’s sparsely attended.) In keeping with the themes of the series, Gaiman and Buckingham go psychological instead of physical, especially in conversation between Tom Caxton (Formerly Mister Master) and Young Miracleman talking about how what he’s going to do with his life after being the top superhero after Miracleman. Buckingham’s double page spreads combined with small grid panels make the comic seem both epic and intimate. There are worlds between Young Miracleman’s journey to find himself in the Himalayas and the maneuverings on Olympus and especially the Kirby-esque Black Warpsmiths. Reprint pages aside, Miracleman: The Silver Age #4 is an inviting blend of a coming of age story featuring Young Miracleman and a bigger picture plot about a utopia starting to show its cracks. The Warpsmiths are right ; something is definitely off on Earth. Overall: 8.1 Verdict: Buy

Static: Shadows of Dakota #1 (DC Comics/Milestone) – A fantastic start to the second volume of the series that picks up right after the first ended. With new threats looming the issue acts as both a solid way to catch up on what has happened and also lead into what’s to come. The art is top notch with pages that’ll leave you lingering. This is a hell of a start to the series that shouldn’t be missed. Overall: 9.0 Verdict: Buy

Plush #3 (Image Comics) – The series continues its twisted ways as we learn more about the cannibal furries. That alone should really tell you everything you need to know. The art is great. The writer is wtf funny. It’s such an oddity and it’s fantastic. Overall: 8.5 Verdict: Buy

Zombicide: Day One #1 (Source Point Press) – While I know of the board game, I’ve never played it so I’m sure I’m missing some details in the comic. But, from what I know of it, it captures a lot of what people seem to enjoy about it, especially its characters that are full of personality. There’s something fun wit the debut that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Overall: 7.75 Verdict: Read

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Monarch #1

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

A Home Without (Northwest Press) – An autobiographical graphic novel about a boy growing up in the Bible Belt of the 1980s.

Bishop: War College #1 (Marvel) – Bishop is leading and teaching a new team!

The Exiled #1 (WhatNot Publishing) – Wesley Snipes doing a comic. Nuff said.

Harrower #1 (BOOM! Studios) – A new horror series from Justin Jordan and Brahm Revel that sounds like a nice throwback to slasher/horror films of the 70s and 80s.

How I Became a Shoplifter #1 (Sumerian Comics) – A year by year look at the final generation of juvenile delinquents before technology took over. The concept sounds really intriguing.

I Am the Law: How Judge Dredd Predicted Our Future (Rebellion/2000AD) – Blending comic book history with contemporary radical theories on policing, I Am The Law takes key Dredd stories from the last 45 years and demonstrates how they provide a unique wake up call about our gradual, and not so gradual, slide towards authoritarian policing.

Marry Me a Little (Graphic Mundi) – Recounting same-sex marriage before the Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges made gay marriage the law of the land.

Monarch #1 (Image Comics) – Growing up in the city of Compton is tough enough as it is, but as Travon has learned all too well, growing up as an orphan in the city of Compton with gang members hunting you down every day is even tougher. But all of that is about to change, because today is the day that aliens make first contact with Earth-and it only spells doom for life as we know it! Read our glowing review here!

Red Goblin #1 (Marvel) – Normie Osborn gets his own symbiote. We’re hoping this isn’t the expansion of too many symbiotes again but it’s clearly leading somewhere.

Saga of a Doomed Universe #3 (CEX Publishing) – In 1984, the unlikeliest heroes emerge at the world’s end: a memory-powered loser named Super-Sleuth and the often-held-hostage heroine, Psionica. Reality itself is now threatened!

The Secret History of Black Punk: Record Zero (Silver Sprocket) – An illustrated roll-call for punk, post-punk, hardcore, no wave, and experimental bands from ground zero until now.

Space Job #1 (Dark Horse Comics) – After five long years of soul-crushing servitude as a chef’s assistant, Danny Sheridan is getting his dream job in space as First Officer aboard the SS George H.W. Bush. But on his first day he finds himself crashing back to reality. Nothing seems right. We’re intrigued by this one.

Spy Superb #2 (Dark Horse Comics) – Matt Kindt alone sells this one for us but the first issue was amazing. The series is about spies so perfect, they don’t realize they’re spies!

Static: Shadows of Dakota #1 (DC Comics/Milestone) – Static is back! The second season kicks off here as a new threat lurks in the shadows!

Storm and the Brotherhood of Mutants #1 (Marvel) – A “Sins of Sinister” series. The debut was solid and Storm leading a resistance against Sinister sounds too awesome.

Under the Banner of King Death (Beacon Press) – Set at the pinnacle of the “Golden Age” of Atlantic piracy, this novel follows three unlikely companions, who are sold into servitude on a merchant ship and unwittingly thrust into a voyage of rebellion.

NYCC 2022: Joe Quesada returns, Icon vs. Hardware, John Ridley, and more!

DC‘s Jim Lee & Friends panel at New York Comic Con was full of news and reveals from amazing talent.

Marc Silvestri Talks About Batman’s Ultimate Team-Up

Lee’s longtime creative colleague Marc Silvestri was also on hand to share new art and conversation about his “buddy cop horror story”, Batman/The Joker: The Deady Duo. Silvestri talked to Lee and fans about the early days of pitching and planning the series, how his approach has evolved as both writer and artist from the start until now, why the relationship between Batman and The Joker has captivated fans for so long, and more details about what fans can expect when this seven issue limited series launches November 1, 2022.

Oscar Award-Winning Writer John Ridley – All In On DC

DC is fortunate to have an Academy Award-winning screenwriter on hand that treats his comic writing projects with the same care and commitment that he has with movies like 12 Years A Slave, Five Days At MemorialAmerican Crime, and his other movie projects. Writer John Ridley joined the panel to talk with Jim about his body of work, past and present. Ridley chatted with Lee and the audience about the current and future trajectory of Jace Fox since his move from Gotham to New York (and a sidekick?) in I Am Batman, and how the most recent story arc leads into his upcoming limited series G.C.P.D.: The Blue Wall, debuting October 18, 2022. John also discussed how he landed the job of telling the story of The Penguin, as part of DC’s Batman: One Bad Day event, revealing exclusive first look art from the one-shot ahead of its October 18 release.

Spencer Ackerman – “Building The Wall” in A New DC Black Label Series

For many, the 1990s was a comic book “renaissance,” with the birth of Lee’s own Wildstorm comics, DC’s then-unimaginable Death of Superman, and the creation of Milestone Comics. November’s DC 90’s Rewind event includes the launch of a new WildC.A.T.s. ongoing series, and a new DC Black Label limited series, Waller vs. WildStorm. Co-writer and noted national security journalist Spencer Ackerman appeared on the panel to talk about his first work for DC and how he, co-writer Evan Narcisse and artist Eric Battle plan to merge the DC and Wildstorm universes and show how Amanda Waller rose to power to become one of the most ruthless and unyielding characters in the DCU. Waller vs. Wildstorm debuts November 15, 2022.

Nikolas Draper-Ivey and Vita Ayala Return Static to Dakota in 2023

One of the brightest lights of Milestone Media’s reuniting with DC was Static: Season One, and breakout artist Nikolas Draper-Ivey, who joined the panel to talk a little about the reception that he, writer Vita Ayala and co-artist ChrisCross received after relaunching Milestone’s flagship super hero for a new generation. Fans got to see some of Draper-Ivey’s incredible art, as he spoke about taking on the new challenge of both co-writer (with Ayala) and artist for the six-issue sequel to Static: Season OneStatic: Shadows of Dakota, debuting on February 7, 2023.

Early Look at New Titles Celebrating Milestone’s 30th Anniversary in 2023

Lee’s chat with Draper-Ivey led to more Milestone news, as he shared early reveals of two titles that will be part of the celebration of this groundbreaking imprint’s 30th anniversary next year. Cover art was revealed for Icon vs. Hardware, a five-issue limited series launching on February 14, 2023. Spinning out of the epilogue of the Milestones In History anthology, this series is co-written by Reggie Hudlin and Leon Chills, and pits two of Milestone’s core super heroes against each other for the future of Dakota, as Hardware discovers a time machine and puts it to work altering the history of the world.

Fans also got the first look at the main (by Denys Cowan) and variant (by Nikolas Draper-Ivey) covers for a Milestone 30th Anniversary Special, scheduled for a February 21, 2023 release. This commemorative one-shot will feature stories celebrating the breadth and depth of the Dakotaverse, with contributions from Eisner award winner Chuck Brown, Stephanie Williams, Denys Cowan, Nikolas Draper Ivey, Yasmin Flores Montanez and others. The Draper-Ivey variant cover spotlights the story he’s writing and drawing, a team up between an adult version of Static and Batman Beyond.

Special Guest Joe Quesada Reveals Details on His Return to DC

Even though Jim likes to keep his panel lineup secret to surprise people with big news, he always keeps an ace-in-the-hole extra secret to really catch the audiences off guard. Today was no exception, as artist and former Marvel Editor-In-Chief Joe Quesada took the stage.

Quesada left Marvel earlier this year to pursue his own personal projects and he’s clearly starting off with a bang, as he announced that he’d be designing covers for DC titles in 2023, exclusively revealing his variant cover art for Batman #131 (January 3, 2023), and Batman #132 (February 7, 2023).
