Review: The Antifa Super-Soldier Cookbook

The Antifa Super-Soldier Cookbook

Screaming “Antifa” is the new crying wolf for the right. Anything they don’t like, the term is raised as if it pulls the strings of everything going on. In reality, Antifa is not an organization or a group, it’s simply a short way of saying anti-fascist. If you think fascism is wrong and dislike fascists, you’re antifa. It really is that simple. Matt Lubchansky decides to have some fun with The Antifa Super-Soldier Cookbook that takes us into the battle between those evil antifa and local police.

The Antifa Super-Soldier Cookbook is about Max Marx who gets a big promotion within the group. Marx is upgraded into a supersoldier to battle the police and destroy the American way of life. Standing in the way is Sergeant Paul O’Shea of the Big City PD and right-wing personalities like Adonis Asproulis. Lubchansky has a lot of fun with the concept sending up right-wing fears and probably getting it close to their fantasy of a reality to be honest.

Lubchansky is the Associate Editor of the website The Nib and no stranger to biting political satire. The Antifa Super-Soldier Cookbook is exactly that taking everything to such an extreme it’s hard not to laugh at the absurdity of it all.

The comic is over the top and nails all the talking points and exaggerations that have gone around concerning ANTIFA. Events like the “Battle of Berkley” are given a send-up. From the story, the concepts, to the art, everything is a joke within the comic. But, the jokes have a slight shred of truth to them.

Lubchansky’s story touches upon some of the absurd powers and programs that have militarized the police and increased their aggression. The comic has a hand guide for those new to the subject and is a good place to start.

The Antifa Super-Soldier Cookbook is a solid satire that has fun with the absurd reality some people live in. The disconnect from the truth and reality is there and Lubchansky uses that to have fun making a point at the silliness of it all. The Antifa Super-Soldier Cookbook will deliver laughs for those politically interested and delivers a one-shot comic I hope continues in some way.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

ENIAC #1

Wednesdays (and now Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Allergic (Graphix) – Maggie is getting a new puppy but finds out she’s allergic to anything with fur. This si the mission to find the perfect pet!

America Chavez: Made in the USA #1 (Marvel) – The character takes center stage soon in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe and this series seems to start setting the ground so she does the same in the comic universe as well.

The Antifa Super Soldier Cookbook (Silver Sprocket) – What if everything the Right thought about the Left was real? An ANTIFA operative is about to get an upgrade and become a full-fledged super-soldier!

BRZRKR #1 (BOOM! Studios) – The Keanu Reeves/Matt Kindt written comic series is here. It has a hell of a lot of buzz due to Reeves and brought in a massive amount on Kickstarter. We’re excited we get to finally read it.

Chariot #1 (AWA Studios) – A military weapon in the form of a muscle car. That alone has us in for this.

Crime Syndicate #1 (DC Comics) – We head to a newly returned Earth-3 where these evil versions of our superheroes rule.

Dead Dogs Bite #1 (Dark Horse) – Seeing Tyle Boss’ name on this comic is what first got us to notice it. The story revolves around a missing person in a small town.

Demon Days: X-Men #1 (Marvel) – Peach Momoko’s new twist on the X-Men is here. We were a bit mixed on the initial preview but we’re still excited to check out a full issue. The art alone will be worth it.

ENIAC #1 (Bad Idea) – Bad Idea is officially here! We’ve read this first issue and it’s a solid debut. What does this publisher have up its sleeve? We’re expecting even more news upon release.

Infinite Frontier #0 (DC Comics) – This is the new start to the DC Universe. It’s full of possibilities and the groundwork and tease of what’s to come begins here.

Jonna and the Unpossible Monsters #1 (Oni Press) – Rainbow is looking for her sister Jonna. They’re both trying to survive in a world full of monsters driving humanity to the brink of extinction. Check out our review.

Man-Bat #2 (DC Comics) – The first issue was an intriguing look at addiction and we really want to see if the series keeps up with that theme.

Nocterra #1 (Image Comics) – The Kickstarted graphic novel is out in single issues. The world has been plunged into everlasting night. Meet Val Riggs, a ferryman who transports goods and people along deadly unlit roads.

Suicide Squad #1 (DC Comics) – With a movie out this year, the Suicide Squad is getting a shake-up and a new lineup that matches the film more. The first issue is exactly what you’d want from the series and shows readers to not get too attached to the characters.

The Swamp Thing #1 (DC Comics) – It’s a new Swamp Thing and a new vision for the character. We want to see what this new take is all about.

Transformers: Beast Wars #2 (IDW Publishing) – The cartoon is now a comic with a bit of a remix to it. The first issue set things up and now we’re getting to the good stuff.

Undone By Blood: The Other Side of Eden #1 (AfterShock) – The first series was a solid tale of revenge. We’re just hoping for more of the same.

What Unites Us (:01 First Second) – A graphic novel adaptation of Dan Rather’s essays.

The Antifa Super Soldier Cookbook asks what if everything the right thought about the left was real?

What if everything the right thought about the left was real? Matt Lubchansky explores the idea in The Antifa Super Soldier Cookbook.

Accomplished ANTIFA operative Max Marx is about to get THE big promotion: body augmentation to become a fully-fledged super-soldier in the shadowy organization’s never-ending battle to destroy the police, the American way of life, gender, capitalism, and anything else they decide to deem “fascist.”

The next frontline: internet celebrity and right-wing gadfly Adonis Asproulis is about to give a lecture on the campus of the prestigious Earle University. Adonis could do the impossible: present college students with a debate, ANTIFA’S worst nightmare. Can Max and his comrades get to the university and deplatform him in time? Or can the officers of the Big City PD and newly-promoted Sergeant Paul O’Shea put a stop to it?

The 64 page full-color graphic novel is out March 2021 and retails for $14.99.

Silver Sprocket to Distribute Award-Winning Hazel Newlevant Comics

Silver Sprocket has announced they’re taking over the distribution of Hazel Newlevant’s self-published titles Comics for Choice, Chainmail Bikini, and Sugar Town.

Newlevant is an illustrator and editor formerly of Lion Forge Comics. Their work–which often explores queerness, gender, and relationships–has been recognized by the Eisner Awards, Ignatz Awards, Xeric Grant, and the Prism Comics Queer Press Grant. All three of these books are brilliant examples of the power of self-published comics as well as perfectly suiting the radical do-it-yourself ethos that Silver Sprocket embodies with all of its work.

Comics For Choice is an award-winning anthology of comics about abortion. Cartoonists and illustrators teamed up with activists, historians, and reproductive justice experts to create comics about their diverse personal stories, the history of abortion, the current politics, and more.

Comics For Choice

Chainmail Bikini is an anthology of comics by women and nonbinary people about gaming. 40 cartoonists contributed comics about the games they’re passionate about—from video games to table-top role-playing to collectible card games. Chainmail Bikini explores the real-life impact of entering a fantasy world, as well as how games can connect us and teach us about ourselves.

Chainmail Bikini

Sugar Town is a bisexual, polyamorous love story for the modern era. Hazel is already in a happy relationship when she meets Argent, a dominatrix who’s sweet and tender outside of the bedroom. Sugar Town is a fun, colorful comic about a young woman’s journey through the delights and disappointments of multiple lovers.

Next World Tarot Envisions Revolutionary Love and Justice

Cristy C Road’s Next World Tarot has been celebrated since 2017 for its detailed envisioning of justice, resilience, accountability, and reclaimed magic.

Featuring body outlaws, endangered cultures, and anti-colonial belief systems, the Next World Tarot envisions a world where justice relies on respect and revolutionary love.

The Fool’s Journey is about smashing systematic oppression, owning their truths, being accountable to the people and places that support them, and taking back a connection to their body that may have been lost through trauma or societal brainwashing.

The Next World Tarot is a visual spectacle of both the battle cry and the re-connection between outcasts and their criminalized identities.

The deck will be immortalized this summer as an oversize (9” x 12”) full-color hardcover art book with accompanying essays expanding upon each of the 78 illustrations, in English and Spanish, from radical indie publisher Silver Sprocket.

The Next World Tarot began as a project that would vary in media based on Roads’ time and resources, evolving into a complex series of drawings created with micron and gel pens, markers, white out, and whatever acrylic paint she could get her hands on; illustrated on sheets of bristol vellum paper ranging in size from 11” x 14” and 18” x 26”.

It’s cast of electric queer characters evolved into a disarray of minds, bodies, and souls; who triumph through societal challenge.

This summer will also see the release of the iconic deck and reader in a “pocket edition” for easier transportation and shuffling at 2.6” x 3.5”.

Review: F*ck Off Squad

There is something surreal and beautiful about stories which examine just one day. One of the most memorable series is the “Before” film trilogy which star Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. The films start with a chance meeting and find these two people over different times of their lives getting to know and catch up with each other over a course of a day. The first film encompassed the beauty of young love. The second film examines how one becomes more cynical about love and relationships. The third film examines the flaws that the concept of love encompasses and the very institution of marriage in all its complexities.

Not all stories that revolve around one are about love and just like life, it should not be alone. Sometimes a good story can be just about three friends having one great day. In Dave Baker and Nicole Goux’s F*ck Off Squad, we get one such fine day.

We meet Jimmy, Megan, and Clark, three friends who could not be more different but bond over their love of skateboarding and the many challenges of being a teenager. We follow this tri of friends as Megan as she heartbreakingly falls for the lead singer of her band, Teenage Switchblade, begins to dissipate, while Clark tries to get Jimmy to talk about her breakup with her girlfriend, a relationship she hoped was going somewhere. We also find Clark catching feelings for a girl on his high school basketball team, Saanvi, as his attraction to her reaches a fever pitch.  Meanwhile, Jimmy has secretly been seeing her ex-girlfriend, Kate, keeping it a secret from her friends, trying to avoid the judgment from her friends. By book’s end, we find out more about Clark’s home life, Jimmy does what is best for her, and they all realize that relationships suck.

Overall, it’s one of the best slice of life comic books I have read in a very long time. It will make you fall in love with each of the characters and you’ll become engrossed in their beautifully flawed world. The story by Dave Baker is relatable, funny, and heartbreaking. The art by Goux is stimulating and vibrantly drawn. Altogether, this duo proves that sometimes your friends is all the family you need.
