SDCC 2015: Metal Gear Exclusive figure by Gecco

Gecco Corp. has revealed their exclusive figure for this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. At this year’s convention, you’ll be able to pick up the Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes “Jamais Vu”/Raiden 1/6 Scale Statue, White Armor Variant.

In contrast to the familiar clean shiny black armor of MGRR Raiden, this exclusive white version tells the story of his fierce battles, highlighting his damaged armor.

His usual weapons, the blades and scabbards, are changed to the giant rocket launcher on his back and the assault rifle in his right hand. The assault rifle can be displayed with or without the suppressor.

The base features sandbags piled high and a fallen sign, representing a classic stage of the video game.
The eye glows red with a mounted LED in the head. The effect of “Augment Mode” is added on the visor.

“Jamus VU” is the extra mission unlocked only after clearing the main story of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. Raiden got called in to eliminate the mysterious bioroids known as “Snatchers” that had infiltrated the base by killing people and stealing their identities. The White Armor can be gained after completing this mission on normal difficulty.

Preview: Toy News Round-Up

Wow, lots of stuff popped up lately. Had some things going on in life and I got a little behind. Hell of a week for that to happen. So here’s the round-up.

vaderhotwheel

Mattel showed off the first ever Star Wars themed Hot Wheels vehicle. This toy will be at SDCC in July. The roadster is designed to look like Darth Vader and comes packaged inside his own lightsaber. The package features red glowing lights, lightsaber sounds and Vader’s trademark heavy breathing.

NECA reveals the next 18″ Jager from Pacific Rim…….Battle-Damaged Gipsy Danger. Gipsy comes ready for battle with the famous Plasma Cannon that lights up AND swivels. The LED lights in the chest and head from the original version make a return. This behemoth is ready to defend the world this September for about $100.

Bandai has taken the wraps off a great new addition to the S.H. Figuarts series……….Star Wars! The first figures out of the gate in 2015 look to be a Stormtrooper and Dath Vader himself. It’s pretty apparent, from my other posts, just how much I love the S.H Figuarts line, and getting Star Wars figures now makes me extremely happy. I can’t wait for a side-by-side review with the Black Series Stormtrooper and Vader. Based on these early pictures, I’ve got a feeling who the winner will be, do you?

zero

In more S.H. Figuarts news, Bandai gives a first look at the Mega Man Zero star, Zero. Loaded with weapons from the series, Zero comes with; Z-Saber, the laser pistol Buster Shot, and the Triple Rod. Zero also gets a shield accessory and the traditional interchangeable expressions and hands. Zero hits in November for around $50.

magnus

At the Tokyo Toy Show, Takara displayed the first painted version of the latest Masterpiece Transformer, Ultra Magnus. The quality of the figure looks great, as does the scale. He does look a little bulky at the shoulders and legs. More looks are needed at this figure before judgment is passed. But wow, Ultra Magnus!

To close things off, an entry into the WTF?!?! category.

archer

Factory Entertainment announced this piece for SDCC: Archer – Sterling Archer Tuxedo Action Figure. No words, I have no words. This is a variant of the regular Archer figure that will be released and it looks like THIS?!?! Were they going for a retro style here or trying to mimic the look of the show? Either way, they appear to have missed the mark. I was worried about these when they debuted, but they were early, and I assumed they would improve, they have not. This is a big dissapointment to Archer fans who were looking forward to great figures from a great show. Thankfully, there’s only 1500 of these and if you want to toss away $25 they’ll be available at SDCC in July.

I still can’t tell if this is the greatest thing I’ve ever seen, or the greatest thing I will ever see. Hasbro brings Transformers AND hair metal fans a treat with the Transformers 30th Anniversary Tour Edition Action Figure Collection. Available at SDCC (and later at HasbroToyShop.com) the collection features four Transformers re-decoed as the 80’s hair metal/glam rock band, The Knights of Unicron. The whole set is packed in a roadie case and comes with posters, stickers, a concert ticket, a VIP pass, and a tell-all booklet. An album cover (I assume there’s no album, but that would ROCK) for Look What the Bot Dragged In, featuring such hits as Circuit Breaker, Laser Phaser and Rust Without You, is also included. Oh, four amazingly re-painted Transformers are included too. Each one sporting a unique paint scheme and some pretty metal instruments and concert accessories (i.e wigs and tassels).

This is such an amazing set and makes for great SDCC exclusive. The price point is $185, a little steep, but this is truly a unique item. With such a great concept, I can see myself starring at ebay auction screens with my cursor hovering over the BUY NOW button, and agonizing whether or not to click. I’ll probably click.

Preview: NECA News

NECA unveiled their final SDCC ’14 exclusive figure today, and it’s a Predator named Ahab!!!!!!

necapred01necapred02necapred

This guy will be featured in a new Dark Horse comic series, Fire and Stone, debuting in October.

The story description of this new Predator: In his prime, Ahab took deadly trophies from countless worlds, his scars a proud record of glorious battle. Now an elder of his tribe, he leaves small game to the next generation as he looks to his final hunt. Following a lifelong obsession, Ahab searches for a creature more formidable than any Predator has ever faced before.

Hmmmmm, seems oddly familiar? I can’t wait for the Ishmael Predator!

Only 5000 of these will be available worldwide at a price of $30. Ahab features a removable backpack, removable mask and a spear staff weapon.

NECA also showed of the first final production shots of the 12″ (24″ Head-to-Tail) Godzilla figure from the new film. The 6″ (12″ Head-to-Tail) is already in stores and his big brother version ships in July. I’m waiting to see both in the wild first before deciding which one to get. I just feel the larger scale will show off the sculpting better. The paint looks more vibrant on the 12″ figure too. Plus the larger features that famous Godzilla roar. Check the specs below:

necagod necagod01

  • 12″ tall and 24″ from head to tail
  • Features authentic roar sound effect
  • Over 25 points of articulation
  • Bendable tail

I kind of wish the tail was articulated like the smaller version. I’m a little nervous about bendy parts on toys. I always worry about wear and tear when positioning. The price point on the King of the Monsters is expected to be between $50 and $60 when it arrives later this summer.

SDCC Marvel Exclusives or How Poor Am I Going To Be This Summer?

Answer……..very poor indeed.

USA Today showed off Hasbro’s Marvel themed SDCC 2014 exclusives and boy-howdy are they amazing. We are getting a box set each for the Marvel Infinite (formally Marvel Universe) and Marvel Legends lines. Just point your eyeballs at these:

legends-SDCC

That’s a lot of cosmic goodness in one box

Marvel Legends Infinite Series – “The Thanos Imperative”

This box set features Black Bolt, Medusa, Gladiator, Blastaar and Star-Lord. Odd that Blastaar isn’t visible in the box. Perhaps it’s an early mock-up? Or is this the first box set build-a-figure? The box is designed to resemble the Galactus Engine from the “The Thanos Imperative” story line. A new Blackbolt? 6″ Gladiator and Abnett/Lanning Star-Lord? Be still my heart! It took me years to get the old Black Bolt to round out my Illuminati display; now I can upgrade. Star-Lord also brings us closer to a full Guardians roster too. The set has a price point of $99.99.

infinity-SDCC

What an awkward family

Marvel Infinite Series – “The Infinity Gauntlet”

Inspired by the The Infinity Gauntlet storyline, this set features Nebula, Starfox, Death and Thanos. The Death figure is a standout here, with interchangeable human pieces. Thanos looks to be a reissue, but Starfox and Nebula are first-timers. Best of all, the set comes with a real-life foam Infinity Gauntlet, allowing you to recreate killing half the universe right in your home. Thanks Hasbro! The complete set will sell for $74.99.

Between these two sets and the Prison Suit Doomsday from Mattel, this is going to be a very pricey convention season for me. I can’t attend, so I’ll be hunting for the best possible secondary market price on these. By best “best possible” I of course mean a price that will still allow me to eat and pay my mortgage. Fingers crossed! I love that these amazing sets are using both classic and modern cosmic stories to deliver truly unique figures that wouldn’t otherwise see a release. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go check my credit card balance.

Toy Stories – Star Wars Edition – May 5th 2014

With yet another May the fourth behind us, let’s take a look at the Star Wars toy news from this hallowed day.

Wars not make one great

“Wars not make one great”

Hasbro released the first image of the 6″ Star Wars Black Series – Yoda figure. Yoda looks to have a really nice fabric robe that includes a twine belt, Dagobah Yoda is such a hobo. He also comes with a cane, snake, a piece of tech I can’t ID, and (unfortunately) a lightsaber. I was hoping this version of Yoda, clearly from Empire/Jedi would omit the lightsaber. If they wanted a Yoda with his blade, adjust the head sculpt and release a Clone Wars version. I was never a fan of Yoda with a lightsaber. The whole thing seemed out of place for the character that we know from Empire. If you want a more thought out and opinionated view on the subject, check out RedLetterMedia and Mr. Plinkett’s video reviews of the prequel trilogy. Instead of the lightsaber, why not include a training backpack like the 3.75″ figure to attach to Luke? I know we don’t have a Dagobah Luke in the 6″ scale yet, but we will, we will. No release date on this Jedi Master, but presumably before year’s end.

"Yang chas Solo chone Wookiee!"

Entertainment Weekly also showed of Hasbro’s SDCC 2014 Exclusive 6″ Star Wars Black Series – Jabba the Hutt. Like last year’s Boba Fett, SDCC Jabba will come with accessories not include in the retail release. You get a hookah and Salacious Crumb. All this comes packed in a very big box with a folding front panel. The figure does lack the little stage thing that Jabba hangs out, an odd omission for an exclusive figure. Maybe an insert in the box will serve this purpose or maybe the 3rd party community can step-up and supply one. The paint on Jabba looks very nice, but the eyes seems little dark too me. Obviously this guy wont feature a ton of articulation, but his upper “body” looks to have a swivel joint and his arms have some good articulation as well. There will be a retail release, like Boba, but without the extras. Hopefully Jabba will be easier to find at retail than Mr. Fett.
