Table Titans Club is a fun graphic novel for younger readers about finding friends

Valeria Winters has an easier time finding trouble than making friends. A fantasy-obsessed nerd with the legendary confidence–and temper–of a Valkyrie, Val promises her mom that things will be different at her new school. “No more fighting!”

As if by fate, she meets the Table Titans right away–Alan, Andrew, and Darius, who run the school’s tabletop gaming club. Finally, Val has found her own adventuring party! And even better . . . a place where she belongs.

So when the future of the club is threatened, Val makes it her personal quest to save the Table Titans. She’ll have to face the fire-breathing wrestling coach and popular girl Kate, who seems out for revenge. Revenge for what? Val has no clue.

Review: All-New, All-Different Avengers Annual #1

All New All Different Avengers Annual #1 CoverYou’ve dreamed of it, you’ve asked for it, you’ve longed for it – and now, you’re going to GET it! No Avenger is safe from – the fan fiction of Kamala Khan!

All-New, All-Different Avengers Annual #1 is a who’s who of creators and most importantly, a lot of fun. The annual features six entertaining stories from writers G. Willow Wilson, Mark Waid, Natasha Allegri, Zac Gorman, Faith Erin Hicks, Scott Kurtz and art from Mahmud Asrar, Tamra Bonvillain, Chip Zdarsky, Natasha Allegri, Jay Fosgitt, Megan Wilson, Faith Erin Hicks, Scott Kurtz, and Steve Hamaker.

Lets get back to that fun part. Usually, I can’t stand annuals. I find them to be filler and rarely are worth the money or time reading them. This is a hell of an exception with entertaining stories from front to back. The transition in the beginning is a little odd, but once it’s clear how the annual is laid out, things are a hell of a ride that had me smiling and laughing throughout.

The concept is simple with Kamala Khan reading fan fiction about her (and a She-Hulk story) written by others. And with that we can stories and styles that vary and all of them work.

Waid and Zdarsky give us humorous jabs at online MRAs, while Gorman and Fosgitt provide an almost meta crack at Marvel itself (at least Spider-Ham). Each is very different in their look and all are solid. This is the first annual I’m actually suggesting folks get, it’s that much fun.

But, what I really like in this annual is the different styles and inclusion of writers and artists you don’t normally see playing in the Marvel universe. Natasha Allegri’s She-Hulk story has me wanting more in both tone and look while Gorman’s hero/animal mix fully expects me to see an entire spin-off from this universe ala Marvel Zombies. It’s very different, and very well done. So much so that I’d love to see Marvel embrace this for an entire year of annuals.

While I’d love to have seen more of a meta-discussion of online culture and fanfiction, there is some of that, but that’s not really the point. The point is to provide something different and fun and this annual succeeds when it comes to that.

Dylan Meconis Joins PvPOnlinecom Writers’ Room for 15th Anniversary of the Comic!

dylanphotoWebcomic staple PvP began publishing online May 4th, 1998 at a time when the World Wide Web was still dialup and most self-published comics were being printed in zines. Chronicling the tales of a videogame magazine of the same name, PvP and its creator Scott Kurtz became a fixture in the comics and gaming industries over the next decade-and-a-half. For its 15th Anniversary, PvP is again breaking new ground in the comic medium with the creation of the PvP Writers’ Room and the addition of its first new staffer, Dylan Meconis.

“The last fifteen years has been an amazing ride and I’m not interested in stopping anytime soon,” commented series creator Scott Kurtz. “We’ve always tried to stay ahead of the game, remain fluid and never be afraid to experiment. That’s why the creation of the PvP Writers’ Room and bringing in Dylan is the first step of the next decade of PvP.”

“In early January of 2013, as we were in pre-production for our 2nd webcomic Table Titans (TableTitans.com) Scott injured his back. Being laid up and unable to draw for eight hours a day, we reached out for help,” said PvP Director of Business Development and Brand Management Cory Casoni. “I’d met Dylan on several occasions and knew of her love for PvP, so we asked if she’d be willing to fill in for a week. The scripts she delivered were dynamite and one week turned into almost three. That’s when Scott started talking about adding her to the team.”

New writer Dylan Meconis added, “I’m really excited to be working with Scott on PvP. I’ve been an avid reader for years, but when Cory and Scott invited me to fill in, I was surprised by how natural it felt to step into the world of the strip. Being asked to continue as a regular contributor is a delight, not least of all because I might get to talk Scott into drawing things I’ve always wanted to see, like Brent riding a llama. Writing for a beloved daily strip like PvP is a big departure from my previous projects. I’m used to toiling over long stories without the benefit of a collaborator, much less one with the talent and experience of a Scott Kurtz. I can’t wait to see the results.”

“The problem with deadline-based comic strip writing is that sometimes you’re forced to go with your first idea over the best idea.” said Kurtz. “Being a part of a writing team on other projects I learned that with more than one writer, you can get the best idea and maintain the schedule.”

Readers may not realize it but they’ve already been enjoying Meconis’ work. The current PvP storyline, leading up to the New PvP, has all been a product of the combined efforts of Scott Kurtz and Dylan Meconis in the PvP Writers’ Room.

“If you’ve never read PvP now’s the time to start and if you’re a long time fan of the strip get ready for an all new chapter in the series,” concluded Kurtz. “ In just a couple of writing sessions, Dylan and I have laid down the broad strokes for some exciting changes in the PvP comic strip. This is only the beginning of what’s to come. We have big plans, a lot is going to change, and the future of PvP is bright!”

Scott Kurtz + Wizards of the Coast = Table Titans!

Eisner and Harvey award-winning cartoonist Scott Kurtz, the creator of PvPonline.com, is mining his many years spent both in front of and behind a D&D Dungeon Master’s screen to bring us his brand new comic series, Table Titans.

Table Titans follows the real and imagined adventures of three friends, Andrew, Alan, and Valeria, in their struggle to become the world’s most legendary D&D gaming group. Cartoonist Scott Kurtz is teaming up with Dungeons & Dragons publisher Wizards of the Coast to make Table Titans the only comic on the web that features official D&D products built right into the storyline.

The plan is to also to premier the Table Titans Mines of Madness D&D Next adventure at PAX East 2013. The adventure, inspired by the original PVP storyline, is written by Chris Perkins and illustrated by Scott Kurtz. It will be the feature game in the D&D DM’s Challenge taking place on March 23, which Scott himself will oversee.  Just after PAX East, the adventure will be made available as part of the D&D Next playtest materials.

Table Titans will launch on January 28th 2013 at tabletitans.com. The strip will be published free online at TableTitans.com as a series of adventures, each running a set number of months followed by a print and ebook publication.
