Review: Rivers of London: Night Witch #5

RiversOfLondon_2.5_Cover_APress-ganged into helping a Russian oligarch hunt his missing daughter, PC Peter Grant and his boss, Thomas Nightingale, London’s only wizarding cops, find themselves caught up in a battle between Russian gunmen, a monstrous forest creature – and their nemesis: The Faceless Man. But as Grant and Nightingale close in on the missing girl, they discover that nothing about this case is what it seems!

The conclusion to the second story arc of the modern fantasy series Rivers of London is an intriguing tale. While it’s the conclusion of this volume, it does leave a few unanswered questions especially due to the confusing ending panel. Something tells me this isn’t the last story arc for this series by any means. It does conclude the story arc well but leaves one wanting more.

The wave of realistic art continues as the strange case comes to end. There’s a few interesting flashback scenes throughout the comic with most of them using the Russian frontier during WWII as a setting. It helps create a solid contrast between the past and the present.

Review: Rivers of London: Night Witch #2.4

RoL NW Cover ADesperate to find his missing daughter, Russian oligarch Nestor Yakunin has resorted to extreme methods – he has kidnapped innocent civilians to force Peter Grant and Thomas Nightingale – London’s elite wizarding policemen – to help in the search. But you play with magic, you’re going to get burnt…

Rivers of London: Night Witch #2.4 is a complex well-written story, with an ending that leaves you wanting more. The Russians have issued a ransom for a kidnapped child, that is oddly specific. That move only arouses more suspicion by the cops though not the rich family that is giving the ransom. The ending for me is highly surprising since it was beyond unexpected.

Like previous issues, the art is well done. We finally get to see the home of Peter’s Grant lover. The look is a highly modern in design and color scheme that really stands out in the issue.

Review: Rivers of London Vol. 2 Night Witch #1

RoL_Nightwitch_Cover_A - Paul McCaffreyA police vehicle on a routine prison transfer in north London is stormed by Russian hoodlums seeking to free a very particular prisoner. Their target is a witch. A very powerful witch who doesn’t want to be free. Things rapidly turn very ugly for the hoods and it’s soon a job for full-time police constable and part-time wizard, Peter Grant.

Strange things are afoot, as Russian thugs try to break a witch out of an armored car. Not just your run of the mill witch, one who served in a unique Russian unit during WWII. Which isn’t the strangest thing that happens, in Rivers of London: Night Witch #1. I could say more but, that would spoil things.

Compared to the first volume, the art style changes some, as the story itself changes. Unlike the last volume that is more focused on the possessed car this one is more character focused. That seems to bolster the degree of realism, that the world itself has. Even the characters itself seem to be more grounded, in history as they reveal a few backstories.
