Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Pandemica #1

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Absolute Carnage: Symbiote of Vengeance #1 (Marvel) – Absolute Carnage has been top-notch so far and Ghost Rider getting involved has us very intrigued.

Chainsaw Reindeer (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – A reindeer gets pissed off by Santa’s abuse and goes on a murder spree. The concept is out there and gets us to laugh.

Gotham City Monsters #1 (DC Comics) – S.H.A.D.E. is no more and Frankenstein is a free agent once again and he’s got some revenge on his mind.

King Thor #1 (Marvel) – Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic team up again for one last ride with the Lord of Asgard!

Midnight Sky #1 (Scout Comics) – What if you discover the people around you aren’t who you thought they were? Think Invasion of the Body Snatchers meets They Live.

Pandemica #1 (IDW Publishing) – A war is brewing in the US and a shadow government is preparing a “purity bomb” for ethnic cleansing. A group of scientists and SpecOps are going to try to stop them.

Powers of X #4 (Marvel) – The refocusing of Marvel’s X-Men line of comics by Jonathan Hickman has been interesting and with the “death” of so many major characters last issue, this one should be an interesting read to see where he goes next.

Punisher Kill Krew #2 (Marvel) – The Punisher taking on a bunch of fantasy characters works WAY better than it should.

Starcadia Quest #1 (IDW Publishing) – The board game comes to comics!

Trees: Three Fates #1 (Image Comics) – Warren Ellis and Jason Howard’s Trees returns with a murder mystery in a remote Russian village.

Review: Punisher Kill Krew #1

Punisher Kill Krew #1

During the War of the Realms, Frank Castle made a promise of vengeance, and Frank Castle keeps his promises. Punisher Kill Krew #1 kicks off a direct follow up to the War of the Realms.

Written by Gerry Duggan, Punisher Kill Krew #1 is a smart start to a miniseries delivering just enough information for new readers to enjoy it. It also has a “quest” aspect of it that blends the Punisher’s aesthetic with a Dungeons & Dragons like adventure. That includes mission creep and an off the rails aspect to it all.

When I head about the comic, I admit I had a bad flashback to the Punisher’s avenging angel days. The character and “fantasy” didn’t quite click for me. Duggan does some smart things to make the genres work. There’s a focus on revenge, a regular motif for the Punisher. He’s out to kill someone who hurt another person. It just so happens the being is a troll. Then there’s the addition of orphaned kids. This adds some heart to the story. We see Frank’s reaction to them and his need to help. It humanizes him a bit and shifts the story from a straight murder spree.

The art by Juan Ferreyra, with lettering by Cory Petit, also helps. There’s a blend of the mystical and cold guns that just works. It’s not odd to see the Punisher don a Viking like helmet and use a machine gun. It doesn’t look weird when he tosses a grenade into a killer tree. It all flows in a way that has some humor about it and keeps aspects of the grounded Punisher and fantasy world. The art also creates an off-the-rails campaign aspect to it, mainly due to some humorous moments.

Punisher Kill Krew #1 works in a way because it both does and doesn’t take itself too seriously. There’s something fun about it all as it mixes bullets and swords. What shouldn’t work not only does but has me excited to see what comes next.
