Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays (and now Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Batman: The Detective #1 (DC Comics) – Tom Taylor, Andy Kubert, and Brad Anderson take Batman on a European adventure!

Canto & the City of Giants #1 (IDW Publishing) – A bridge between the second and third volumes of the beloved series.

Children of the Atom #2 (Marvel) – The first issue left us scratching our heads and we’re excited to discover the secret about this team.

Doctor Who: Missy #1 (Titan Comics) – The Doctor Who villain gets the spotlight!

Guardians of the Galaxy #13 (Marvel) – It’s a new team and new direction for Marvel’s cosmic side of its universe.

Home #1 (Image Comics) – A story about immigration and asylum mixed with superhero abilities. The series explores the real-world implications of migration.

Jenny Zero #1 (Dark Horse) – The military’s top kaiju killer, “Jenny Zero” now lives the celebutante life. When the massive creatures return, Jenny must decide if she can sober up and save the world!

The Joker #2 (DC Comics) – The first issue was fantastic with its focus on Jim Gordon and his being recruited to hunt the Joker. Now, Gordon must decide what he wants to do and how to do it. There’s also a hell of a reveal in it that will have an impact of Batman stories of the past!

Jules Verne’s Lighthouse #1 (Image Comics) – Based on the story by Jules Verne, he who controls the Lighthouse controls part of the galaxy.

Locke & Key/Sandman: Hell & Gone #1 (IDW Publishing) – The two properties come together for what is sure to be an entertaining tale.

Maniac of New York #3 (AfterShock) – The first two issues were fantastic. The series asks what if Jason was real in New York City?

MPLS Sound (Humanoids) – MPLS Sound is the ultimate love letter to the legendary Minneapolis funk-rock sound of the 1980s.

Non-Stop Spider-Man #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was full of action and excitement and we’re excited to see if it can keep it up.

Phantom on the Scan #1 (AfterShock) – A comment gives Matthew incredible psychic powers but those who gained similar powers are all dying in horrible ways.

Proctor Valley Road #2 (BOOM! Studios) – The first issue was full of mystery and has us returning to see what happens when the group of girls is blamed for the disappearance of their friends.

Scout’s Honor #4 (AfterShock) – A great series that’s been building its world while telling an engaging and exciting story. No idea where it’s all going but we want to find out!

Spider-Man: Spider’s Shadow #1 (Marvel) – What if Peter Parker became Venom? By Chip Zdarsky, Pasqual Ferry, and Matt Hollingsworth? Yeah, we’re in.

The Tankies (Dead Reckoning) – Garth Ennis’ latest collection of war comics!

Undone By Blood or the Other Side of Eden #2 (AfterShock) – It’s a crime comic set during the Depression. Yeah, we’re in for this one.

White Lily #2 (Red 5 Comics) – Based on the real Russian pilot during World War II. She was one of the best of the time!

Studios has revealed a first look at Proctor Valley Road #2, the next issue of the star-studded new horror limited series from Grant Morrison, Alex Child, Naomi Franquiz, and Tamra Bonvillain about the mysterious monsters that haunt Proctor Valley Road – and the four misfit teenagers who must stop them. Proctor Valley Road #2, developed in partnership with UCP Graphic, is available on April 14, 2021.

Review: Proctor Valley Road #1

There’s been a rise in the group ghost hunting genre. You see it on television with a smattering of shows that feel like they multiply each month and blend together. In comics, there’s been a rise as well with numerous series all giving their spin. They too tend to blend together though each has its own special something. Proctor Valley Road #1 kicks off the latest entry into the genre with a solid start that’s really good but at the same time blends in with the bunch.

Written by Grant Morrison and Alex Child Proctor Valley Road #1 takes us to the 1970s. The Vietnam War rages on and a group of girls want to see Janis Joplin in concert. To do so, they need to raise money and after various schemes don’t work out, they turn to a ghost tour that goes horribly wrong.

There’s a cinematic quality about the comic which makes sense as it’s already being adapted to television. What starts with a slight Goonies vibe turns into a series that’s more of a Stand By Me meets Fire in the Sky with a little IT sense about it.

It’s a good start with each character showing off unique and memorable personalities that make you like them all. Morrison and Child plant the story squarely in the time period with uncomfortable discussions over the war and language, though accurate, will (hopefully) make readers wince. Despite the fantastical nature of the story, this detail helps ground it in some ways. There’s also an interesting use of the war as to what happens in the comic. Again, it’s a detail that adds depth and realism to the story and series.

Naomi Franquiz handles the art delivering a lot of that personality helping to bring the characters alive. Along with colors by Tamra Bonvillain and lettering by Jim Campbell, the visuals of the comic are smart teasing the horror and building the tension. There’s something really well done with how the story is crafted visually. There’s a good use of visually building tension, whether it’s the confrontation at the fair or the events at the end. All of it never goes over the top either. The “scares” and unease are just enough to get you to come back and want to see more. The comic could have easily gone the gore route but it uses a smart build like that of IT or The Blair Witch Project to keep readers on edge as to what might happen.

Proctor Valley Road #1 is a well done comic. It unfortunately has a lot of similar comics out right now and they’re all well done. It’ll be interesting to see how this one differentiates itself from the pack. The use of the Vietnam War is one way that’s happening grounding the story and infusing real world events to make readers question what might have happened.

Batman: Urban Legends #1 (DC Comics) – An anthology featuring top talent taking on the world of Batman? Yeah, we’re in for this one.

Blade Runner Origins #1 (Titan Comics) – Discover the origin of the Blade Runners in this brand-new series!

Blue, Barry, & Pancakes (First Second) – A cute graphic novel geared towards young readers with lessons about friendship and listening.

Children of the Atom #1 (Marvel) – This series has been a long-time coming. The covers and art has hinted at a group that has a lot of inspiration from classic X-Men characters but what’s their deal? It’s not what we expected and a solid mystery.

Eternals #3 (Marvel) – The characters are coming to the big screen and this series is clearly an attempt to re-introduce them to the Marvel comic universe. So far, it’s been an interesting start though a little scattered in focus. The art has stood out as amazing though.

The Joker #1 (DC Comics) – We’ll admit, we were a bit skeptical about this one when announced but the first issue is a solid setup that has us excited for more.

Karmen #1 (Image Comics) – Guillem March’s series comes to Image as five single issues.

Maiden #1 (Heavy Metal) – A tale of revenge from Heavy Metal featuring Michelle Sears and Bart Sears!

Maniac of New York #2 (AfterShock) – The first issue knocked it out of the park. A film-like serial killer exists and terrorizes New York City. This is the story of the two cops looking to bring it down.

Mighty Morphin #5 (BOOM! Studios) – The origin of the new Green Ranger!

Minerva’s Map Key to a Perfect Apocalypse #1 (Lev Gleason – New Friday) – Don’t know much about this beyond the description. Minerva has been hired to locate two ancient, otherworldly items. Kind of has an Indiana Jones vibe about it.

Non-Stop Spider-Man #1 (Marvel) – A new Spider-Man comic? Sure, we’re interested in seeing what makes it different.

Nottingham #1 (Mad Cave Studios) – A new take on the classic story of Robin Hood. Read our review.

Proctor Valley Road #1 (BOOM! Studios) – During a “Spook Tour”, students goes missing and a rescue for them begins.

Scout’s Honor #3 (AfterShock) – The series so far has been an interesting spin on an apocalyptic world with some solid underlying themes. We want to see where it all goes.

Serial #2 (Abstract Studios) – Zoe is on the hunt for a serial killer hiding in plain sight in her community. The first issue threw out a lot of concepts, this second issue begins to bring them together.

Sh*tshow #2 (Scout Comics) – A big bad destroyed almost all of the world’s superheroes and now it’s back to snuff out the rest. Can those traumatized about the first battle stand against this world threat?

Space Bastards #3 (Humanoids) – The series is full of over-the-top violence and humor and each issue has left a smile on our face.

Specter Inspectors #2 (BOOM! Studios) – We expected the first issue to be a spoof of ghosthunting shows but the debut delivered something different and very entertaining.

Thor and Loki: Double Trouble #1 (Marvel) – Mariko Tamaki and Gurihiru are back together for another fun adventure!

Studios has announced Proctor Valley Road #1, kicking off a star-studded new horror limited series from visionary writer Grant Morrison, Alex Child, Naomi Franquiz, and Tamra Bonvillain (Once & Future) about the mysterious monsters that haunt Proctor Valley Road – and the four misfit teenagers who must stop them. Proctor Valley Road, developed in partnership with NBCUniversal, debuts in comic shops on Wednesday, March 3, 2021. NBCUniversal’s UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, will also adapt the series for television and will shop the adaptation to networks and streaming platforms.

Universal Content Productions Launches UCP Graphic

UCP Graphic is a new initiative from Universal Content Productions focused on publishing graphic novels from “up-and-coming talent.”

The first release will be Proctor Valley Road from Alex Child and Grant Morrison who is co-writing the first five issues. BOOM! Studios is publishing the series.

Proctor Valley Road is about a group of teenage girls suspected in the disappearance of several teenage boys in a 1964 California beach town.

The comic imprint is all about intellectual property and using platforms to develop it across media. Comics could be turned into film, television, or podcasts.

UCP is behind the Netflix adaptation of The Umbrella Academy which is published by Dark Horse and producing Resident Alien for SyFy, another Dark Horse series.
