Review: Powers In Action #1

Powers in Action #1

A bold new adventure awaits! Our heroes, LYNX and his sister, OCELOT, join the super team known as The HERO SQUADRON…and they are late for their first meeting. Maybe these delays are because of SUPER VILLAINS! Oh no! Looks like our heroes may have work to do before they even join the team. Will these cat-heroes fit in with the members of the HERO SQUADRON?  Join us for this new SUPER HERO DIMENSION of the AW YEAH UNIVERSE told by famous cartoonist Art Baltazar.

I’ll be completely honest with you; I agreed to review Powers in Action #1 based solely on the title, having NO idea what the concept of the comic was (I didn’t even read the above text until I pasted it here after opening the comic). In short, I really went into the comic utterly blind.

It was so much fun.

Powers In Action #1 is VERY kid friendly, which is to be expected and applauded given the rating, and reads very much like a Saturday morning cartoon. Although this is a very simple story, there’s a lot of subtly to the messaging – especially at the beginning – such as when Lynx, a male superhero gets swiftly taken out by the villain leaving his sister, Ocelot, to capture the bad guy. It’s a great little touch that we all need to be reminded of; girls (or women) don’t need boys (or men) to take care of things for them.

Make no mistake about it, this is very much a comic that your kids will enjoy (or your inner child if your an adult), and perhaps is one that you should add to your pull list for the young friends in your life. But should you read it yourself if you don’t want to buy comics for kids (or have no kids to buy comics for)?

Yup. This is a genuinely fun, light comic that’s well worth adding to your collection when you want to feed your inner child.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Age of X-Man: Alpha

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

It’s a short week of releases with the holiday and you can get every single issue for under $50! So, instead of picking which you should get, we’re doing something a little bit different with going over what they are and why you should check out each release!

Age of X-Man: Alpha #1 (Marvel) – This is the real lead up to the new various miniseries that’ll make up the Age of X-Man. It’s also our first look at this world where everyone is a mutant.

Fight Club 3 #1 (Dark Horse) – Chuck Palahniuk is back with his popular series. We’ve read the first issue and we’re scratching our head honestly but the art by Cameron Stewart is amazing.

Heroes in Crisis #5 (DC Comics) – Yes, the series is beyond controversial but we’d be lying if we said we weren’t excited to see where it’s going and what’s next.

James Brown: Black and Proud (IDW Publishing) – A graphic novel biography of the talented musician. A great way to learn about his life.

Peter Cannon Thunderbolt #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) -Kieron Gillen takes on the character and that alone has us excited. In Kieron we trust.

Powers in Action #1 (Action Lab Entertainment) – Art Baltazar brings a whole new world in this all-ages superhero series.

Star Trek: Q Conflict #1 (IDW Publishing) – Anything with Q in Star Trek and we’re in.

WWE Forever #1 (BOOM! Studios) – Classic WWE and we’re all in for it.

Wyrd #1 (Dark Horse) – This sounds like a spin on the X-Files from Curt Pires and Antonio Fuso and we’re totally in for that combo.

X-Force #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was fantastic and we’re expecting no less from this second one. X-Force is back and awesome!

Art Baltazar’s Powers in Action #1 Introduces The Hero Squadron!

The year was 1986… when Art Baltazar created his first Super Heroes. Before Tiny Titans. Before Itty Bitty Hellboy. Before Aw Yeah Comics shops. Before the indie hit sensation Patrick The Wolf Boy. Even before Artie’s first self-published work The Cray Baby Adventures. There was Powers in Action!

Based on the super hero comics of famous cartoonist Art Baltazar, created in 1986 when he was 17 and in high school, originally called Images of Art, these classic tales and characters are getting a redesign and story retellings. Updated by Art Baltazar with over 25 years of cartooning experience for a brand-new never before seen audience! WHEW!

Join us on this bold adventure as LYNX brings his sister, OCELOT to join the super team in their first meeting. Let’s hope there are no delays along the way in the form of SUPER VILLAINS! Oh no! Looks like our heroes may have work to do before they even join the team. But where there are heroes, the villains are not very far. Who is the mysterious DARKSTORM? What’s up with the destructive BOT? And who is that alien trio? And why do they have the same powers as SUPLEX? It begins here!
